Elton John: I Give Up On Trying To Make Hits

Though he loves the idea of dueting with Lady Gaga, cranky piano player Elton John says he’s no longer going to spend his time trying to top the charts.

The singer has scored almost 70 UK top 40 singles during his career. But he has not had a new song in the charts for five years. “Look, I’m 63, I don’t want to be on VH1 or MTV,” he said. “I’m not going to compete with JLS or Lady Gaga. “I’m at that stage where I don’t think I can write pop music any more. I can’t sit down and do a proper rock song.” Speaking to GQ magazine, he continued: “It was OK when I was 25 or 26, but not any more. “I like to do my little side projects like Scissor Sisters and have fun, but I don’t think Elton John will be putting any pop singles out.”

Though to be fair, it’s not like Elton has anyone to trump but himself: His 1997 Princess Diana tribute single “Candle in the Wind” sold 33 million copies, and remains the best-selling single of all time. [BBC]

Good. I gave up on Elton after he played the Limbaugh wedding.

Well considering how you’re old enough to qualify for AARP Elton, I think it’s good that you’re reconciling that your days as a ‘hit’ maker are pretty much done.

Yeah Conversation, because we all know only young people make good music. I mean once you hit 40 your maturity and wisdom just get in the way……..

Though I disagreed with his Limbaugh performance, Elton continues to be an extremely talented musician who has a record of great music over so many years. So sad to see some of the comments from you bitchy ageist queens.

Honestly, if he is “trying to top the charts”, then he’s doing it for the wrong reason. He’s nothing but a commercial whore.

The late comedian Sam Kinnison once called Elton a bald-headed, gap-toothed disco dinosaur from the 70’s :)
