A gay Connecticut couple is preparing to stand trial after facing accusations by several of their nine adopted sons of sexual abuse.
George Harasz and Douglas Wirth had been raising nine adopted boys along with two of Harasz’s biological children when two years ago, two of the boys accused them of sexual assault. The other children in their home denied the abuse, but were subsequently removed from the couple’s care.
Harasz and Wirth initially entered pleas in January to one felony count each of risk of injury to a minor, agreeing to suspended prison sentences. But on Friday, one of the victims made new allegations of abuse during a pre-sentence investigation, prompting the couple to withdraw their plea deal and seek to clear their names.
The Hartford Courant reports:
The new allegations of abuse revealed in the pre-sentence investigation are “dramatically different and more extreme,” the judge said.
“[The son said] he has scars from being held down and raped and that those injuries were inflicted by a weapon,” Zagaja said, quoting the report…
[Department of Children and Families] Commissioner Joette Katz, who was also in court, said the new allegation would immediately be referred for investigation. She also revealed that three of five younger children the couple adopted have alleged abuse by Wirth and Harasz to counselors.
Although the sentencing did not proceed, one of the alleged teenage victims spoke and urged that Wirth and Harasz be jailed. He said the physical, psychological and sexual abuse began when he was 6 years old. Wirth and Harasz would touch him and violate him, he said, and would make him satisfy them sexually. The alleged victim — the same one who made the new allegations — said Harasz and Wirth abused him when no one else was around.
“They took turns raping me over and over,” he said. “Anyone who would do this to a child is a sick, demented person.”
Several others spoke out in support of Harasz and Wirth, including the biological brother of two of the alleged victims.
Carlos Harasz said his brothers were lying and that the abuse they described had been at the hands of other foster parents. He maintained that the couple did not abuse him and his brothers, but rather gave them a “normal, painless life” after years of being abused and neglected by other foster families as well as their own mother.
He went on to ask why it took three incidents to get him removed from his mother’s home, but only “one statement from a disturbed kid to kill the souls of Doug and George.” Carlos Harasz said that the DCF was “played by my brothers” and “took the word of an angry, damaged, disturbed boy and destroyed a family.”
The couples lawyers plan to present evidence — such as school reports that outline lying by the accusers and hallucinations on the part of one of the victims — and testimony by therapists that would undercut the allegations the brothers have made.
Judge Joan K. Alexander said the DCF had been actively involved in the family, had investigated allegations of abuse — sustaining one — although the agency had departed from its own rules by allowing Harasz and Wirth to adopt so many children.
Alexander ordered the parties back in court on June 5 to allow police time to investigate the new allegations and report to prosecutors. The trial will determine if the previous complaints were true and if the DCF had been incompetent.

This does not look good, however it turns out.

Interesting, there are multiple stories about gay kids being targeted for abuse, gay families being attacked etc… and this is the story that Queerty decides to run.
Kind of like when Queerty was running story after story about people who supposedly lied about being gay bashed.
So just so I understand it….don’t report on what the Mormon church does to fund anti-gay political activities nationwide but run every story you can find that can be used to link gays to child abuse and lying about hate crimes?
ArthurTreacher
Red flags should have gone up when they adopted so many children – and all boys. That looks really bad. We will probably never know the truth of the matter, but their lives are ruined whether they did it or not We hear all of these rosy stories of adoptions, but there is a very dark side when dealing with damaged children. They may also have been influenced by anti-gay forces to turn on the parents, or maybe they just are rebellious. It is a scary thought.
tdx3fan
This has NOTHING to do with them being gay. My initial reaction is that they had 11 kids!?! Seriously. There is no way you can effectively raise 11 kids, and for each one of those foster kids they get a paycheck of around $1,000 a month. That is an insane incentive to keep taking on foster children. If this was a straight couple, I would crucify them for their stupidity and possibly the abuse of the system, so I will do even though they are gay.
tdx3fan
@Cam: It does us NO justice to hide the actions of those that are the least amongst us. Seriously, their sexual identity has absolutely no bearing in this case. Either they are bad parents or they are good parents. Gay parents can be just as bad as straight ones.
tdx3fan
@ArthurTreacher: Where I live, a man and his wife and his daughter was just slaughtered by the daughters boyfriend. By all accounts, she was an adopted piece of trash and the adoption never went well. My partner remarked that he knows of very few adoptions of foster children that actually go well.
Damaged children are like damaged animals, some can be rehabilitated and some can not. However, we do behavioral testing on damaged animals and put down the ones that can not be rehabilitated.
tsmithknox
Children with a history of abuse can level false accusations convincingly. This ability creates a risky, and protentially devastating, situation for anyone wishing to care for them.

