Gus Kenworthy and Adam Rippon share a tender kiss: “We’re queer. Get used to it.”

The Olympics is an incredible opportunity for the world to synchronize its attention on a pressing issue, but this year Team USA is creating tension even within the United States.

For the two out male athletes competing for medals under the American flag, every move will be scrutinized.

So thank the ghost of Sylvester that Gus Kenworthy and Adam Rippon have decided to test out their microphone from Pyeongchang with this clear message:

“We’re here. We’re queer. Get used to it,” the caption reads, echoing a slogan that dates back to Queer Nation and the HIV/AIDS activism of the early ’90s and beyond.

This is the America we should feel proud to bring to the world stage, despite what some may argue. Yes, straight people can be proud of inclusion, too.

Kenworthy and Rippon are each nominated in the Winter Olympian category of this year’s Queerties — head here and show them some love!

They also shared these posts:

“The #OpeningCeremony is a wrap and the 2018 Winter Olympic Gaymes are officially under way!” he wrote. “I feel incredibly honored to be here in Korea competing for the US and I’m so proud to be representing the LGBTQ community alongside this amazing guy! Eat your heart out, Pence. #TeamUSA #TeamUSGay”

Tonight I walked in the #OpeningCeremony and got to watch my old friend @Yunaaaa light the Olympic flame. Representing the USA is one of the greatest honors of my life and being able to do it as my authentic self makes it all so much sweeter.
