We’ve all seen the haters gathered outside pride festivals with their ridiculous signs telling us we’re going straight to hell. Some folks ignore them, while others — usually those with a bit of liquid fortitude thanks to a pre-Pride brunch of bottomless mimosas — try to goad them into confrontation. We like the way a guy handled the situation at the Pride event in Chester, England over the weekend. In a video posted to Vimeo with the title “How we deal with bigots in Chester,” the man identified by Attitude as Dean Paton from Chester-based “heritage and education” company Big Heritage walks across the parade route and squeezes in next to the homophobes and unveils an enormous sign of his own that uses scientific facts to shut up the haters.

Homophobic attitudes are more likely to found in individuals who harbour unacknowledged attraction towards the same sex, a series of psychology studies have found.
The study, which analysed four separate experiments conducted in the US and Germany, provides empirical evidence to suggest that homophobia is in fact the â??external manifestation of repressed sexual desires they feel towards their own genderâ??.
â??Individuals who identify as straight but in psychological tests show a strong attraction to the same sex may be threatened by gays and lesbians because homosexuals remind them of similar, unrealised desires they themselves harbour,â? Netta Weinstein, a lecturer at the University of Essex and the studyâ??s lead author, explained.
The sexual orientation of participants was measured by how they reacted to words and images with sexual connotations, during a timed task.

The study â?? which was conducted by a team from the University of Rochester, the University of Essex and the University of California â?? also found that subjects who said they were heterosexual â?? but reported homosexual tendencies during tasks â?? were more likely to be hostile to gays, who were forced to repress their true emotions because of strict, conservative upbringings.
The researchers also said that this may why some homophobic public figures have often caught engaging in homosexual acts.
They highlighted the case of Ted Haggard, the evangelical preacher who opposed gay marriage but was exposed in a gay sex scandal in 2006 and Glenn Murphy, Jr., the former chairman of the Young Republican National Federation and vocal opponent of gay marriage, who was accused of sexually assaulting a 22-year-old man in 2007

@Merv: Well in fairness to Christians, there are Christians out there who are not complete arsewads like the far right fundamentalist homophobes who troll the internet and show up on street corners holding signs preaching cherry picked hatred. Coming from a non-Christian background I have had to deal with these types pretty much my entire life. But I have also met quite a few decent and compassionate Christians who do not go around doing this sort of nonsense.

The funny thing is, they fit the most basic stereotypes.
If you ever look at interviews with the Westboro Baptist church, all the men are timid and shrinking, and the women are very in your face and ballsy.
They literally fit into the (Shy gay/ In your face lesbian) stereotypes that those same organization are attacking.

Brilliant, brilliant, brilliant. At the Los Angeles Pride parade, the homophobes hang out at the corner of La Cienega and Santa Monica Blvds for the. There’s a billboard at that corner which I think the community should rent for the month of June for that message.

Some are Muslim, some are Jewish. remember the man in Israel who stabbed people at the Pride event in Jerusalem after being let out of prison (where he had been imprisoned for stabbing a gay person). Most homophobes are neurotically religious, but they can come from any religion.