That isn’t the point of my post. The point of my post is in Queerty’s choice of stories. They want to do a story about gays who are bad? Fine, the problem is that when they are doing zero articles on the Mormon church and their organized well funded anti-gay activities, when they are doing multiple stories on people who supposedly lied about being gay bashed, and now are doing stories on possible molestation of children by these two men, that isn’t being open about the facts. That is choosing to go in an editorial direction that purposely paints gays in a negative light.
Just curious, how many positive and uplifting stories of gay adoption have we seen on here recently as a counter to this one? Considering those are easy to find I find the choice interesting.

How is this a story of gays gone bad? This is a story of gays potentially being railroaded.

@Merv: It’s a story of parents gone bad. It could just as easily been opposite-sex parents, but it happens to be gay parents in this case.

This doesn’t look good for us. This will only fuel even more hate. Jesus! I am so tired of fighting and defending myself and my community. I’m tired.

@yaoming: Thank you. Yes, the right lunatics will try to use this against us, but there are far more cases of foster abuse among the straights.

If you ever get a chance, see the documentary Capturing The Freidmans…..
I remember my teen years well and would have sucked any cock I could have got my hands on and ended up having a relationship with a teacher. I could have easily got pissed off at him over some idiotic thing and destroyed his life with a simple phone call. Yet, I was just concerned with getting more dick.
I have such admiration for gay couples who adopt or choose to raise children and just as much respect for people like myself and partner of 20 years who came to the conclusion that we are too selfish to raise kids. But gay or straight……when you get past 3 or 4 kids….I don’t see how anyone could be proper parents. Like Michelle & Marcus Bachman…it is clear they are operating an baby sitting for profit set up.

Before you say that you may want to read the statements of some of their other adopted kids…
“Harasz and Wirth, Carlos said, gave he and his brothers a “normal, painless life” after years of being abused and neglected by other foster families and his own mother. He asked why it took three incidents to get him removed from his mother’s home, but only “one statement from a disturbed kid to kill the souls of Doug and George.”
DCF and the police failed to properly investigate and “took the word of an angry, damaged, disturbed boy and destroyed a family.” He said “DCF was played by my brothers.”

Interesting enough too…..In Queerty’s daily e-mail that is sent out, guess what the headline was out of all the stories that have happened today?
Yep, this one. So not only ignoring the Mormon Church’s continued funding of NOM and it’s attacks on us, not only doing multiple stories of people supposedly lying about being gay bashed, not only doing no good stories about adoption……they do this story and then it is their HEADLINE in the blast e-mail that is sent out.
Interesting…….

