Married In Canada, Partnered In Britain

flags-uk-canada.jpg

Two British ladies who got married while living abroad in Canada have now returned to their native country and want their marriage recognized. Unfortunately, though Britain’s civil partnerships law afford couples all the rights and priveleges of marriage, Britain will not recognize gay marriages from abroad.

So the lesbians in question are suing the British government and could possibly win the right for any British person to get married abroad and have their marriage recognized when they get back to Britain. Talk about baby steps! But we support their effort, and think such a fight could be very useful in the U.S., where the argument could be more compelling considering our close proximity to Canada.
