None of us needs to be reminded of just how homophobic the U.S. Catholic bishops are. But the bishops clearly feel a refresher is in order for Pope Francis. In what is close to becoming an open revolt, the U.S. bishops are letting the pope know in no uncertain terms that they believe homophobia = Catholicism and that they are more Catholic than the pope.
And the pope is letting them know who’s the boss.
The bishops are gathering in Baltimore for their annual jamboree, and while their ostensible agenda is, in the words of one journalist, “sleep inducing,” the actual agenda is the battle brewing between the bishops and Pope Francis. Following the Vatican synod last month, many of the bishops are fuming that the pope is abandoning the hardcore homophobia that has been their bread and butter.
“Many of the U.S. bishops have been disoriented by what this new pope is saying and I don’t see them really as embracing the pope’s agenda,” said John Thavis, a former Rome bureau chief for Catholic News Service, told the Associated Press.
How about we take this to the next level?
Our newsletter is like a refreshing cocktail (or mocktail) of LGBTQ+ entertainment and pop culture, served up with a side of eye-candy.
And they’re not trying to hide their displeasure. Bishop Thomas Tobin of Providence, RI, said that the synod was “rather Protestant.” Archbishop Charles Chaput of Philadelphia, who won his position through homophobia, said that the synod created confusion about Church teaching and “I think confusion is of the devil.”
No one has been more hard core than Cardinal Raymond Burke, formerly the flame-throwing archbishop of St. Louis, whom Pope Benedict appointed the equivalent of chief justice of the Vatican court system. Burke has gone to far as to say that the Church is risking a schism by moving “contrary to the constant teaching and practice of the Church.” What he’s really talking about is softening the Church’s stance on LGBT issues, even if actual policies don’t change.
Pope Francis sent the bishops a strong signal about where he stands by formally demoting Burke just two days before the bishops met. The pope busted Burke to the ceremonial position of protectorate of the Knights of Malta. The move was a brutal reminder of just who holds the power in the Church.
Some of the bishops have been trying to paper over the differences by madly spinning the press.
“What I heard and read, the real synod was divisive, confrontational, partisan, and dwelt only on same sex-marriage, cohabitation and divorce,” New York’s Timothy Dolan said Monday. “In fact it was plodding, even at times tedious, but it was a synod of consensus.”
Dolan is going to have to revisit that statement in the confessional, because it’s clearly untrue. The document that the synod originally floated was much more pro-gay. It was watered down because the conservative bishops, many of them from the U.S., blew a gasket. That’s not the definition of consensus.
The fact is, the landscape for the U.S. bishops has changed, and they don’t know how to deal with it.
“It used to be your career in the church could be advanced if you took a hard stance on issues,” the Rev. James Bretzke, a professor of moral theology at Boston College, told the Boston Herald. “Pope Francis wants people who are more bridge builders instead of bridge burners.”
That won’t stop the hard-core homophobes from taking a few more bridges with them before they go. They’re probably hoping that the pope is standing on one of them.

The title of the article is misleading. They don’t think he is too soft on homophobia. They think he is not supportive of homophobia.
blondeboyz
But isn’t the Pope God’s chosen emissary on earth? So these Bishops are disobeying God?
Desert Boy
As I said weeks ago, Pope Francis would be wise to hire a food taster. The radical, Catholic Bishops, see Francis as a threat to the status quo.
Josh in OR
@blondeboyz: Naw, see…THEY are following God’s will. Francis is CLEARLY an Anti-Pope. I think that’s sort of like the AntiChrist, but more meaningless and involving fancier dresses.
Daniel
Root of Catholic and other Christian faiths is not to tolerate whatever is different from their values unless there is potential benefits that could lead them to compromise. I am happy to be an atheist. My soul belongs to myself completely, not to any horny “fathers.”
Roan
The Pope is infallible. The ladies need to suck it up and have a seat.
Cam
Good, let them expose themselves and challenge this Pope, it will make it easier for him to identify his enemies and demote them.
It really shows you how far the U.S. Bishops have fallen, they are attacking this Pope because he wants the church to concentrate on helping the needy, feeding the hungry etc… and they hate that because it doesn’t give them an excuse to hate.
Hopefully this Pope will spend the next few years cleaning house.