Gay or str8…special place in a firey place for anyone that abuses a child! My only fear is that an anti gay bigot could AND WILL create lies ….In any case I hope IT IS A LIE! I really can’t imagine a gay male doing something like that…it’s ALWAYS a self identified hetero …
tomron
@tdx3fan: In fact, I have always somewhat laughingly, but “underlyingly” seriously said that we gays reserve the right to have just as many crooks, bigots, liars, cheats, scoundrels …….(you get the picture) proportionate to our population as there are of those people in the general population.
So, of course we could and probably do have as many pedophiles proportionately as does the population at large.
Having said that, we should ALL remember that this couple is being investigated as charged, and that they have not been convicted or adjudged guilty. I’d hate to have to make that judgement, given the quality of the boys previous lives, and the psychological damage done to them before they were in the care of these two.
In the final analysis, they should be given a fair and impartial trial and judgement, but if found guilty should be strung up by the gonads for what they (allegedly) did – which is no more than I would hope for a heterosexual couple in the same circumstance. Pedophilia is pedophilia, and being LGBT has nothing to do with that!
alterego1980
@Charli Girl: You’ve made your point but I also think you’re being a tad unfair. Queerty has done articles on the “YouTube dad’s” whose son wrote a letter to C.J. Roberts and other similar uplifting stories of gay parents of adopted children. If you instead stick to your point about the Mormons, then fine, you probably have a valid beef. But don’t forget, this is not by any means an investigative hard news source. It’s more of a rag or an E! online of the gay world. If you take issue with that, then state so.
Derek Williams
@Cam: It may not be of interest to you, but I am pretty well certain that it is of utmost interest to anyone with a concern about children being raised in same-sex households, and that includes other same-sex couples who are fighting to have their relationships recognised through marriage.
We cannot run from cases like this, we need to own them, and if proven, disown them. Hiding from them can only lead others to conclude the homophobes are right, no matter how wrong they are.

Child abuse investigations are weighed on a preponderance of the evidence. Criminal decisions are based on a shadow of a doubt. It seems to me that thew were ready to cop to the lesser plea as a nuisance to avoid attorney fees but withdrew on bogus criminal allegations. I hope they are vindicated. Either way, it doesn’t look good for Connecticut CPS or QUEERTY. In a world where this crap happens a gazillion times to one with drug addicted, domestically violent, mentally impaired heterosexuals THIS is the front page of today’s newsletter? REALLY?
alterego1980
This story of adoption is very troubling. If for sake of argument, the parents did not actually abuse these children, they did abuse the system. And the state let it happen. 9 children is too many for two parents. There are reasons for limiting the number of adoptions, one is that especially if the kids have been abused previously, they need lots of attention and care. The kids can’t get the necessary face time they require. That is a sad situation all around.
p-candotorg
So difficult to give an unbiased opinion. I come from years of abused in catholic boarding schools. But it never come to mind to accuse other innocent people close or afar from me.
I seriously believe that with what children and teenagers see and hear now on TV society lays seeds. Seeds for what some call ” damaged” (a questionable description) children.
It seems that to easily now with very little support, adults straight or gay may end up being also falsely accused. I wonder what it is the boys are set through to question their accusations. Saying simply he did this or that isn’t enough in my eyes. If I was involved I would want to have serious descriptions. I have written 500 pages about my learning horrible learning curve.
BUT unless the couple are multi-millionaires, and even if so, why does the system allows them to raise 11 boys? That is insane and probably there is chance one or two boys are gay. And that may create serious problems within the household where maybe one or two want to hurt other and take it out on the parents to get his ultimate punishment on the others.
To the boys defense, it comes to my mind, not knowing the kids ages, but imagining where the come from within the system full of cracks one wonders why would they for no reason start something that will send them back into the system. As sad as it sounds that is where they may end up again.
I hope a peaceful solution will be found to clear this mess.
lmartinez101
I hope to God this isn’t true. Both for the kid’s and parent’s sake. There have been far too many situations where damaged kids have wrongfully accused good people of terrible things. Either way no one wins here. The parents will be tarnished forever. If it is true then I hope those kids get the long term therapy needed.
This does not bode well for the gay community. It’s not like we need more fuel added to the fire. Anti-gays will have a field day with this unfortunate situation.
DarkZephyr
@ChiChi Man: No one is going to care that there are more instances of straights abusing children. No one. How do I know? Look at Ogre Magi and 2eo who LOOOOOVE to constantly bring up pedophilia in the Catholic Church any time Christianity is mentioned. The vast majority of priests do not molest children, but people who hate Catholicism can only focus on that. It will be the same here. Those who hate us will only focus on this story and they will blow it up. I just hope this hasn’t doomed us at the Supreme Court in June.
Observant
When my partner and I first decided to become parents we enrolled in DCFS training with the intention of fostering to adopt. Midway through the program, the instructors mentioned that 90 percent of foster children will make claims of sexual abuse against their parents (gay or straight). Whether true or not, the authorities must follow through in each instance. The kids know that this is the surest way to retaliate against parental authority, even if it means being thrown back into the system. The accusation alone destroys lives, particularly so for gay parents who sadly and unfairly fall under suspicion just because of the falsehoods surrounding homosexuality and pedophilia. We decided to adopt infants internationally rather than potentially jeopardize the life we’d worked so hard to build. I hope the claims are false and that these men will be exonerated, but even if that occurs, they will always live under the cloud of suspicion and mistrust that such accusations create.
Will L
I can almost see nine children if they were providing foster care. How in the world did they ADOPT nine though?!? I know that if you adopt a state-custody child, you will receive a monthly subsidy payment. I hope that wasn’t their driving force. You can’t possibly provide proper attention and upbringing to that many children – especially troubled children. At best, these guys were running the equivalent of a puppy mill.
DonW
@Cam: Don’t shoot the messenger. You can bet that our enemies are following this story VERY closely, and they will use it against us. I’d rather be made aware of it by my own community, even if it’s an ugly blot among all the pretty pictures of Gos’s abs, than get blindsided by it later.
Matt1961
@tdx3fan: Wow, as the father of 3 wonderful children I have to say this is possibly the worst analogy I’ve read on Qweerty. Honestly, comparing foster kids to damaged animals…
Matt1961
@Cam: Wow, what’s with you and the Mormon Church. To be honest if anyone has any doubts that the LDS are financially vested in any anti gay campaigns after what they did for Prop 8… this is really not new news Cam. No offense but that’s how I see it.
Merv
I’m not sure why people are so eager to believe the accuser, especially when his own brother says he’s lying. The fact that the couple was ready to plead means nothing, except that their lawyer recognizes the hysteria that can take over in cases like this. After the McMartin preschool and the Wenatchee child abuse cases, I’m very suspicious of mere accusation when the alleged victim is very young.

