Popular YouTuber Lohanthony has denounced his “same-sex attraction” in order to commit to “Christian celibacy.”
The now 21-year-old, whose real name is Anthony Quintal, used to post videos like this:

However, his latest video strikes a decidedly different tone.
In “Jesus delivers — surviving sexuality”, posted on August 21, Quintal discusses his “sexuality and call to Christian celibacy.”

He opens up about his struggles with drug and alcohol addiction, and reveals that he was sexually abused by an “older boy” when he was a child.
But then he takes a troubling turn by connecting his substance abuse and other addictive tendencies to pursuing his “same-sex attraction,” giving fans cause for concern that he’s undergone some form of religious ex-gay therapy.
“It’s no coincidence that through pursuing my same-sex attraction, I was also addicted to alcohol, I was also addicted to weed, I was also trying hallucinogenics, I was also addicted to money, I was addicted to views, I was addicted to attention.”
Quintal also says his “search for gay love…would ultimately end with disappointment… a void, which was later filled by Jesus Christ.”

Someone needs to tell him and give examples of how other Christians, many of them, openly welcome and love gays, and he doesn’t need to become celibate to gain Christ’s love. I had a young friend when I lived in Austin who did this turnabout and is now associated with a fundamentalist independent church group. He now denies that he is gay and will attempt to find a female partner. It is so sad that someone has brainwashed him to believe this hateful crap.

I completely agree, his addiction to attention simply shifted to a different audience. It is clear that this person is still young and trying to figure out who he is, and that is not a bad thing. He has a right to change his opinion and lifestyle however many times he wants. The fact that he has stated his history of “addiction” to “things” is exactly why you can’t take his word for anything serious. His preachy attempt to gain a different audience is probably because he didn’t get enough attention from his previous audience. His “church” is probably all up in his Instagram and FB praising him for being an ex gay convert and he is just riding that wave until it runs out as well. Pretty soon he will get bored with them and then he will become the “ex gay convert that was brain washed by his church, and finally realized that he was never supposed to be ashamed of sexuality / identity” Then he will try to ride that wave of attention from anyone who will listen. It’s a wonder to me how he even became a popular youtuber, he is more like a cartoon character of a real person. Let those who enjoy eating crap eat crap and just be thankful that we didn’t end up like this confused kid.

So he’s traded many addictions for just one. Christianity. He will lead a miserable life, and if he’s lucky, he’ll accept his sexual orientation and figure out how to live with it and his religion. The indigenous people of this continent realized and accepted that both sexual orientation and gender identity are on a spectrum and you were allowed to be yourself. I also have a greater respect for their religion which was based in living in harmony with nature.

Whenever people go back into the closet and go through conversion therapy they usually blame everything under the sun for being gay. Weed doesn’t make you gay. Being unhappy doesn’t make you gay. But when these people realise this the conversion therapy’s effects can be so harsh that the people subjected to it suffer mentally.

Conversion therapy is banned in many states because it is a fraud. A 21 year old still has a lot of brain development and maturity to develop. Loanthony is a child even at 21 and always blamed others for problems and issues he faced. His conversion to a Christian self-loathing ex-Gay Celibate is more a fad and publicity stunt . He never seemed honest or intelligent to me. Check back a few years from now–if you can even find anything about him then–and see how this new fad worked out for him. I personally will not bother.

There is a long list of things the “queer community” and “gay media” needs to be more willing to confront and more readily and honestly talk about: childhood traumas, struggles with addiction, struggles with mental health, internalized homophobia, fluidity, and the gender, romantic sexual, affection, emotional, relationship spectrum. One of the reasons these types of things happen (and there are a lot of reasons why these things happen) is because these are not topics we are willing to truly attack, discuss, breakdown. Instead, the “community” as a whole does indeed choose to more readily hide behind things like identities, behaviors, drug use, obsession with attention and ego boosts, religion. Religion gives people the “answers” that the “queer community” won’t. We need to start creating our own answers and having more honest, uncomfortable conversation. More than likely in a few years this will seem like another dead-end for this young man. But ultimately, you can’t control people’s lives, their journeys, their motivations, their struggles. Becoming anti-gay is never the answer though.

Religion is not a replacement for mental health, self-understanding and self-respect. Just like drugs, fame, sex aren’t replacements for those things either. But people stay reaching for things that will either make them feel like they belong and are worthy or will give them some (often temporary) peace of mind. There’s a lot of conversations we need to be having but just aren’t. And that makes it easier for people to fall into self-hate and prejudice or fall into self-destructive patterns. But ultimately, you can’t control how people choose to live their lives.

I’m gay because I was born this way. I’ve always been attracted to men. I new I was attracted to men long before I knew what sex was – gay or straight. I knew I was gay without having sex of any kind. After having experienced straight and gay sex, my orientation was confirmed for me.

Male homophobia, internalized homophobia, gay shaming, religious persecution and support of the closet are still so prominent. I think that leads to a lot of folks immediately going on attack or defense. But that reaction ultimately doesn’t do anyone any good. I would feel less sympathy if he were older. But he still very young, and it is apparent he’s contended with issues of trauma, mental health and self-destructive instincts from a very young age. He also probably never garnered any genuine self-worth and self-esteem. While so many religious folks tend to take advantage of people like that.
Once again, this is why we need to have more educated conversations centered on uncomfortable topics. Conversation around mental health struggles, addictions, dealing with past trauma have got to come to the foreground. Conversations around confusions, fluidity, paraphiliacs, the gender, sexual, affection, romantic, emotional, relationship spectrum have got to come to the foreground. Conversations around internalized phobias, self-misandry, self-misandry have got the come to the foreground. Everything can’t just be about identity, attacking prejudice and promoting pretty people.

That’s why looking up to randoms on social media is never a good idea for young folks or anybody. Ultimately, everyone has their own journeys and their own struggles. The video was irresponsible and it did scream internalized homophobia. But being 21, having contended with abuse and addiction and likely depression does give you a bit of leeway. I just think immediately jumping on him and shaming him is not the route to take.

The religious reparative therapy programs have to make their “victims,” as I call them, hate themselves so they’ll want to change. He’ll soon find out it doesn’t work, and he’ll be driven further into the depression and addiction.

We can’t blame everything on homophobia or internalized homophobia. Not being able to cope with past trauma is real. Substance abuse and mental health problems are real. Not knowing how to deal with fluidity or confusions is real. Religious groups often take advantage of those things, along with homophobia, internalized homophobia, self-misandry and self-misogyny. Things are often much bigger and more complicated than many like to examine. The more we ignore a lot of “queer’s individual circumstances and their traumas and mental health issues the easier it is for them to fall into the “born again” or “I hate ‘gays” category. But people (and the media) don’t want to deal with the messiness of it all.
