Daraprim is not an “AIDS Drug”. The price hike was unconscionable but trying to create a misleading dialogue as to the drugs purpose is not much better. Daraprim treats malaria and a parasitic infection, the latter of which may be fatal to people with weakened or compromised immune systems.

I would have bought the patent got my money out of it and donated it to a trusted HIV/AIDS foundation. Sell them for a dime each. Without question he is a sociopath. No one with a soul could live with themselves. I would imagine if my husband got AIDs and how I would feel if there was a drug out there and I couldn’t afford it. Like that parasite infection might not be deadly to a normal healthy guy, but kill someone who has a compromised auto immune system. the term is AIDS RELATED. @tusgold: So it’s 2015 and you may want to avoid referring to HIV- persons as “normal” men. Just saying.
Compromised or weak immune systems are not limited to just people who are HIV+ or have developed AIDS. The very young and the very old can also experience fatal conditions that would be shrugged off by a healthy, fully-functional immune system. Someone with SCID or a temporary immune deficiency (Such as someone undergoing chemotherapy) may also experience more severe or possibly fatal conditions.
This is as much an “AIDS Drug” as tylenol is… in that someone with AIDS may happen to take the drug to treat a condition. By that logic any drug is an AIDS Related drug.
It’s a ridiculous spin on an already horrific story, and anyone who spends even a cursory amount of time reading about the actual usage of Daraprim (like say, a journalist preparing the story) would know better than to try to frame their argument in such a manner.
