i second mark’s sentiments. america was founded on the principles of inequality and white male supremacy, and in over 200 years there’s still institutional racism, sexism, homophobia, massive economic inequality, more people in prison than any country in the world, and superpower status as a global military and economic bully. not exactly something to be proud of!

There have been many injustices committed in the past yes and the greatness of the people of this country have allow for them to be corrected, in no other nation that would’ve been possible. The ideals of the Founders didn’t correspond to realities, many of which later changed.
My Irish family struggled against intense prejudice, not that long ago.
Many things have gotten better re; human rights, others have gotten worse.
The scary things going on now are distinctly contrary to the Constitution or anything proscribed for the basic continuance of a democracy. Now the military industrial complex has undermined everything else, along with the freakish Religious right.

If there’s one thing I hate, it’s excessive cynicism and I’ve noticed that a lot of you common commenters are pretty cynical and skeptical about a lot of things, which, to be frank, is a sometimes necessary way to approach things, but done excessively only reduces the symbol and meaning of almost everything to something selfish or lack-luster. Are you people ever happy? I wonder.
Without sounding like I’m Dixie born and raised, I will say that I love America and that I’m still very proud of her. We’ve done some stupid things and modernization and materialism and the millennium boom have institionalized a kind of apathy and denial at the same time about government and awareness. But at the same time, we’re still America– land of playboy, binge drinking and out of control drag queens. If you’ve ever lived somewhere else, you’ll realize that there truly is nowhere like home; nowhere like here.
I love this place and I’m so grateful that even though we’re not perfect, we’re often times attempting to fight the wrongs of an inherently marginalizing and discriminatory world. The goodness lies in the attempt. Thank God for America and the remarkable, diverse and fabulous people who live here.
