Openly gay Harvard minister, theologian and author Rev. Peter J. Gomes passed away yesterday due to an aneurysm and a heart attack. He taught at Harvard for two decades before publicly coming out. Since then, he spent his life addressing the religious causes and roots of homophobia, pointing out the how scripture is often used to justify all sorts of social oppression. The Harvard Divinity School professor was 68 at the time of his death.

I saw him in “For the Bible tells me so” and I read excerpts from his books. He was an amazing man full of common sense and he spoke at a level that was impossible to misunderstand. He will be missed.

This was a wonderful man and a great preacher. We lost him too soon.

Oh no! I’m so sorry to hear this. I still have my dog-eared copy of “The Good Book”. A wonderful man, and brilliant mind.
