Everyone was waiting with bated breath to see how Britney Spears would do on her debut on The X Factor last night. Our friends who have worshiped her since grade school (theirs, not hers) were nervous for Brit, and our pals who love a good train wreck were hoping for a meltdown.
Well, it turns out Britney did just fine—even a little amazing. After all these years, and all those barefoot Starbucks runs, Britney Spears is still America’s sweetheart. So it was simply delicious seeing her tell contestants things like “The singing came in and it wasn’t…it wasn’t very nice” and “I think you’re like Vanilla Ice meets Lauryn Hill meets West Side Story.” (We had already heard her tell one poor sap “I feel uncomfortable with you even staring at me” in a promo, so it lost some punch the second time around.)
It was nice seeing Britney handle seeing her old singing partner Don Philips gracefully. But watching her with Demi Lovato—who, let’s face it, makes Britney seem like the poster child for mental health—was like watching Mama June with Honey Boo Boo: Just one star helping nurture another—and pure television gold!
During the show, our Twitter slaves were busy tweeting away about Brit, Demi, Don, Kaci and the other contestants and judges. Check out what they had to say, and then be sure to head back to @Queerty tomorrow night for more snark and gushing over the new season of The X-Factor!
How about we take this to the next level?
Our newsletter is like a refreshing cocktail (or mocktail) of LGBTQ+ entertainment and pop culture, served up with a side of eye-candy.
Did you think Britney whiffed it or nailed it? Should Demi be frisked for sharp objects? Is L.A. Reid really a zombie? Share your X-Factor thoughts in the comments section—or tell it to us at @Queerty!

Queerty/Dan,
I’m normally a pretty open guy to any kind of humor but I find it extremely disappointing, upsetting and quite offensive that you would joke around with someone having a major problem with self infliction/cutting. We all enjoy (tasteful) humor, but there are some subjects that should be given sensitivity. I don’t think you would ever poke fun at the topic of gay bullying, so why you feel this serious subject is okay to harass is beyond me. For someone (Demi) who has obviously had her share of mental health problems/dealing with cutting, and has actually been such an advocate against any kind of bullying, I think there are plenty of other jokes/humor that could be utilized.

There is a youtube clip going around where Demi Lovatto told a guy that “Lots of people work hard, but don’t make it” and he replied “That must be why you use Auto-tune” And then Spears chimed in “Who let you on the stage” and he replied “The same people that hired you to be a judge”.
Did that cut make it on aire?

I would love to see Britbrit come out onstage and sing for us live. But that will never happen because the girl can’t sing. Don’t get me wrong, I’ve enjoyed many of her pop songs and videos but without her songwriters and her stylists and yes, the auto-tune, she’d be nowhere.

Britney is America’s sweetheart. When did that happen? Can’t we pick someone more…stable…for that title?

@Bennett:Well said. That poster child comment made me very uncomfortable.

I stunned they were able to put their footprints at Graham’s Chinese Theater!! They are not movie stars!! This really lowers the Hollywood Experience….

Britney was so uncomfortable with the Don situation, I felt uncomfortable myself. It was a cringe-worthy moment.