@Cam: So just so I understand it… You would rather hear about old news instead of these poor boys who may or may not have been abused and raped by gay men? Get your priorities straight. Oh and its not just the Mormon church that puts funds aside for funding anti-gay activities. So, either name all the religions that do so or do not name any at all.
ecllips
@Cam: But I am guessing you have not done your research as to what religious and political parties are the ones helping to fund anti- gay activities. Hence why you have picked an easy target such as the Mormon(LDS)church. I bet you probably didn’t even know there was a Gay organization against marriage equality?? Yeah that’s right! There is! So quit trying to single out the Mormon church and do some research. Honestly. I am a gay Man who is not Mormon, but I have some Mormon friends and guess what… they support marriage equality and said they would help plan my wedding if I ever got married. Shocking? Not really, Mormons(at least the ones I have met) are good people.
dkmagby
@Vegas Tearoom: As someone who works in DCFS, I can tell you that you’re very right. Though what is disturbing is that Connecticut let them adopt that many children. I don’t know what their foster care system is like, but even in a populated state that I live in, there is no reason they should be taking on that many children. It even says they broke their own policies in allowing them to adopt so many children.
Plus, it’s amazing how quiet sex abuse can be. With that many kids, it’s possible to just hide it away as the “crazy kid” and the others can easily deny it to cope with it themselves.
jayfox
As a gay adoptive parent the comments above really make me angry…First I dont care if you are straight gay or martian if you hurt a child physically mentally or sexually you deserve the worst punishment possible. Kids are not damaged they are kids who suffer from adults who are selfish and see children as possessions/objects to use how ever they see fit. To the individual that compared children to dogs you should be ashamed of yourself. Both my partner and I have provided temporary homes to more then twenty foster kids over the last five years and all of them have been abused one way or another by their straight parents. I have never met a child that did not respond well to a loving home that provided a safe place to be. I dont know the specifics of this case and I cant condem these guys because I dont know all the facts. That being said I would rather be shot then “entered pleas in January to one felony count each of risk of injury to a minor” this tells me these guys are not innocent victims here and there is more to this story. If these guys hurt these kids I hope they spend the rest of their lives behind bars. As for all the people who are attacking Queerty for
publishing this story you should rethink that .As bad as it makes these guys seem its a fact that most pedophiles that hurt children are straight not gay. We need to be open and honest and about any abuse towards children so that we can deal with them as a community and not hide them away like the Catholic church.

