Who’s the latest right-wing Fundamentalist nutbag to rail against the gays? None other than sitcom teen Mike Seaver!
Former Growing Pains star Kirk Cameron, who now makes his bucks with schlocky Christian disaster flicks like Left Behind, was on Piers Morgan Tonight on Friday. (Why? Who knows.) When Morgan asked him about marriage equality, Cameron said same-sex unions and homosexuality were “destructive to so many of the foundations of civilization.”
Cameron also claimed that “marriage is almost as old as dirt, and it was defined in the Garden between Adam and Eve. One man, one woman for life till death do you part. So I would never attempt to try to redefine marriage. And I don’t think anyone else should either.”
Has someone told Cameron that Adam and Eve were never officially married? Or the institution of marriage isn’t defined as being between one man and one woman anywhere in the Bible? And surely, as a Christian, he knows that most of the figures in the Old Testament had multiple wives (not to mention concubines and slaves).
Unsurprisingly, the aging teen idol’s comments incensed GLAAD. “In this interview, Kirk Cameron sounds even more dated than his 1980s TV character,” said Herndon Graddick, the media watchdog’s Senior Director of Programs.
“Cameron is out of step with a vast majority of Americans, particularly people of faith who believe that their gay and lesbian brothers and sisters should be loved and accepted based on their character and not condemned because of their sexual orientation… Americans are seeing that marriage is about committed couples who want to make a lifelong promise to take care of and be responsible for each other—and that gay and lesbian couples need equal security and legal protections. That’s not ‘redefining’ anything.”
Now if you’ll excuse us, we’re off to write some slash-fiction featuring Mike and Boner in a hot-and-heavy flip-flop scene.

If anyone was expecting intelligence from ‘Bibleman’,all they needed to do was accidently channel-surf by his present dreck-fest on your local Christian Channel(we have 6 BTW. No “Satanic” Catholic or Jewish ones need apply to Cox in this part of the Bible Belt…)
Brian
I hate when these types say “redefine marriage”. It always bugs me. Marriage, in my eyes, has always been between two people who love each other. Done! That’s it. Maybe, because of narrow-mindedness, certain people will have to change their outlook, but I don’t see any words being redefined.
As for Kirk Cameron, I couldn’t care less what he thinks. I’m glad Christianity has “worked” for him.
Red S.
“Why? Who knows.”
I think the attention Cameron’s bullshit is getting shows exactly why. Piers Morgan is quite the publicity seeking louse and he would have known full well Kirk would say SOMETHING along these lines. He certainly didn’t have him on to talk about his, uh, film career.
jason
I think some gay men lead destructive lifestyles. But it isn’t the definition of homosexuality. Homosexuality merely refers to sexual orientation, and not the choices you make that may lead to self-destruction.
TJ
This is about Piers Morgan needing ratings. I didn’t think people payed any attention to this insane religious (most likely closet case) fanatic.
Jimcracky
I place Cameron directly in that long, long line of conservatives who are suspiciously homophobic. To quote that fine old playwright William Shakespeare, “Methinks the lady protesteth overmuch.”
Alexa
I think GLAAD would be better off complaining to CNN and Piers Morgan for giving him a platform to spew his garbage. Cameron is a washed up former child star and the only reason he was on the show was because of his views. Shame on CNN for giving him publicity.
christopher di crapito
Cameron is suspected to be the answer in several blind items meaning that he is indeed deeply closeted.
prince of snides aka divkid
so far in the closet he’s in fuckin narnia.
Tom
Him and his sister are a bunch of has been bigots
xamthor
@jason: Plenty of heterosexual men have destructive habits, commit crimes, and make horrible mates. Yet, no one ever thinks to blame heterosexuality for such things.
Chopsie
Why would anyone even bother to talk to him about it? He’s an ex-C List Star with no influence anywhere & basically, unemployable in Hollywood.
David Ehrenstein
@Chopsie: He’s on the show because Piers Morgan’s a phobe and Kirk Cameron is his “answer” to the “8” play.
That’s really what’s going on here. cameron has been out of the business for years and currently has nothig to offer the world save “Christian” propaganda
John
Of course he’s saying disparaging comments….he’s playing ALL of us for free media. How the hell else would Kirk Cameron be in the news??? I don’t necessarily hate Piers Morgan…but why in the hell would he give a nobody like Kirk Cameron airtime? Kirk is selling something and he’s getting paid to say stuff….just like Elizabeth Hasselback. Do you think Hasselback is intelligent enough to come up with anything smart to say? No! She gets briefed daily on what to say so she can get a paycheck.
David Ehrenstein
Here’s an AWESOME take-down of Kirk

damn, he MUST be getting old cuz that acceptable-in-the-80’s yellow pants* and braces (y’all call them suspenders?) combo is almost kinda working for me.
still a christian pig, though.
*(however, we in civilised lands now reserve the term “pants” for underwear: also, trollies, grundies, skids, ball-stranglers….. dine out. you’re welcome.)

