1980, I loved the B-52s. My friend Bill was a townie from Athens GA and he had gone to high school with Cindy Wilson. He didn’t know the late Rickey, he thought Rickey must be her little brother (he did look younger). We went to UCLA to see them and they came out on stage lined up just like on their first album cover (the second had just come out) and they played every song in order, then added some from the second album. Before “52 Girls” Cindy dedicated it to “Bill from Athens”. Afterwards we went back stage. Somebody was having a Birthday party. I was in Heaven. Thanks for the memories.

I went to school at the University of Georgia from 1976 -1978. And the Bs were the college town fave local band. They loved going out and we would all hang out at the local disco. I took an internship at the Athen Banner Herald (journalism major) and worked one summer with Kate in the production department. They even came to my birthday party one year after a local performance wearing the same outfit; matching t-shirt, shorts and tights and passed a purple Afro wig to each other all night; acting like “the same person”. I graduated; the first album came out; they were a cult sensation. I saw them a year later in a small venue in Houston; and went back stage after the show. Kate was telling stories about all our old friends back in Athens; the fame never affected the warm, wonderful people they still are. Thanks for the video; I feel 30 years younger today! YIKES…
