Matthew Santos, the frank and fearless co-host of MTV Canadaâs critically acclaimed 1 Girl 5 Gays, has passed away according to MTV. He was 27.
Matthew, better known as âSantosâ to fans of the show, was noted for being one of the more comical cast members during the showâs history, always pandering for a genuine laugh and coining a few glamorous catchphrases along the way.
1G5G writes on Facebook:
It is with profound sadness that we share in the sudden passing of Matthew Santos. As a colleague and friend to MTV, Matthew was a generous, kind, and spirited individual of whom we will always hold wonderful memories. As part of the cast of 1 girl 5 gays, Matthew embodied a bold originality and fearless individuality so rarely seen, but so greatly appreciated. Through his honesty and candour, he bravely demonstrated the importance of living life on your own terms. Matthew shunned the ordinary, and because of that, became extraordinary. How very lucky we all are to have known him. Our deepest condolences go out to his family, friends and boyfriend Taurel.
How about we take this to the next level?

What a sad surprise.

Ouch, that’s sad. I remember him from the show and he was a funny guy. RIP

RIP Santos
Thanks for the laugh

Where is the MTV article?

Sorry to read this – RIP!
oilburner
My friend Monica who’s kinda psychic said he most likely died of complications due to a long battle with
HIV
or a crystal meth. Overdose since he did come across as the PNP type. Mark my word it was AIDS & TWEAKING
SteveDenver
@oilburner: Reveling in the sordid details of someone’s death is really important to you, isn’t it? Splashing around in the tragedy of others makes you feel superior in some twisted way. You’re a piece of garbage “oilburner.”
Dev
How exactly did he celebrate his 28th birthday last week and he was born on July 3….
stadacona
You can bet it was drug related. People (gay or straight – doesn’t matter)who seek the limelight are generally stupid and think they’re special.
JasonBrownUK
^ And the speculations from the no-nothings begins
Dev
@stadacona: You seem fun.
Respect4all
@Dev: @stadacona: Yeah. And a genius too.
SteveDenver
@stadacona: YOU “are generally stupid and think youâre special.”
Kangol
Very sad, and so young. RIP.
xzall
Very sad. When someone this young dies of course people are going to speculate although some of the tone here is unnecessarily nasty. Some of the people on social media who claim to be friends of Santos or who say they attended his service are saying the family says he died from pneumonia.
Sebizzar
Didn’t know him but man it’s always heartbreaking when someone dies so young đ Rest in peace.
parker528
@oilburner: This is quite offensive. An ex boyfriend of mine, several years after we had broken up ended up turning to meth after an HIV diagnosis. At some point within 2 years of telling me about this struggle, he was injecting it. The last time he injected it, he knew right away he took too much and called 911. The attending ER physicians explained to his assembled family and friends that one cannot actually die from a meth overdose; but sadly as a result of his body unable to overcome the overdose, he went into a coma within 6 hours, and died 3 days later of a heart attack. The injection did not kill him, it was that normal methods for treating OD’s for other illegal drugs did not work in combating meth OD. His overdose, the er docs again told us, was not going to cause his death and his death certificate does NOT even indicate the heart attack being brought on BY such an overdose. It only states death by heart failure…..I’d check your facts before posting something that if this starts friends and family members read, could be very hurt. You are borderline slanderous and very out of line.
tookietookie
@xzall: “pneumonia?” *rolls eyes”
iMort
From the video he seems to have been fun and adorable. This story is very sad. May you find glamour in heaven…
Kane9
@tookietookie: um, he very well could have. Generally Pneumonia is the result of a preexisting illness i.e. HIV, of which im sure a lot of us know.
just_pedro
@parker528
Well said. Very tragic about your loss of your
Ex partner Steve. Thank you for sharing those honest details.
the other Greg
Lots of pearl-clutching here! Get a grip. He was a public figure. It’s the same on Queerty whenever a porn “star” dies of HIV-related causes: a certain pearl-clutching contingent comes on here to declare this the Funeral Home Guestbook where only nicey-nicey comments will be tolerated.
Sadly, when a 27 year old man – especially when he’s gay – dies suddenly nowadays, it’s hardly unreasonable to wonder if it was drug-related. You don’t need an imaginary “kinda psychic” friend like oilburner’s to worry about that.
