“Imagine the impact that the rampant spread of STDs, including HIV would have on the military? How will the military handle the spread of these diseases in the barracks? How will the military handle sodomy in battlefield situations? Imagine the impact that sexual favoritism would have in subverting military cohesion? A homosexual Sergeant who was in love with a member of his company, could protect his lover from battle – or send a straight soldier into harm’s way just to punish him for having the wrong attitudes about homosexuality. Straight soldiers could be denied promotion by militant gay officers. The military chain of command would be undermined. … In addition to the coming persecution of straight soldiers, what about the unrestrained drug and sex antics committed by young male homosexuals? Homosexual sex is consistently related to drug use, including crystal meth and other sexually-stimulating drugs. What sort of chaos will be caused in the military by bare-backing parties and other forms of homosexual orgies?” —Traditional Values Coalition’s Louis Sheldon and Andrea Lafferty on the harm repealing DADT will inflict [via Good As You]

Oh give me a break. What nonsense.
1) Drug use will remain prohibited.
2) The military will be able to police sexual activity while on duty and in the barracks.
3) If he thinks “young homosexual men” are the only ones mixing drug use and unsafe sexual practices, I have some old friends from high school and college (and hell, law school for that matter) to introduce him to.
4) There are so many ridiculous problems with the other assertions that I don’t know where to begin.
what a recruiting, the military- now with orgies.
@rogue dandelion: You should hear some of the stories coming out of Blackwater from visiting expatriates.
Hrmmm, good point about all that bareback sex in the field. Maybe the end of DADT should include a policy requiring a strict abstinence only sex ed program for all servicemen topped off with purity pledges.
I have met (and known, in the biblical sense) a number of military men at orgies. The Marines are my favorites.
I remember reading in a straight publication that the phrase in the Army used to be “It’s not who you know, it’s who you blow that counts.” The military (especially Navy!) has always been a hotbed of gayness. Remember Churchill’s comment that the British Navy was run by “rum, sodomy and the lash”? Nothing new here.
@hardmannyc: But don’t tell that to Lou Sheldon. No, the military’s full of “godly men” who will be corrupted by “teh gay” if we were allowed to openly serve! Never mind that the military has had plenty of its own hetero sex scandals. Or as you’ve said, it’s not like a uniform “cures teh gay away”.
Oh jeez, I just hope this utter pile of nonsense doesn’t scare Obama & the Congressional Dems from scrapping DADT.
Mean is one thing. Nuts is another. But mean plus nuts?
Not a good thing.
Since I was taken, as a civilian, to a certain Army outpost by a certain member of the Armed Forces that I met in a DC gay club (this was in the late 80’s) and we had sex, methinks Sheldon is RATHER late on this.
oh…just when I think the bigots have learned to hide their true ignorance and hate…I read something like this…i don’t know whether to cry out from sadness or anger.
I think I am like millions of gay men that have never used illegal drugs, and since I grew up in the age of HIV, don’t bareback, let alone ‘barebacking parties’ good grief. hell I’ve never even had a threesome.
Oh, btw..was Tailhook a gay Navy sex scandal? I can’t remember…
But straight male soldiers would NEVER rape female soldiers. HA.
BTW, except for the HIV/STD part..the rest of their fears…come directly out of the “twist ending” of the 1960’s gay film “the gay deceivers” about straight guys pretending to be gay to avoid the draft.
What a refreshing way to start my afternoon – with all this sage wisdom presented by the Traditional Values Coalition.
I think I just threw up in my mouth a little bit.
Okay, a lot.
I’ve had sex on an Air Force base…. the one I was born on in fact! This was in the middle of the 90’s when we had these things called condoms. I wasn’t in the service but what fun service men are! On another note… Are they worried about women getting STDs or even pregnant? They have women in the service and the world didn’t end! Grow up small minded bigots, you must think that if you give equal rights, no one will be left to suck your dick in airport bathrooms?
You have got to be kidding me.. are these people serious? Holy Crap.
@Matthew: I think they’d probably be opposed to women participating, as well. Perhaps unsurprisingly, DADT has a disproportionate impact on women.
@HomoWithNoJob: Yes, they’re serious. God help us all.
It’s amazing how many women are leading the fight for gay hate….they’re becoming the majority on homophobia lately…why is that??
I’m surprised they didn’t metion the lesbian scissoring orgies that would undoubtedly take place. And the impending shortage of gun lubricant as we sex-starved, insatible fags divert it to other clandestine purposes.
Oh, and if we let the gays serve openly, the TERRORISTS WIN.
HIV isn’t a bar to continued military service now, though STD’s have always been a problematic presence in uniformed military service through the ages. And, same-gender sexual relations have always occurred among military personnel – recognizing of course, that gays have always been prominent military warriors.
Read up on the Sacred Band of Thebes before casting aspersions on gays in the military. Gay soldiers are presently discriminated against by ignorant hetero supervisors.
Who says drug use is a component of gay sex? Perhaps only by closeted straight boys who want to feel like submissive anal sex is like!
I certainly engaged in consensual sex in the barracks, but unfortunately didn’t know of any widespread “bareback parties and other forms of homosexual orgies.”
God, I love it! Causing absolute terror in the empty minda of so many ignorant conservative authoritarian religious Republican rubes.
Clark AFB in the Phillipines had twice weekly “Clap Call” at the base hospital. Anyone who had symptoms of VD would line up and take their turn to be seen.
Lines would sometimes stretch for blocks, all from heterosexuals spending time with Phillipino hookers. The American military (and taxpayers) adapted to that ongoing problem, and will adapt to any future problems.
These Pharasees are dreaming if they think the only people with medical problems will be gays.