@jason: Straight and gays both have a segment that leaves destructives lives, but that doesn’t mean all do.
califig
Don’t blame the messenger, He just spoke about one thing that God does not approve of. If you say you believe in God and love Him, your smart not picking the fight with Him, because you will lose.
GreatGatsby2011
@califig: *whew* Thank goodness I don’t believe in God.
Lady Haha
I always thought Boner was the cute one.

F**k all you Christians…with a big-thick-cross!
Most normal, healthy minded folks know your religion is all man made BS, fabricated…C-U-L-T that you brain wash children with. It’s meant to control the masses, control others lives, and give you a FALSE hope that you’ll go up in a cloud next to a big man who’ll praise your existence. Take your Bible to a pawn shop and trade it in for a brain, you Christian Talibans.
Ken
Today we have Dr. Kirk Cameron here, who has his doctorate in psychology with an emphasis on human sexuality to explain to us why he disagrees with the vast majority of his professional peers about homosexuality. Kirk?
–I don’t have a doctorate in psychology.
Oh, my mistake. It’s an MD with a specialization in psychiatry, then.
–No, I don’t have that either.
Well, then, what qualifies you to speak to the issue?
–I am a Christian and I read the Bible.
What a coincidence! I am a Christian and I read the Bible, but I don’t claim any expertise on this.
–Well, I think it is obvious. I read in Genesis where marriage is for procreation and gays can’t procreate. It’s right there.
Yes, in Genesis 3 it says that. However, that is the curse for committing the sin of eating the fruit of the tree, not the purpose of marriage. In Genesis 2 the purpose of marriage is companionship and mutual help. You are a Christian, right? Do you agree with Jesus that the Bible prophesies Him and is about Him? Do you agree with John who says that many things that Jesus said and did are not in the Bible?
–Well, yes, but…
So, the Bible is not a manual on all knowledge. It just brings us to faith. Are you making the Bible into the fruit of the Tree of Knowledge and “eating” it to be as smart as God?
–Well, I…
Haven’t you committed two sins? First, abusing the Bible and, second, attempting to commit Adam’s sin all over again?
–Well, no, because…
And you would agree that God created the universe and pronounced it good, which makes science a source of truth, wouldn’t you? It’s right there in Genesis.
–Yes, of course, but scientists can be wrong.
So can eminent theologians like yourself, though I am unclear about what theology have to do with sex. As an eminent theologian, you can make mistakes too, unless you are an evangelical pope of sorts.
–Well I’m not infallible, and there is no evangelical pope, so I’m not claiming to be that, either.
So if a person can “prove” with the Bible that the sun rises in the north, we could prove them wrong without using the Bible. We just consult God’s creation, which does not lie to us, by asking an astronomer. Or waiting for sunrise.
–Well, obviously so, but in this case…
You are just a lay person without theological training? Then why are you here? Because once upon a time you were on TV?
–(squirm)
So, then, you are just a religious lay person with an opinion. There are lots of those, and they don’t agree on this topic. I don’t know why you are here. We should probably be talking to the American Psychological Association instead of you.
–uh, I have another appointment.
Now I’d like to introduce our next guest, a leading psychologist who is an expert in human sexuality, and is also a lay member of a Christian church.
Ty
A lot of cynics say that washed up entertainers come out to get their name out there too, but there’s also a small minority of washed up actors who come out homophobic somehow thinking there’ll be a career boost, we have Victoria Jackson, the guy who played Denise’s husband on The Cosby Show (must kill him to know Lisa Bonet was a huge icon to a lot of gay kids in the 80s) and now Kirk Cameron. Have these people forgotten the words Anita Bryant and how her bigotry permanently severed her fanbase?
Alexa
FWIW Tracey Gold, who played Cameron’s sister on Growing Pains, has tweeted her support of the LGBT community and changed her profile pic to a NOH8 one.
Dallas David
It makes no difference what Genesis says. Nobody knows who wrote it, so it’s really nothing more than an anonymous book of unsubstantiated traditions.
The same goes for the rest of the Pentateuch (first 5 books of the Old Testament). Nobody knows who the author is, although authorship is usually ascribed to Moses.
But . . In Genesis 36:31, there’s a mention of “Kings of Israel.”
31 And these are the kings that reigned in the land of Edom, before there reigned any king over the children of Israel.
If the Bible is “Perfect and without error, because it is the product of a Perfect God,” as fundamentalists claim, then how could the author of Genesis mention “Kings of Israel” when there were no Israeli Kings until 500 years later?
No need to haggle on bible details when the veracity of the entire book can be called into question.
Darling Nikki
@Alexa: They mean his real life sister who was the oldest sister in Full House, she’s another one.
prince of snides aka divkid
@califig: wrong.
what he does is to cherry pick passages that suit his agenda from a book that was written, not by god, but by fallible human beings in different hands and countlessly reinterpreted, selectively shaped and edited over fifteen hundred [?] years.
let’s see if this snivelling little coward is brave enough to rock any of these tried and tested old favourites: slaves obey your masters; stoning to death for adultery; stoning to death for breaking the ten commandments… you know the rest (though you probably don’t.)
i hope he advocates stoning his own children to death when they cheek him? after all it’s a COMMANDMENT. FROM GOD! no less.
and why would he not? it’s in the old testament.
whats that, you say, the new testament revoked all that “jew” shit — think again: Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfil them
so, that’s settled then, right? start collecting those rocks to aim at junior!…or not?
see, thats the problem with the damn book — especially since it’s divinely inspired — it’s riddled with the contradictions, inaccuracies, and the petit local vindictive disputes and singular concerns that you’d expect of a tiny ancient agricultural community, with it’s superstitions and ignorance of even most basic tenets of science or human psychology or human fucking decency.
you better hope it’s the work of fallible human minds or you’re fucked. cuz your god is real stoopid. or perhaps has a sick sense of humour. amen.
Alexa
@Darling Nikki: I actually wasn’t replying to anything, I’d just read elsewhere about Tracey Gold’s tweet and thought I’d mention it. I needn’t have bothered, though, Queerty made a post about it right after I made my comment.
Jakey
Such a dope. Marriage is almost as old as dirt, all right–the concept predates all major religions, including his. Christian God wasn’t around that day, but if His disciples are anything to go by, He’s spent all the time since trying to take credit for it. This is as dumb as his saying God designed the banana for man’s consumption…while holding a banana human scientists on Earth engineered to be easier to eat than God’s original version. Cameron needs to come up for air and use something other than the Bible as a history reference. Not that he will anytime soon.
jeffrey
What does his best friend “Boner” think of all this?
ewe
@David Ehrenstein: thank you David. Very good analysis of the British prick.

