Maryland’s Edwin Echegoyen has been fretting over the possible deportation of his husband Rodrigo Martinez — who was scheduled to be shipped to his native El Salvador on Wednesday. But for now, there’s reason to celebrate: The couple of eight years, who legally wed in D.C., will remain together after the Department of Homeland Security halted the deportation amidst public outcry and national media attention, and ordered Martinez to be released and remain in the U.S., so long as he checks in with DHS once a month. And while keeping Martinez at home with his husband is the ultimate goal, that he even has to check in with the feds is yet another condition straight couples wouldn’t have to endure.

This is great, and all of these recent stories of these deportations halted are uplifting, but the laws need to change and to prevent these situations from even occurring in the first place.