Go home article title, you’re drunk

I am genuinely sorry that my baby niece is going to be baptized Catholic this weekend…but the only good thing is that her parents are very staunchly pro-gay so there’s no chance that she’ll be brought up to believe all the anti-gay vitriol that the Church spews.
Ogre Magi
It is not like the new pope has really done all that much for gay people. He basically toes the party line.He is just more polite and media savvy.
Mack
This Pope is finally teaching what Jesus is all about. If I were him I would watch my moves around the Cardinals. I wouldn’t trust them as far as I could throw them. It wouldn’t be the first time a Pope was assassinated. I would also demote all the Cardinals in the US. But then I’m not a Catholic so it’s not my battle, only when they interfere with my rights.
Cam
@Ogre Magi:
He has demoted two homophobic cardinals, he excommunicated a bishop who molested kids, and he came out and said the Big Bang Theory and Evolution were real.
Doesn’t sound like he’s toeing the party line.
demented
@Cam: And I bet he will do much more for gays and other people, especially since he has only been pope for a year and a half. That isn’t much time to make sweeping reforms, root out corruption, etc.
But he can’t move as fast as he wants, clearly, because his responsibility is also to keep his church united and not risk people being led astray by corrupt bishops who hate the idea of NOT obsessing on people’s sex lives. So he has to try to keep it all together. It’s a delicate place to be. I don’t envy his job.
demented
@Daniel: I hate to break it to you, but that’s not the root of Christianity. That is the root of human nature. You just exhibited the fear and dislike of the “other” that all groups (including atheists) have.
Alan down in Florida
@Josh in OR: I thought that referred to the last (retired) Pope. But you misspelled. He was the Auntie Pope.
DarkZephyr
I like the article but would love the headline to be corrected to “U.S. Bishops Declare Open War On The Pope As Too Soft On Homosexuality” or “U.S. Bishops Declare Open War On The Pope As Too Hard On Homophobia” or something similar.
Alan down in Florida
@demented: Like Jesus I am a Jew (however lapsed) so I have no dog in the Catholic dogfight. But Pope Francis is like the Captain of a huge ship in a sea of glaciers. It takes a long time to turn a ship that is going in one direction (not the boy band) another way and avoid crashing into ice floes. I give Pope Francis a lot of credit for talking the talk and taking steps to walk the walk as well.
mcflyer54
Burke has been “reassigned” to the ceremonial position of protectorate of the Knights of Malta – this sounds like something dreamed up for a Monty Python sketch. Wonder if Burke will now be required to do the “funny walk” and if he’ll finally learn to keep his unwanted and unwelcomed comments to himself.

@Cam, I was under the impression that the Catholic church accepted evolution decades ago.
Daniel
@demented: My opinion was based the history of Christianity from the beginning of it until now. Over 1700 years, wars have been the main theme of Vatican. Constantine used “war in the name of god” to conquer Europe. Spanish tried to convert the mayan by fear and hates; didn’t they kill thousand of Mayan. Wars in Asia to “harvest souls for God.” the hate inside them has been accumulated over years and years, so if I said it is the root christianity, I did not overstate the facts. Btw, Islam inherited the same idea from Christian god.
jjose712
Poor bishops, he is going to chop their heads one by one.
He is trying to modernize the catholic church, and being an homophobic bigot is not cool anymore
jjose712
@Cam: To be fair, Catholics always believed in evolution, because to be fair they are way smarter than evangelicans.
They took the approach that God created the universe and for the rest accept scientific theories (which is way easier to defend that absurd young earth theories).
Catholics don’t do litheral interpretations of the Bible either.
benandy
A bunch of old ladies in dresses and funny hats, the church is all they have. They all came up under John Paul II and Benedict and Francis is WAY not of their stripe.
My next suggestion for “transfers” would be to add a confessional to the men’s washroom off St Peter’s Square. That could be staffed 24/7/365. That would take 5-10 of them right there. Once that was filled, I’m sure the Vatican has a pig farm someplace that needs mucking out.
Burke’s only “hope of salvation” is that Francis dies SOON. He’s only 66 [Francis is 77 & he’s already beaten both HIS parents, dad was 51 and mom was 70]. He could have hoped for another 10 years in his positions of high power. And Francis can create any number of such lowly positions AND require that they not travel, take a vow of silence, reduce their allowance, one even supposes there are still “apartments” in the Castle St. Angelo where those needing additional reasons to STFU could be “quartered”. I think Sister Teresa’s work with the lepers in India could take quite a few more hands, and, of course, there is all kinds of work that could be done in Africa, Ebola and AIDS patient care comes to mind.
Mr-DJ
@DarkZephyr: You are absolutely right about the incorrectness of the title. My thoughts exactly.

“Jesus loves the little children, all the children of HIS world, white, and yellow, black, and gay, there are precious in his sight, Jesus loves the little children of HIS world!”
The sooner these old jerk jolly crocks get over their country club elitism and realize that God is LOVE and He sent His son to deliver that LOVE, the sooner all churches, synagogues, temples, and chapels will flourish once again in attendance where peace, harmony, and love will be omnipotent.
tjr101
The day people like Rush Limbaugh and Sarah Palin started calling the Pope a Marxist was the day I really started to at least appreciate what he is trying to do with the church. You don’t ever want to be on the same side with the likes of right-wing Americans. The majority of conservative christians in America are petty, uneducated knuckle draggers and now they control congress.
Dakotahgeo
Frankly, the Cardinals are a bunch of bird brains!@jar23666: Unfortunately, you are spot on the mark! There are rumors that Pope Francis may well be the last Pope, but that rumor has been floating around since Benny the bird brain was in control!

Religion is such a sham and this is a prime example.

“Falcon Burke” has a nice ring to it.

Not since the Red Scare have the Catholic churches been able to generate so many hate-dollars. I can see why they would be upset that the gravy train was being threatened. This Pope will likely be taken out. This church is dark.

Those that can make you believe in fantasies can make you commit atrocities.

One big thing left out of the article is that the American Bishops are also out of touch with the American Catholics. The hierarchy says one thing, but American Catholics are the most liberal major denomination in America on issues such as gay marriage, abortion, birth control. For once we have a pope in line with American Catholics, but the middle men- the Bishops- are lagging decades behind. I am agnostic but know many Catholics in Seattle and personal knowledge and polls show the truth.
