Allen Ginsberg is a pretty lucky so-and-so: First the nebbishy gay poet was portrayed by actor hunk James Franco in the 2010 film Howl and now Daniel Radcliffe, fresh off his run on Broadway’s How to Succeed in Business is playing the Beat legend in the upcoming murder drama Kill Your Darlings, directed by first-timer John Krokidas.
Radcliffe began filming scenes this week in New York’s Greenwich Village, where he got to cozy up to co-star Dane DeHaan, who plays love interest Lucien Carr.
Darlings also stars Chris Evans as Jack Kerouac, Ben Foster as William Burroughs and Elizabeth Olsen as Kerouac’s first wife, Edie. According to EW, Jessie Eisenberg was slated to play Ginsberg back when the project began three years ago. It’s probably for the best: Radcliffe has had some luck as a spectacles-sporting protagonist before.

Literary biographies can be soporific. This however was a fascinating period in Ginsberg’s life; I’ll be looking forward to seeing the film.

I’m a little bummed Ben Whishaw is no longer attached to the project, but that disappointment is minimal. I’m thrilled to see both Radcliffe and Evans take on such provocative roles (and I’m not talking about the gay thing… that’s the least controversial bit about that crew!). It’s a particularly smart move on the former’s part. Daniel Radcliffe will be one of those rare child stars to make it just fine well into adulthood.

Is the film going to tell how Ginsberg was a known chickenhawk and member of NAMBLA? Or how he fantasized about incest with his brother and father?
