How about we take this to the next level?
Our newsletter is like a refreshing cocktail (or mocktail) of LGBTQ+ entertainment and pop culture, served up with a side of eye-candy.
Director Roland Emmerich’s gay coming-of-age tale, set against the 1969 Stonewall rebellion, sure received a lot of critical venom. Written by out screenwriter Jon Robin Baitz, Stonewall follows the journey of Danny (Jeremy Irvine), a teen from the small town Midwest who flees his conservative family for life on NYC’s gay mecca, Christopher Street, where he falls in with a clique of rowdy homeless LGBTQ sex workers including Puerto Rican “scare queen,” Ray/Ramona (Jonny Beauchamp) and sassy African-American, Cong (Vlad Alexis). Stonewall Inn is their hub, and where Danny meets and falls for older Mattachine Society activist, Trevor (Jonathan Rhys Myers), who despises Danny’s friends and their flamboyance. Add corrupt cops, homophobia, and a mafia-run prostitution ring, and it all combusts on a balmy June night during a police raid on the Stonewall Inn. Were the critics too judge-y? Give it a whirl in your own home and share your opinions in our comments section!

The iconic, fierce Hasbro ’80s cartoon receives the live-action treatment from director John M. Chu. In this version, which lacks a lot of the campy and awesome details LGBT fans of the animated original had come to expect, California teenager Jerrica finds fame as singer/songwriter alter-ego Jem when her sister uploads her performance to YouTube. Add a quirky robot and decisions about loyalty to family over soulless executives for fame, and you have, um, this! Jem fans starved for some star earring realness, meanwhile, should check out the current IDW Comic series, from talented transgender illustrator, Sophie Campbell. Extras include deleted scenes, gag reel, music video, commentary, and featurette.
($34.99 Blu-ray, $30.99 DVD; Sony)
Adapted from Phoebe Gloeckner’s outstanding graphic novel, writer/director Marielle Heller’s 1970s-set dramedy follows teenager Minnie Goetze (Bell Powley), who recently had sex with her mother’s boyfriend, Monroe. However, this one-off develops into an affair and of course life-changing course for Minnie – of more sexual exploits, of drugs, and of course inevitable family drama. Powley proves a fabulous leading girl, while Kristen Wiig as mom, Alexander Sarsgaard as Monroe, and Christopher Meloni as Minnie’s dad are amongst the fantastic supporting turns. Winner of the cinematography award at last year’s Sundance, this one’s a must. Extras include deleted scenes, making-of featurette, and post-screening Q&A.

The prices on these movies are a joke, right? You couldn’t get people to watch this crap in the theaters, but you’re expecting them to pay you a mint for the privilege to hate watch it at home? This isn’t the era when owning a new VHS copy is rare and for the rich. This is the era where you can price yourself right out of existence if you’re not paying attention.
Bye, Felicia.

You can get The Diary of a Teenage Girl from Amazon for $10.50 plus shipping ($2 or so) and probably the others for similar prices. Or just wait for them to appear on Netflix.
