It’s not just us who question the whole “sanctity of marriage” argument when we hear about highly publicized celebrity weddings that 
are soon followed by quickie divorces. Even Reuters is saying Kim Kardashian’s 72-day hitch to Kris Humphries is making her an unintentional “poster girl” for marriage equality.
Kim Kardashian’s mini-marriage became an instant rallying cry among same-sex marriage advocates who pointed out that she was allowed to make a joke of the institution while many gay couples who want lifelong marriages still aren’t allowed to wed.
“Kim Kardashian files for divorce after 72 days. Another example of how same-sex marriage is destroying the sanctity of the very institution,” joked Geoge Takei on Twitter, expressing the sentiment of many.
Tweeted gossip blogger Perez Hilton: “Straight people do a damn well good job themselves of ruining the sanctity of marriage! #MarriageForAll.”
Then again, since Humphries and Kardashian netted somewhere in the ballpark of $18 million for their August wedding—equal to $250,000 for each day they were man and wife—maybe they’re actually helping to take the institution back to its roots as an unromantic exchange of property and goods.

Um, I just have to say this. This has been buggin me a long time. There is something wrong in this country (you remember, the United States of America, where we are supposed to have equal rights for all) when a moron like Kim Kardashian who knew her husband for 5 minutes, can get married and can get divorced in 10 minutes. But my husband and I, who celebrate our 15 year anniversary on November 7, can’t even get married after all these years when we have fought long and hard to build and make a life for ourselves and have committed ourselves to do good for society, children, and others in our society at large. My husband a cardiologist and me a licensed clinical social worker. We see pain and suffering every day adn strive to make the lives of other people better and make their pain a little less and easier to bear. What happened to the words of the Declaration of Independence? : “We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness” I just don’t get people who don’t see the bigotry and injustice in denying LGBT citizens here and around the world the rights, dignity, and respect to which we and they are entitled. To again, quote a congressman I admire, “How many gay people does God have to make before we realize, He wants us around??” Wake up people fighting us, because we will never, ever stop fighting for the complete and equal rights that we deserve…and I dream of a day when a child won’t be beaten, killed, or throw themselves off the George Washington fucking Bridge because idiotic, archaic, bigoted morons send the message to these children that their lives are less worthy than someone else’s. Those days are going to be soon over. And shame on those who think otherwise. Happy Halloween and a brighter future for our young LGBT brothers and sisters.

And those of us who have been with our partners for years and decades are denied equal right which are supposed to be guaranteed under our constitution. @michael: I agree. I’m all for equal marriage rights, but it’s not Kim’s fault most states still don’t allow gay marriage. In fact, she has said she supports the right of gay people to marry. Be mad at the people in Congress and state legislatures who vote against marriage equality and not Kim. If she had never gotten married or stayed marriage, we still wouldn’t have equal marriage right so this whole topic is stupid.
