WATCH: Mayor Bloomberg’s Sign-Language Interpreter Giving You Hurricane Sandy Realness

While Hurricane Sandy ravaged New York City, leaving millions without power and at least 10 dead, there’s one extremely emotive face New Yorker’s can turn to for a smile: Lydia Callis, Mayor Michael Bloomberg’s fast-as-lightning sign-language interpreter.

Twitter was all aflutter with users extolling Ms. Callis’ “swag” and “style.”  One tweeter asked if there was a Lydia Callis fan page, and within seconds the Internet emitted something even better: A Lydia Callis’ Face for NYC Mayor Tumblr page, which offers a convincing case for her election.

    That’s the thing hearing people never get; how much facial expressions and physicality go into signing to convey emotion. The signs for “big” “large” or “huge” are the same sign, but what differentiates the words is how much of your body you put into making the sign.