1. Nice try troll, the easiest way to identify non-gays on here is by them saying “I am gay” or “As a gay man”.
2. Yes, there are anti-gay groups NOM, that multiple mainstream newspapers refer to as a “MORMON FRONT GROUP” and yet Queerty will not. This group is largely responsible for a huge number of anti-gay bills and fighting gay rights.
3. You have made more than one post defending the Mormon church against being singled out….as we learned before when you trolls kept coming in here, you all LOVE to play the victims don’t you?
Cam
@DonW:
This isn’t an issue about ignoring these stories. This IS an issue of editorial choices. When a gay site runs multiple stories about peeople supposedly lying about being gay bashed, but no stories about people actually being gay bashed, that is an editorial choice.
When a site runs articles about gay adoptions possibly horribly gone wrong but no stories about legit ones, then they have chosen to take an editorial point of view that gays adopting is bad.

@Cam: LOL, Troll?? what are you 12? The only people who call others that are in fact the trolls themselves. And yes I do have a few posts defending Mormons since like I said I have friends who are Mormon because of the state where I grew up it is kinda hard not to know any Mormons…impossible really. Thatch not something I am hiding. And I can say if I am gay if I want to. You? I hardly believe you are gay though so get the heck off this site. And I LOVE how you are trying to play the victim by calling to call me the victim? I am fighting for equality for marriage and for representation in everything else. Isn’t there a Gay & Lesbian Family Association somewhere, ethically run to impeccable standards, that can publicly comment on issues like this, so as to make it clear that both as a community and as individuals, we abhor child abuse of any kind?
I don’t want these two to become poster boys for the LGBT movement (unless they’re proved innocent of course).

He definitely can vouch that “I am gay”.

I am not a fan of all the articles in Qweerty but I must admit that they do serve the whole gambit. Would you rather have everything PRO GAY? This way Qweerty gives rounded coverage .. the good with the bad … and it really does sound like the system is coming down a bit hard on the couple .. and it is most likely because they are gay. I live near Palm Springs and the area DOES seem a bit homophobic … even though the population is 70% gay … no one seems to mind and most consider it “normal”. I WOULD like to see how this trial proceeds, while hoping that the couple be found innocent and not guilty … but they may not be allowed to have adopted children …. OMG … they MIGHT find that they need to get a job.

If we can get back to the story vs. Mormon bashing or editorial habits…
…It occurs to me that if a pair of foster parents, regardless of sex or orientation, can mange to handle nine or more kids, they have a unique talent and must work hard at the task. With that many kids there MUST be organization and a lot of discipline, rules, assigned chores, and most importantly, a great love of children. It is quite likely that those few making charges could or would not adjust and adhere to the proper behavior demanded, (and probably did not in previously assigned homes). What better way to “get back” at the demanding adoptive parents than by accusing them of egregious behavior? Unless ALL the adoptees corroborate the accusations (and kids are highly observant!), there is little doubt the accusal is fallacious!
Whatever happened to innocent until proven guilty?
