Who would have thunk Iowa would be the next state to tackle same sex marriage?

The lower court declared the opposite-sexes-only marriage statute unconstitutional. The state appeal is to overturn that ruling, to prevent same-sex couples from getting married. We win only if the lower-court ruling is upheld. They could have upheld it by just refusing the appeal.

Of course, if they uphold the lower ruling, it will have binding effect statewide. Or they could overturn it, and have binding effect statewide.

Um, Chrissy Gephardt is from Missouri.

But, as Meredith Willson wrote about his musical about Iowa, “There’s nothing halfway about the Iowa way to treat you …” Doesn’t surprise me a bit that Iowa is one of the first states to provide a ruling. And, unlike in San Francisco, the one couple who was able to get married before the ruling was stayed was able to stay married — the marriage wasn’t nullified by the stay. Does anyone know how that couple is doing?

I think it might help a little that those two Iowa college students ran and out and got married by that Unitarian minister on his front lawn. I mean it puts a human face on this and no one can argue that it is just an abstract issue and that no real human being rights are being denied. Who knows, maybe that will help.
