Tonight the Democrats kick off the 2020 Democratic National Convention. Among the evening’s speakers are Forever First Lady Michelle Obama, Sen. Bernie Sanders, Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer, New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo, and former Ohio governor and GOP presidential candidate John Kasich, just to name a few.
The convention, which will happen virtually, begins in just a few hours and is sure to offer more than a few memorable moments. Although no Democratic National Convention will ever be as memorable as the one in 1996, when everyone, most notably First Lady Hillary Clinton, danced the “Macarena.”
That year, the song was #1 on the Billboard charts, selling over 11 million copies. Democrats, in a bid to keep people entertained while simultaneously appealing to younger voters, decided to incorporate the accompanying dance into their convention.
As we all know, Bill Clinton went on to win that election, and people still remember the video of everyone dancing today, for better or worse, so we’d say it had its desired effect.
Relive the magic of the moment below. (Shout out to the guy with the rainbow flag!)