CNN is notorious for parading around extreme religious fanatics opinions without someone there next to them challenging every disgusting lie coming out of their grotesque minds. Shame on CNN
prince of snides aka divkid
historically, for any faith to survive it has always been necessary to compromise and moderate its message; to have a degree of flexibility to conform to the larger civil society and power structure. crucially, this means being able to not take it ALL so goddamn literally.
but these theofacists are lying fucking hypocrites, pretending that their “unalterable timeless truths” are not every bit as much consciously and deliberately merely their *own take* on a text; and not the unmediated will of god.
ewe
@prince of snides aka divkid: Let me guess that if he was black you would be kinder while attacking us.
Charlie in Charge
I guess he hasn’t read the Old Testament where a large number of men have multiple wives.
Ken
@Dallas David: What Genesis says doesn’t matter to you, but it does matter to Kirk Cameron. We pull a Bugs Bunny and get Elmer Fudd to shoot himself with his own weapon.
Mr. Robertson
@ewe: Yes, that totally is a relevant reply. And you’re totally not being a prick.
Gotta give it to you, though: finding a way to pick a fight about race in a post that has nothing to do with race? Top-notch race-baiting.
ewe
Piers Morgan is taking away american jobs and i wanted that job.
Ken
@Charlie in Charge: In Genesis, God identifies Himself as the God of Isaac, Abraham, and Jacob. Jacob had two wives. God is apparently having a good laugh at the expense of the people who abuse the Bible as an assault weapon, because “Isaac” means “Chuckles.”
We assume that the people who invoke the Bible have read it. They haven’t.
GreatGatsby2011
Do you think even notices the irony of citing Christianity as his evidence that homosexuality is “destructive” while ignoring the fact that the Abrahamic religions (and the division they create) have historically caused far more destruction than homosexuality could ever possibly cause. *shakes head* Crazy fundamentalists, I sometimes wonder if they even listen to the words coming out of their mouth.
Oh, ok.
Interesting how no one brought up the fact that he’s white, hoped that white people experience racism, or started racial commentary in these comments.
He’s saying the same things as that principle yet not nearly as much outrage. He’s not “Douche of the Week” when he’s spreading his hate-filled message to a much larger audience.
Nope, no racism involved here, it’s all fair.
WillBFair
This is a failure of our own leadership. The msm have been using us as a distraction from political and financial corruption for decades. That’ll increase as the campaign continues. Our leaders should have been calling them in this years ago. But again, we’re too obsessed with looks and bodies to recognize and insist on brains and character in our leaders.
Mike in Asheville
@califig: Really, the one thing that God does not approve? Well, in the VERY SAME book of the Old Testament, Leviticus, God says it is an abomination to: eat split-hoof animals [pigs, swine], improper blood drained animals [non-Kosher], fish and creatures of the sea without scales and gils [shrimp, clams, lobsters], clothing materials of two-blends [cotton/silk, wool/polyester, etc]. And in those passages, men who sleep with men as with women. But there is NO PROHIBITION of women sleeping with women.
But, those are Jewish/Mosaic [laws of Moses] to be followed by Jews, Muslims for those portions of the Old Testament or also in the Quaran. And those are the laws that Jesus put to rest with his new Christian faith.
The messenger misspeaks. Christians are followers of the words of Jesus, not Moses and not Paul, but Jesus. And Jesus NEVER spoke about men sleeping with men as with women. But Jesus had plenty to say about divorce, remarriage and adultery — all SINS all the time.
Fool yourself all you want, just as the false prophets of the so-called Christians, all you want. But you will not fool Jesus that you failed his teachings, jumping on the safe bandwagon of bashing the gays while ignoring Jesus’ own teachings about marriage and not divorce, not remarriage and not committing adultery.

