James Dobson is a dumb-ass. What makes him so dangerous is that he truly believes his inane drivel.
To say that this protection is not extended to pregnant women and veterans is not even a cogent argument. Of course they are not included, neither are obese people, blind people, deaf people, bald people, people with crooked teeth, people with crossed-eyes and the list goes on and on. He chose those two classes of people because Bueford and Peggy Sue in the bible belt will hear that and freak out and send him a check to keep up his “noble” cause.
I hold fast to the conviction that these people will be judged too. I have this vision of all of these holier than thou types (Coulter, Dobson, Falwell, et al.) going to gates of heaven and God looking at them and saying “you got it completely wrong, my teachings are all about love, compassion and tolerance, not hatred. Enjoy your trip to hell.”

Actually, James Dobson is not a dumass!! I wish he was.
Instead he is a dangerous bigot who’s international teachings are thankfully fading from prominence and being discredited. He truly believes that (his churches interpretations of) the bible take precedence over the scientific teachings of the world, because God knows better and therefore they just need to wait until new science is finally discredited.
Sadly, I grew up in the Nazarene Church where Dobson hails from. Many of his direct relatives are ordained Nazarene Ministers (for example, his cousin is Hal London, who was assigned by Dobson to “fix” Ted Haggard), and he regularly speaks from behind the pulpit at these churches. Many of my cousins are ministers in this and other similar Evangelical churches.
I believe that these people have painted themselves into a corner with their belief systems. Because they believe their interpretation of the “Literal” word of God, their only out is to say that it must be a sin AND a choice to sin, as anything else would be the responsibility of God. They have made their belief systems “God’s Infallible Word”!
Given that, being gay is always fixable then there must be something wrong with the person who can’t stop. Hence the shame-based preaching. So instead of “You’ve done something wrong”, it’s always “there’s something wrong with you for not being able to accept God’s healing”.
So the only way out of it and get these churches to actually do anything other than hate active gays is to wait for them to die off and their understanding children to take control. I have already seen evidence that their children are already more understanding and accepting than them. (my Mother still “knows” that I am going to hell, and prays for me every day, but my sister’s family has come to visit my home) Once that happens, some sort of change should come through these churches, but I would advise you to not hold your breath.
Of course it makes for pretty tense Christmas visits – LOL!!
