Westboro Baptist Church Furious Nobody Cared When They Burned the Quran
With Gainesville’s Pastor Terry Jones and the Dove World Outreach Center’s plan to burn a bag of Qurans in Florida, at least one camp is furious for a whole different reason than Gen. David Petraeus.
Shirley Phelps Roper, daughter of Westboro Baptist Church founder Fred Phelps, says her camp burned the Quran on a Washington D.C. street in 2008 — and nobody cared. “We did it a long time before this guy,” she says.
And it breaks my heart to see the gaggle of Ropers trying so hard to score media attention and get trumped by some guy who’s so lazy he sticks his signs — which aren’t even brightly colored! — into the ground instead of waving them around on the street corner.
UPDATE: The church has called off the burn, reports Reuters.

They doth protest too much. I think Fred is an example of the Ted Haggard effect in action. Of all the arcane shit they can rant about, they pick gays. I still think something amazingly bad is in the pipeline for them. Of all the people they have willfully pissed off, there is bound to be a few whom are mentally unstable and willing to shell out for an AK.
I do wonder, though, how whatever warm glow they get from assuming they are being righteous ever overshadows the consistent and unebbing hatred they exhibit and that they get from everyone whom has ever heard of them.

These people are hated by so many people. Not just by gay people, but by all people, that the shock factor of their ignorance and hatred no longer amazes people. So they are now looked past for anything that they do. Nobody cares anymore about this group of shitstains… They are the vermin of this country and nobody cares about them anymore…. if we just ignore them, they will eventually go away or they will do something extreme enough to get them in trouble and they will be escorted to the jail cells.

Ok, so let me get this straight – Westboro Baptist Church are bitching because they didn’t get enough attention? How much more attention can a church comprised of 8 people (a rough guess) receive?
Actually, I love when this church gets all the press it does. It’s lunatic fringe hate-filled publicity whores like this that are inadvertently accelerating gay rights acceptance, as well as other forms of civil rights tolerance, by showing the insanity of the opposition when taken to its extreme.
So, thanks Westboro Baptist Church! Your assholishness and douchebaggery show everyone how truly ugly hate, ignorance and prejudice truly are.

@Gary B.: I didn’t say all Christians and heterosexuals were like that. I condemned the religion and the sexual orientation. Just like there are Muslims who oppose terrorism and want to reform their religion, but they are going against the doctrine of Islam, which says kill all non-believers and kill all gays.
The Westboro Baptist Cult is just following the Bible to the letter and taking it literally, disregarding things like context, authorship, intent, the concepts of parable and metaphor, and basic scientific plausibility.

One of the things for which they have the knack is alienating potential allies. You should read what they wrote about Isaac Hayes in response to an e-mail sent to them.
I hear you’re planning to picket Isaac Hayes funeral. Do you realise that Isaac Hayes was a Scientologist (he left South Park when the program poked fun at scientology) and that the church of Scientology is very definately (sic) on your side with respect to fags and dikes (sic).
L Ron Hubbard teaches that such people are sexual deviants who, if they cannot be cured, should be disposed of quietly and without sorrow.
You can also do your own research by obtaining copies of Dianetics or asking a true believer in scientology (some one who has been in it a long time) their views on fags, dikes (sic)and other sexual deviants and watch how guarded they are in their response, fearful of being seen as “un PC”; a decerning (sic) man will detect the truth. Of course the bolder ones may just come out and admit it.
Whatever other sins Isaac Hayes is guilty of he could hardly support the fags and dikes (sic) and belong to the Church of scientology, the two practices are simply incompatible. If you’re planning to base a picket on Isaac Hayes support of fags and dykes you’re ill informed.
