Judy Shepard: Obama Is ‘Teachable’

“Obama has been very inclusive of the gay community. … We haven’t gotten him on gay marriage yet, but he’s teachable, definitely teachable.” —Matthew Shepard’s mother Judy, speaking at Indiana University Northwest yesterday [NW Indiana Post-Tribune]

We haven’t gotten him on Gay Marriage.

How exactly is he INCLUSIVE? Bitch wouldn’t even be seen with Gavin Newsome when he was in SF, for fear of taint of us. You think because some power gays got tea in the white house with one of his aide’s aid we are included?

@Oaklander: His platform is with us on um, all except marriage. Now, actions do speak louder than words, and DADT has been disappointing so far, but where’s the evidence that he opposes workplace protection, adoption, etc? Also, he released a statement on the hate crimes bill. That’s just flat wrong; even David reported that one.

@Alec: You said it yourself… It’s not what you say, it is what you do.

@Oaklander: And he spoke out in support of the hate crimes bill, the only sexual orientation and gender identity specific legislation moving through congress at the moment. There’s an entirely different branch of government that isn’t being criticized for not pushing forward legislation.

I believe that he is with us on all items including Marriage. I also believe that as the president of the entire united/divided states that he is smart about what he says, when he says it and who he is publicly seen with. This doesn’t mean that he is not working and allowing work to be done quietly in the background in our favor.

This is the smarter approach for all of us. If he were on the other hand as some of you wish come out and give Gavin Newsome a big kiss and publicly say he wants XYZ and all right now he would only be giving more ammo to the conservative right which is having a having a hard time getting more moderately conservative people to oppose him.

@alex: “God is in the mix” and “I believe marriage is between a man and a woman” to thunderous applause does not translate into support. The No on 8 campaign did a crappy job exploiting his opposition to Proposition 8, but I received an anti-marriage robocall on the eve of the CA elections, and I’m not interested in President Obama’s excuses at this point, nor will I pretend he is “secretly” with us.
