Actors we love star in films that critics didn’t necessarily like — but hey, what do they know? — hitting home video this week.
Tina Fey and Paul Rudd star in rom-com Admission, while James Franco plays a cray-cray sleaze in the ribald Spring Breakers. Up-and-comer-we-love Saoirse Ronan, meanwhile, stars in Stephenie Meyer’s sci-fi flick, The Host.
Finally, a cast of unknowns head up New Zealand arthouse coming-of-ager, Boy.

How do you follow up the Twilight saga? A profound sense of relief? Not director Andrew Niccol, tasked with bringing author Stephenie Meyer’s sci-fi book about a future where aliens have almost entirely taken over the human race. Enter Melanie, one of the few survivors, who most fight for the future and hottie love (of course) while sharing her body with a pesky alien consciousness. Extras include three minutes’ worth of deleted scenes, a brief behind the scenes, and an audio commentary.

Tina Fey works some rom-com realness as a Princeton University admissions officer who connects with an alternative school teacher (Paul Rudd) and a favorite student who may actually be her long lost son. Lily Tomlin and Michael Sheen (who guested on 30 Rock) co-star amongst others. Includes a “Early Admission with Tina Fey & Paul Rudd” featurette.
($29.95 Blu-ray, $26.95 DVD; Kino Lorber)
A big hit in its native New Zealand, this coming-of-age dramedy, set in 1984, sees a Michael Jackson-obsessed, fantasy-prone 11-year-old, Boy, reconnect his ex-convict father while experiencing all sorts of growing pains. It’s a lovely, funny, inventive piece of international cinema – think Wes Anderson with a Kiwi accent – and well worth a gander! Extras include interviews, behind the scenes footage, and an Oscar-nominated short film, which inspired the feature, by director Taika Waititi.
($27.99 Blu-ray, $21.98 DVD; Lionsgate)
James Franco plays Alien, a cornrow-haired, gun-toting rapper/gangster (who sounds a lot like Matthew McConaughey) in this wacky, stylish tale of four girls’ quest for hard partying in Florida. Extras include a three-part behind-the-scenes, deleted scenes, a commentary, a featurette on the film’s music, and a pair of VICE featurettes.

I’m still curious why Queerty hasn’t posted anything about the movie “Enders Game” that was written by a board member of NOM and devout Mormon Orson Scott Card.
There is currently a petition and boycott being planned for the movie.
Queerty, are you again avoiding stories that put anything Mormon in a bad light? A MAJOR studio film written by a board member of NOM would seem to be of interest. It’s hit all the other gay blogs.
