Christian Coalition founder Pat Robertson came out for Rudy Giuliani today. Speaking at the National Press Club, religious righter Robertson said Giuliani’s the best Republican candidate. Washington Post‘s Chris Cillizza gets down with the nitty-gritty:
Robertson’s support was coveted by several of the leading Republican candidates and provides Giuliani with a major boost as the former New York City mayor seeks to convince social conservatives that, despite his positions supporting abortion rights and marriage for gay couples, he is an acceptable choice as the GOP nominee.
…
“I thought it was important for me to make it clear that Rudy Giuliani is more than acceptable to people of faith,” said Robertson. “Given the fractured nature of the process, I thought it was time to solidify around one candidate.”He insisted that while some on the “fringe” of the social conservative movement may see Giuliani as an unacceptable nominee, the “core know better.”
Mitt Romney’s campaign staffers just shat themselves.
Rt. Rev. Dr. RES
Rudolph Guiliani – cafeteria Catholic – who gets special canonical permission to marry a cousin – and then divorces against church canons if remarries – remarries twice – lives with gay couple between divorces – pragmatically liberal or neoconservative on purely politically cynical grounds – has promised Christofascists Robertson and Dobson and a host of other lesser ayatollahs that he will be more loyal to theocracy than their true believers because he has all to prove.
Betray his friends? What friends? What allies?

Der Gubernator, Schwarzenegger, the guy who windes and dines Austrian neo-Nazis can’t run.
So Robertson had to pick one of his two favorites, Rudy Giuliani or Hillary Clinton, about whom he said “Well she’s– tacking to the right as hard as she can tack. And– you know Hillary’s got some good points.”
I suppose he flipped a coin.

The main reason for Robertson’s support of Guiliani is that he is the most electable of all the Republicans. While they may disagree on some issues, it’s better than having someone who disagrees on them all. Guiliani is also a staunch anti-Islamofascist, which appeals greatly to the Christian Right. And, he’s got my vote!
