First Mario and Link, now this.
In the upcoming release of How To Train Your Dragon 2, the Craig Ferguson-voiced character Gobber the Belch will come out as gay.
It’s definitely a first for an animated feature aimed at kids, and sure to send the inaccurately named One Million Moms into a tailspin.
Writer-director Dean DeBlois says that while Gobber won’t exactly say the words “I’m gay,” the nod towards his sexuality won’t be entirely subtle, and will happen while the character reacts to watching a husband and wife argue.
How about we take this to the next level?
Our newsletter is like a refreshing cocktail (or mocktail) of LGBTQ+ entertainment and pop culture, served up with a side of eye-candy.
Speaking to E! News at the Cannes Film Festival recently, DeBlois said:
“When we were recording Craig Ferguson, I had written the line, ‘This is why I never got married,” and he, as he often does, added it as an ad lib and he said, ‘Yup, Gobber is coming out of the closet.’ I think that’s a really fun [and] daring move to put in. I love the idea that Gobber is Berk’s resident gay.”
Could there be a possible love interest for Gobber in the next installment of the franchise?

I love this. HTTYD was a wonderful movie and the sequel looks to be entertaining as well. Even though it is an animated movie, the most childish aspect of this picture will be the way the adults will act concerning this character’s sexuality. Kids need to take notes on how not to act when the bullsh*t starts.

Not the first time. There’s an openly gay character in Paranorman.

Based on some pretty subtle subtext in the first movie I actually already guessed the character was gay… but I guess it only counts if it’s blatant.

@Nuttypea: How so? What subtext?

Mitch, the jock in Paranorman, came out at the end of the movie,so this is not the first time in a kid’s animated feature.
