Need to Convince Someone Gay Marriage Doesn’t Affect the Church?

If there’s anything Queerty loves, it’s myth-busting. It seems to be a growth industry, given the misinformation and lies spread by conservatives who want to scare voters (who will scare legislators) into thinking marriage equality will take away their religious freedoms. You know, even though the First Amendment isn’t going anywhere. Appreciate, then, New York’s Empire State Pride Agenda’s video that dispels the ridiculous claims religious institutions will in any way be affected by legalized same-sex marriage. It joins a roster of excellent debunking that includes folks like Rob Tisinai.

Information will not change the underlying reason why people want to believe the lie. Namely, that they are bigots. I wish this were a matter of education, but again, from my experience in other areas of my life, I know that often what’s factually true does not matter with regard to what people want to believe. What the lie offers them is a convenient out to cite when they know on some level is a lie. I remember reading some woman claiming she supported gays and gay rights but voted for Prop 8 because she did not want gay marriage taught in schools. This is a white middle class woman who is a teacher. She had multiple opportunities to know that her statement was a lie, and yet, she choose to believe the lie.

California Council of Churches http://www.calchurches.org was one of the Amicus filers to overturn Prop 8. This is a good piece, but I would like to see some information on the Churches who do perform same-sex marriages.

@Katie:
I know the United Church of Canada does, as well as some others:

And there is a schism in the Anglican church over the issue. Diocese in Ottawa and B.C. nave performed SSM:

Well done! Information like this is needed to help fight against the constant lies from certain groups.

I just keep on pointing to the fact that Canada has had SSM for a few years now and the sky has not fallen, there are kids being forced to go to “gay” camps, and churches still are practicing their faith as they see fit. We still have many people that disagree, but that is what a democracy is all about.

@Michael vdB: Geeeeeze, the only reason Canada’s sky hasn’t fallen is that it is propped up by such wonderfully righteous people down here praying for them! …Ok, better pull my tongue out of my cheek before I bite it.

They don’t care if they infringe on the rights of pro-gay marriage churches and synagogues. Only their narrow views should be protected, in their peanut-sized brains.