The secrecy about the (utterly-unstated) cause of death only supports the speculation. If he had been building an igloo like Jim Henson’s son, they would have just said so.
@parker528: Unfortunately, your story about your ex, sad as it is, confirms the theory more than anything anyone else here says. (You seem not to have noticed this.) You say yourself that your ex’s death certificate “only states death by heart failure.” But you explain in detail that it was really meth-related. So if someone said you were being “borderline slanderous” by dissing your ex in this way, they would be incorrect because it’s true and if something is true it’s not slander.
Kane9
was it well known that Santos was a meth addict? I must of been out of the loop because this is the first im hearing of it.
the other Greg
@Kane9: Well that is the oddest question yet! Was there some reason why you should have been in the loop? Addictive drug use is not something that celebrities usually tell fans about on their fan pages.
Take for instance Philip Seymour Hoffman, even some (if not all) of his closest friends were unaware of his heroin problem.
Mdterp01
Wow. Santos was always a bit too eccentric for my taste, but I still appreciated his presence on 1g5g. It must have been expected whatever it was because Ish (who was also on that same cast) said on his twitter being appreciative of his partner for allowing him to say goodbye. Sad no matter how you look at it. That is way too young to die.
Jersey2013
I noticed a few times on the show the panel alluding to Santos having had a difficult life, I suspect it had to do with existing health problems but they never elaborated. He also always seemed a little “frail” for lack of a better word. I doubt highly his death was the result of AIDS, sorry haters but no-one in industrialized countries (especially ones with universal, free health care) dies of AIDS at 27 any more.
Niall
Sad, but I really hope it’s something “natural”
mmedesevigne
@oilburner: Your ‘friend Monica who’s kinda psychic’?? Are you kidding me with this??
Kane9
@the other Greg: you sound like an idiot. Winehouse, Hendrix, Cobain, Houston, Jackson, all celebs and known addicts. you make it seem like knowing someone is an addict is a rare occurrence. DOLT!
tookietookie
@Jersey2013: very irresponsible of you, yes they do. They don’t die of pneumonia.
Stache1
@Kane9: You’re referring to rock stars where drug abuse is practically the norm. His point of PSH and also that dude from Glee make the other Greg’s point spot on. No one knew a thing so it doesn’t mean sh** that you never heard of it before. I’d say it’s you that sounds like an idiot.
the other Greg
@Stache1: Thanks!
They really should try harder to keep Kane9 “in the loop” on this stuff.
the other Greg
@Kane9: At any rate, even your rock star list is questionable.
Cobain killed himself with a gun so if you think his death was somehow drug-related that’s really a stre-e-e-e-etch.
Jackson was a secretive guy and his drug use was very, um… esoteric. Few of us had even heard of the stuff he was on.
I don’t think Whitney Houston’s drug use was very well-known within her circle, either (I may be wrong about that). Anyway the public wasn’t aware of it.
Hendrix is the only one who’s a gray area IMO (he actually predicted his death).
Winehouse was a worldwide punchline for a few years before her OD. Everyone was “in the loop”: happy?
discodan92
@oilburner you are not garbage, i think what you had to say is very accurate. Meth is so dangerous and I can say this from personal experience. Even after smoking it once the desire to do it again especially in the confines of sex is very great. But when you inject it, the desire to never go back lessenes even more as the feeling of it is incredible but comes at a cost. I am so sorry to hear about Santos’ loss but if it is Meth this is an opportunity to address this scary epidemic. And serves as a warning to those out there.
hotshot70
regardless how he passed on, the comments should stay upbeat. Shame on those who want to point and say “AIDS” or “DRUGS”. Whatever the cause, it is sad. Leave it at that.
BillZaumen
Sorry, but if it is “hateful” to acknowledge that unprotected sex without commitment and drug use have killed so many of us, than the “haters” have a point.
We will have a better future when we stick around and show up for it.
Caleb in SC
@BillZaumen: There is a difference between posting something that is a valid critique of a situation and comments that are lurid, prurient and tacky. Stop the speculation about the cause of his death until more comes to light.
Mdterp01
