The DADT Debate Actually Does Sound Like Ke$ha’s ‘Blah Blah Blah’

One thing is clear about Lady Gaga dance routine creators: The most viral among them are U.S. soldiers. Enter Team Ke$ha, straight from Afghanistan.

Writes the video’s creator Codey Wilson of “his elite step team of volunteers: “The video is an EXAGGERATED act of a possible future military that is open to any sexual preference. Don’t give us a hard time for this, please? We’re just a few good guys trying to enjoy ourselves and get this deployment over with. No one is gay… that we know of. Not that there is anything wrong with that! (political correctness) I am NOT saying it IS ok to be gay in the military. I am not saying it’s NOT OK.”

But it is perfectly okay to enlist your comrades in a little Flip video action. We particularly enjoy the nighttime scenes, lit with flashlights; we all know this is when real naughtiness between closeted soldiers goes down.

So much for Obama’s and Gates’s insistence that the repeal of DADT needs to be studied for months on end! The straight soldiers obviously don’t have any problem whatsoever, and they understand full well all of the ridiculous gay stereotypes. I believe they’re not mocking gay soldiers; they’re sending up all the usual canards–and, it seems, with more than a little affection. Of course, I know that many gays with no sense of humor will find the video offensive rather than funny and even a little cute. (By the way, the bear community will L-O-V-E many of the performers.)

  • Scott

Now let’s see the same thing regarding “women on submarines”, men with no self control humping women.

  • Jack

@Scott: Um, let’s not. Maybe you are on the wrong blog, Scott?

  • Jason

    This was awesome!!!!

  • Chris

    @Jack LOL

  • Scotty

OMG! These guys are HOT HOT HOTTIES!!

  • Mr. Enemabag Jones

We’re just a few good guys trying to enjoy ourselves and get this deployment over with.

Doesn’t that describe pretty much every soldier, including the gay ones–PC or not?

  • Jeremy

Whoever in the military had these ideas and successfully convinced his buddies to do the videos need a medal for being so cool!

  • Hilarious

Why is it every time a straight attractive white guy mocks us it’s a-ok?

Sometimes you have to be able to recognize when someone is laughing with you and when someone is laughing at you.

It’s pretty clear this video is laughing at us unlike the Gaga video.

If it helps to end your swooning pretend they’re all Isaiah Washington calling you a fag.

This ridiculous double-standard needs to end.

  • alan brickman

they get to do this video because they are willing to fight…and you just bitch and whine….

  • Mr. Enemabag Jones

they get to do this video because they are willing to fight

Without the fear of being kicked out for being gay.

  • Mr. Enemabag Jones

And for anyone who thinks that Codey Wilson IS NOT making fun of gays in the military, just read what he wrote to the website Gawker:

Hey, I never said it was ok to be gay. I also never said it wasn’t ok. I understand you have a web site to run and this could be a real controversial topic by saying that “codey says It’s ok,” but please don’t bring this negativity towards me. I never said it was ok. The beginning of the video is a guy reading the paper in shock that is has finally happened, then the dancing which is an exaggerated view and joke of it. I do understand your job but please please don’t make me look bad. I know this is pathetic but you have no idea what will happen to me by claiming that I support that. Thank you for considering this. Thank you also for considering the video on your home page. The title is wrong, but I appreciate the publicity. Thanks

He and his friends are laughing at gay soldiers. Most of whom are actually fighting, not making stupid parody videos.

  • Rob Moore

This is a stupid insult. I don’t give a hairy rat’s ass that these are soldiers in Iraq or that some of them are physically attractive. The whole video is meant to make us into stereotyped butts of a joke. Codey Wilson needs to actually imagine how this would be received if he had switched it around and made it about Jews, women, blacks, Arabs, etc. Does he think he should get a free pass for being creating such a piece of insulting video?

  • Jon

They are just poking fun at DADT and it’s repeal. I think they just did it for the LOL’s not for the politics. I’m glad they find it a stress release.

  • Ricky

    If we can’t laugh at ourselves… well… yea…

That said, the video could land the guys who made into a heap of trouble. The fact that it has gone viral will draw some unwanted attention, and while I found it to be entertaining, the uniform military code may have an alternate view. It can all be tossed up as fun but they coulda at least been smart enough to not do the “re-enactment” in their uniforms.

