7 days left to a Lost Cause (the mis-election of John 'W' McCain)
BTW – Adam Nagourney is the best journalist at the NYTimes and worth reading for accuracy and high journalistic standards
That's a fair analysis. John McCain is losing the election as we speak. This is going to be a huge absentee year. In some states, the early turnout is already more than double the usual. And we still have a week to go. That might translate into 30-40% of the overall vote.
By most accounts, the early voting seems very ominous for the GOP on all fronts. Aside from the ever shrinking presidential electoral college map, they have to deal with:
A likely Democratic gain of 20-30 seats in House. Since 2006, the Republicans have already lost 33 seats in the midterms and subsequent by-elections. If they post similar losses this time around, that's a net of 53-63 seats gone in two years (which means they will have surrendered more ground than the Democrats did in the 1994 disaster).
The Democrats are poised to come very close to a filibuster-proof 60 seats in the Senate as well. They're already closing the deal on 56 seats – VA, NM, CO, NH, AK – for a gain of at least five. Dole, Smith, and Coleman are all trailing as well (albeit by less than 5 points). If that holds up and they can upset just one more Republican incumbent, they've got it.