up next: israel and palestine.

Ahh, sexy Kirk Cameron. And yes, he is still sexy, even as a homophobe.
@Oh,Ok: You can’t be surprised at this dignified disapproval Kirk is getting. Now, had this been Theo of the Cosby Show making such anti-gay statements…it would be hotter than the fire burning during the Watts Riots in here. And, you are so right about the black pricipal.
CBRad
Maybe it was working on that horrible TV show with that creepy Alan Thicke that made Cameron turn religious fanatic and Boner commit suicide.
toffeestick69
CBRad, without disparaging you, like you chose to do to Alan Thicke & “Boner”, I will say I didn’t appreciate your comment. Alan Thicke can defend himself if he chooses to, but “Boner” Andrew Koenig can’t, because he has in fact left this earth – Wikipedia, Joshua Andrew Koenig – (b)August 17 1968–(d)February 14 2010 was an American character actor, film director, editor, writer, and human rights activist. From 1985 to 1989, Koenig played a recurring role as Richard “Boner” Stabone, best friend to Kirk Cameron’s character Mike Seaver in the first four seasons of the ABC sitcom Growing Pains. He was the son of actor Walter Koenig (Pavel Chekov on Star Trek)and actress Judy Koenig. Personally I thought his was one of the sweetest characters on tv at the time and because of his activism as an adult, obviously I was right. It was very sad to hear that he had retreated into his own world and could not somehow find a way out, we could use more passionate, loving people like him to help further not only “our” cause but mankinds’. Just something for you and others to think about, before you decide to put words to print. As for Kirk Cameron what could you expect from someone who went from the mixed up world of hollywood to the backwards world of TBN as a Televangelist ?
CBRad
@toffeestick69: I didn’t have to think of anything more before putting those words to print. I think Alan Thicke is creepy. And that stupid poorly-written upper-middle-class suburb nothing-of-a-show had especially annoying homophobic innuendo. Feel sorry for Boner, but ….he had to work with Alan Thicke! That would certainly drive me to suicide or religious freakiness.
Ronn
@David Ehrenstein: Thank you thank you for the link David. I can’t quit laughing. Love her!!!
Kieran
I have no problem giving “equal time” to opposing viewpoints, but would Kirk Cameron be given a public platform on CNN if he opposed inter-racial marriages or warned that Jews were going to hell because they don’t accept Jesus?
Isaac C
He’s entitled to his opinion and many agree with him.
“While gay rights activists are eviscerating Kirk Cameron for calling homosexuality “unnatural,” “detrimental,” and “ultimately destructive to so many of the foundations of civilization,” the former “Growing Pains” star has received “thousands of emails and comments” of support, Cameron’s representative told ABCNews.com today.
“Cameron is thankful for the thousands of emails and comments that he’s received from those who value the freedom to express one’s beliefs,” the actor’s rep said in an e-mail statement.”
http://gma.yahoo.com/kirk-cameron-receiving-support-despite-anti-gay-comments-201457339–abc-news.html
CBRad
@Isaac C: Well……as much as I think his ideas are idiotic, he was asked his opinion, and I do feel uncomfortable with the idea of a society where someone can’t express his honest opinion without being too ripped to shreds.
Isaac C
@CBRad: I absolutely agree.
marcussea
How about keeping one’s mouth shut when said comments only serve to stir hate and bigotry. There’s enough already out there.
Clooney rocks.

@Oh, ok.: Kirk Cameron is a dirty honky cracker gringo haole round-eyed white devil breeder goy heretic who should be lynched.
There, are you happy?
