It’s hard enough keeping up with America reality stars, even when they manage to stand out by killing themselves after killing their wives. So how are we supposed to care about British fameseekers? One way: Come out as bisexual.
Okay, Danyl Johnson, you have our attention. You sleep with men and women. How lovely for you. This will be great news for the millions who watch you on X Factor each week–and expect you to win–and in no way makes us think you’re just trying to follow in Adam Lambert’s loafer steps.
Unlike American Idol‘s Lambert, Johnson then proceeded to hit on his judges — which a smart strategy, given he failed to make it through auditions three years ago.

Oh right, because any non-straight reality show contestant must now be following in Adam’s footsteps, even if they’re in another country and nothing like him. And people wonder why Adam fans now have just as bad a reputation as the Claymates do.

This may come as a surprise to Queerty, but the British public has been able to support openly gay, lesbian or bi people in these singing competitions long before Adam Lambert appeared on the landscape. Apart from Will Young, the original Idol, whose sexuality was an open secret, around the same time (2003) the British public were happily voting for an open lesbian on the BBC version of Idol, Fame Academy. I have no idea if Danyl Johnson even knows who Adam Lambert is, but Lambert is hardly a trailblazer for sexuality in British pop.

You should be ashamed to use the F-word.
But then, we already know that shame is not in Queerty’s vocabulary.
Steff
I don’t think he even knows who Adam Lambert is, to be fair.

The tone of this piece comes across as unnecessarily snotty and unpleasant. The sneering ‘how lovely for you’; the notion that he’s being bi because it’s fashionable in a post-Adam world; and the petty need to point out that he auditioned and failed in the past and should therefore use his looks this time. It reads like bi-phobia. Bisexuals are queer too, Queerty. Be better than this, please.
strictmachine
why the snotty tone of the article. are we meant to be looking down on him because he’s OPENLY BI???? would you actually prefer in in the closet. to be out as queer as a teacher is also quite a brave step in my opinion.
i agree with darrien, britain has no problem voting for a queer singer and yes, alexs parks was out as a lesbian when she won fame academy.
also, in britain american idol is not on network tv as far as im aware so we really arent fussed about adam lambert.

Any UK talent show participant knows American Idol very well – look how many winners have hits in the UK. For sure he knows Adam Lambert.
Agree with above posters – why so snooty?
Unlike Lambert, Danyl is 100% open about his sexuality at the very START of the contest.
UK does NOT need to follow the US on LBGT trends – it’s the other way round mostly.
Listen/see/watch his performance Queerty.

It’s refreshing to see and out and proud male bisexual for a change. I’ve been saying for a while now that gay men can be easily confined, and thus the “gay male” label suits perfectly the needs of homophobes who want to see male-male sexuality confined and out of the mainstream.
In contrast, “bisexual male” cannot be confined. Through male bisexuality, male-male sexuality is mainstreamed as part of the package that mingles with the heterosexual mainstream. It’s the nightmare of homophobes.
Take-home message is this: bisexual men can’t be confined in the way that gay men can be. Thus, male-male sexuality as expressed through the bisexual male cannot be confined in the way that male-male sexuality through the gay male is.

Homophobes fear the male bisexual identity more than they do the male homosexual identity.

This boy’s got talent, major talent…he OWNED that stage, completely owned it, and belted it out big time…and he’s about 100x hotter (to me) than Liza Minel… I mean, Adam Lambert.
Hope homo-or-Bi-phobia doesn’t screw him out of the win in the U.K. as the contest progresses.
