While we eagerly await the release of Drive next week, thereâs plenty of gay home entertainment to keep us busy. Itâs gay versus straight soccer lads in UK import Kickoff (above), comedy with a heart (and lesson) in The Love Patient, life lessons and coming of age in Toast, and a chunky gay teen and his troublemaker BFF hitting the road in Dirty Girl. When it rains it pours, you know?
Toast
($27.99 DVD, Image)
Based on a memoir of openly gay UK foodie Nigel Slater, Toast sees a teenage would-be chef (Freddie Highmore) develop his first stirrings for haute cuisineâand other guysâin post-war England. Helena Bonham Carter is an arch delight as Nigelâs wicked stepmother, who finds him more a nuisance than a prodigy.
Abrupt Decision
($19.95 DVD, Water Bearer Films)
In scrappy queer filmmaker Paul Brightâs fifth feature, middle-aged gay professional Denis (Steve Callahan) gets laid off, his relationship hits some rocks, and his mom has a stroke. What to do? Become obsessed with rescuing stray pups, of course! Works for us every time.
Over The Edge
($17.99 DVD, TLA Releasing)
Thereâs a killer on the loose and med-school dropout Jason (Danny Bedford), prone to blackouts, fears he may be the one responsible! Thankfully, Jason has a hot gay co-worker, Richard (Sean Hart), to help him investigate. This match-up is more absurdâand outright queerâthan Guy Ritchieâs Sherlock Holmes and Watson.
How about we take this to the next level?
Our newsletter is like a refreshing cocktail (or mocktail) of LGBTQ+ entertainment and pop culture, served up with a side of eye-candy.
KickOff
($24.99 DVD, Wolfe Releasing)
UK writer-director-actor Rikki Beadle-Blair (Metrosexuality) brings us this tale of a gay soccer team that comes up against some butch, straight rivals. Invictus this is not, but there are plenty of twists, turns, sass and shirtless multiethnic lads, plus bonus features including behind-the-scenes, a music video, and cast workout clips. Score!
Dirty Girl
($29.99 DVD, Anchor Bay)
This flashback comedy sees Danielle (Juno Temple), a rabble-rousing Oklahoma teen whoâs no damn good, drag her chubby gay best bud, Clarke (Jeremy Dozier), on a cross-country road trip to find her birth fatherâand lose his virginity. A veteran supporting castâMary Steenbergen! William H. Macy! Mila Jovovovich! Tim McGraw(!?!)âhelp make this a winner. Make it a double feature with Todd Stephensâ fag-and-hag road trip flick, Gypsy 83.
The Love Patient
($24.99, TLA Releasing)
In this quirky gay rom-com, hot ad exec Paul schemes to win back his ex-boyfriend by pretending he has cancer. (Good plan!) But heâs soon deluged with concerned family members, physicians and holistic flakes who make his life miserable. From the maker of Gay Zombie (if that tells you anything), Patient imparts an important lesson: If you want sympathy from an ex, just pretend you have the flu or food poisoning.
Romeos
($24.99 DVD, Strand Releasing)
Puberty hits German cutie Lukas (Rick Okon) lateâbecause heâs an FTM and the testosterone injections have finally kicked in. And while navigating Cologneâs famed gay scene, Lukas falls for strapping hottie Fabio (Maximilian Befort) in this sweet love story with a twist.
ALSO OUT ON DVD:
Abduction (Lionsgate)
Belle du Jour (Criterion Collection)
The Ides of March (Sony Pictures)
The Josephine Baker Story (HBO)
Killing Bono (Paramount Pictures)

Toast is great, was on TV over here late last year, Kickoff is a pile of shite! Dirty Girl looks like it could be a laugh!
tallskin2
yeah, “toast” is fun – nothing great, but quirky and fun. But it’s not worth the money they are charging for the DVD !!

I lol’ed at your listing of abduction after all the gay films listed, was that on purpose?