What the hell people? The guy was 27 years old. I think its only natural to speculate on cause of death for someone that young. I agree that no one should be throwing out AIDS or drug speculations without knowing anything. But yes, while it is sad because no one should be taken so young, I also am curious as to what took his life so young. I just won’t speculate on the actual cause of death until I hear it from a credible source; if its ever revealed.
misterhollywood
It is legitimate to ask questions about his death. There is nothing wrong with this. When information is missing about someone because of a vacuum of information, people tend to fill in the gaps. Nothing wrong with this discussion.
Brian
@the other Greg: You really think the public didn’t know about Whitney Houston’s drug use? You don’t remember “crack is wack” or the Enquirer pictures of her bathroom filled with drug paraphernalia or the Debra Wilson Mad TV impersonation or the numerous Kathy Griffin jokes about it? We knew, her family knew, everybody knew.
And while Kurt Cobain may have shot himself, it’s not a stretch of the imagination to believe that his drug problems were the major contributing factor that led him to that point.
Brian
@hotshot70: The comments about somebody’s death should stay upbeat?
the other Greg
@Brian: I’m glad you were in the loop re: Whitney!
OK, she was ridiculed for crack use. I agree that crack’s a nasty drug, yeah yeah yeah, I’ve done it, it’s nasty, but it’s hardly an automatic death sentence. She didn’t die from crack, she died of OTHER drugs which the public didn’t know about beforehand (did they?).
As for Kurt Cobain, it’s well-established that he had ongoing, agonizing stomach pain and his occasional heroin use had nothing to do with his suicide. Lots of depressed people who don’t drink or do drugs at all commit suicide.
What exactly is your point? Is is better if fans know that a celebrity is inevitably destined for drug-induced death, or is it better if we NOT know? I still don’t get what your and Kane9’s point is.
Brian
What exactly is your point? That unless the public knew about every drug Whitney Houston took, they somehow didn’t know she had a serious drug problem? All anybody had to do was listen to her singing voice and watch her strange behavior during the last decade of her life to know that something serious was going on. It wasn’t that hard to connect the dots. And BTW, Whitney didn’t die from OTHER drugs, she died from drowning in the bathtub. With cocaine in her bloodstream. You do know what crack is made out of? If you were stupid enough to smoke it, hopefully you at least knew what you were putting into your body.
And as for Kurt Cobain, it’s also well established that he used heroin as a way to ease his stomach pain. And it wasn’t “occasional” use, it was a full fledged addiction that included an overdose less than a year before he died, as well as rehab.
I don’t know what your point is, but my point is that just because there’s a specific cause of death that may not be from drugs, doesn’t mean that drug use didn’t contribute to, if not be the major cause of the events that led to somebody’s death.
And I guess my new point is, if somebody goes to rehab, like Phillip Seymour Hoffman, Kurt Cobain, and Whitney Houston all did, it’s safe to say that their friends and family are aware of their substance abuse problem. Why you seem to think these people weren’t in the loop when this was all information that was released to the general public, is beyond me.
the other Greg
@Brian: um… okay.
So we’ve gone from most everyone here being offended at the very suggestion that Matthew Santos MAY have died from meth, to assuming that he probably did.
Evji108
One thing is for sure, he was fairly young, and he died of something. All they said was that his death was sudden. In the absence of real information, people will (naturally) speculate. Hiding the cause of death only creates rumor and innuendo. Just come out with it already.
oilburner
@xzall: mmmmmmmHHHHmmm
oilburner
@tookietookie: I rolled my eyes and laughed when I read that too
oilburner
@the other Greg: her name is Monica you moron and all my comments were hilarious and if you were bothered by them than good. Because while you whine and snivel about them I continue to laugh
oilburner
@discodan92: thank u
the other Greg
@oilburner: You did notice I was agreeing with you, generally speaking?
I bet your friend Monica the psycho, I mean psychic, guessed correctly this time. đ

Wow…most of y’all on this blog aint about shit. It’s bad enough that every comment section on this blog is full of nasty comments. But to makeup fowl assumptions about someones death is just very very low.
Nickolas
wow hey was 27 when he died he was so young to die, thanks for the laguhs,
-RIP

He passed away in February of 2014. This is an old story, or Queerty is just very late reporting it!!!!

Reading my comments from two years ago still makes me laugh. God this shit us funny.