  • Hilarious

Would you laugh at blackface too? That is what this is. Gay caricatures.

They’re laughing AT US, get it through your skull.

The moron who created this video is begging people to stop saying he’s in favor of ending DADT. He doesn’t think it’s ok to be gay in the military.

Even if all of you refuse to read the things he’s writing at the very least take a good hard look at all of the feminine actions they threw in the video to have a good hard laugh at fags and how womanly we are.

This is one of those times I’m embarrassed to be gay. There are actually gay soldiers defending this video, gay men defending it on Queerty, and STRAIGHT people actually standing up for us saying this shitty video is not ok.

Are you guys serious? Straight people realize we’re being mocked before us? Really?

  • Ricky

@Hilarious: Fine. They are laughing at us. So what? This is no more harmful than that “Another Gay Movie” series, y’know the film that lampoons every. single. gay syereotype there is. Y’know what? I laughed my [email protected]@ off at those movie. I did not with this, I just found it mildly entertaining. (the Lady Gaga video I saw… possibly by the same group… not sure… is way better and much more entertaining)
So they are mocking us? Big deal. If we CANNOT take a joke then we are a pathetic bunch. Is our collective skin really THAT thin that this would actually hurt it. This is no different than some of the entertainment we’ve drummed up within our on community. (Even if queers like us had a hand in it, it really is no different when we do it to ourselves: to me it is like the word ‘fag’ which is offensive if a straight uses it but if a fellow gay uses it, it is seen as acceptable because it is ‘within our house’.)
And in answer to your question about laughing at “black face”, I didn’t think I ever would but then along came Robert Downey Jr. in a little offensive comedy: “Tropic Thunder”.
In closing: is the video offensive? absolutely. Do I care? Not particularly. I have more important issues in my sights than some video from a guy that “may or may not” think being gay is ok.

  • villager

How do you know he’s straight? Wouldn’t that be the ultimate zinger? Closeted gay dude convinces straight guys to do this?

  • Hilarious

@Ricky: So on the one hand we’re crying bloody murder over DADT and on the other we’re saying they’re right and this mockery will happen?

Because that’s the point of this little video. To them without DADT we’ll make a mockery of the military so they chose to make a mockery of us.

What aren’t you getting? It’s not about being able to laugh at yourself.

It’s about not being so stupid you can’t see the bigger picture.

Watch the first few seconds of the video. Listen to the words. The point of this video is laid out for you plain as day.

You wanna talk about gay issues and people who are dangerous to us? Well the fuck is this?

These are the pricks who make it hard for gay soldiers. These are the assholes who beat the shit out of us and make gay panic claims to get off without charges.

Stop defending this bullshit and stop making an ass of yourself, me, and our entire community just so you can swoon over a piece of homophobic tail.

Christ, what exactly is funny about this video? The fact that they think we’re disgusting freaks or the fact that they think we’re girly? Where’s the humor exactly?

  • k6tmk6

Bravo. It’s great that they have the sense of humor to do this without being offensive to us LGBT’ers. While I’m sure the Republicans in Congress are going to have a fit if they see this video, to take this spoof seriously is akin to taking the Onion as gospel.

  • delurker again

@Hilarious: Because your average queerty commenter wants to get fucked by these guys because they are probably their preference type and wish they could be like them. Duh.

  • Ricky

@Hilarious: conversly, stop being such a ninny and making a fool of your self.

  • Ricky

and actually, I find zero of the men in the video attractive. Perhaps I just have thicker skin than is expected of me.

  • Hilarious

@Ricky: Call it what you want. When some jackass makes a video mocking gays in the military the gay man praising it seems like the one making a fool of himself to me.

This is basically calling all the gay men forced to hide their sexuality under DADT fags and you think it’s funny. But I’m the fool? No, that’s you.

  • Rob Moore

@alan brickman: This is such a bullshit point of view. Just because a lot of white soldiers fought in WW2 wouldn’t make it alright for them to make offensive videos about nonwhites. Because a lot of male soldiers fought in Vietnam wouldn’t make it alright for them to make videos making fun of women in military.

So because these men volunteer for the military they have special permission to be assholes?
