If you are a gay man living in the United States, here’s a reason to count your blessings today: you probably have access to HIV medications if you need them, whether PrEP for prevention or treatment for infection. In the global scheme of things, that makes you an enormously privileged person.
In his striking – and humbling – new video from AIDS2016 in South Africa, gay blogger Mark S. King takes you inside a massive protest through the streets of Durban, and what he sees might change the way you look at your own life. He also introduces us to advocates, gay and not, who took to the streets to demand that HIV treatment is made available to people in Africa and around the world who need it.
Meanwhile, in a bonus video report, Mark chats with PrEP advocate Jim Pickett from the Chicago AIDS Foundation about why Jim believes the international gathering should now be known as “the PrEP conference.” Jim also has some very choice words for an agency that is trying very hard to block a California bill that would provide education about PrEP to those who need it.
Coming up in Mark’s coverage this week are the activists fighting HIV criminalization, the Global Village, and a candid look at exactly how cruisy the conference really is, with all those healthy gay advocates sharing the city together.

PreP is going to make more people HIV+, and just create new strains of HIV that are resistant to PreP/Truvada. I know HIV+ people who when it comes to actually paying for their meds have to make the decision whether to pay for meds that month, or buy food, pay rent, etc. and this is with assistance from programs both federal and state.

@ErikO: I’m not exactly pro PreP myself. However, you need to show some statistics where this is an actual problem. As of right now it isn’t.

I was diagnosed with HIV this year, and for some reason my mind was ready for that answer since I had been showing strange signs since January of this year. Both my love were there with me when I got the news and we are both very supportive, and I am truly thankful for that. I told my closest friends, one of them being the girl I really like, and she has been supporting me since I started this whole process and has always given me support. So far no one has turned their back on me due to ignorance or anything like that. I am thankful that I have not fallen into a depression or anything like that. On Monday August I get my result for CD4 (T-cell) count and virus load count, and I am hoping I have a high level of T-cells. The last thing I have lost is hope and that was what lead me to Dr Odia of ( [email protected] ) Who helped me with herbal herbs medicine to get me cured of this disease, and I would like to let others know that even though sometimes we might feel the world is going to come down on us, there will always be someone we can count on, who will support us and love us. I am not in a support group at the moment but I would love to be in one, meet others and share with them my testimony. This is not the end of the world; this is not a reason to give up on our hopes and dreams. We are in control, not the disease. Contact him:( [email protected] ) as I am right now, I am grateful.
