We’re not giving this poll too much weight, whether because it’s an online poll (we don’t even fully trust ours!) or it went down on a blog devoted to religion, but U.S. News & World Report quizzed readers on whether President Obama supports gay marriage, even though he publicly says he’s anti-equality. And how’d we do?
Some 27.81 percent of respondents said Obama is a truthteller, and that he doesn’t actually support marriage equality.
Which means 72.19 percent believe Obama really does want marriage for the gays, even if he won’t go on record as much.
That also means almost three-quarters of respondents believe Barack Obama is LYING TO THEIR FACES.
How about we take this to the next level?

While I recognize that full rights without actual marriage is his official stance, I find it somewhat interesting that he previously supported marriage, and now no longer does. I think he’s just playing politics, honestly, and actually does support marriage privately.

He has been lying to our faces about just about everything since he started politics. Why should any of this be any different? Who really knows what he has planned.

I think Obama has the right intentions, I just don’t yet know if he has the guts to do it. I don’t think we’ll ever see him fight for gay marriage, but if a bill crosses his desk, in his second term(if he gets one), I think he’ll sign it. I don’t think he’ll see a bill this temr and I think he’d be in a huge dilemma to play to the right or to sign it.
It’s interesting, my brother is a huge politics junky. He’s straight and doesn’t follow homo-politics like I do. Even he was unaware until the National Equality March that Obama is, in fact, NOW a “fierce advocate.”
Bill
What difference does it make if he is too much of a pussy to take a stand?
Also, Barrack Obama, if he indeed DOES believe in separate ‘institutions’ for gay Americans, is himself a bigot.
We have been FAR to lenient in this matter. Giving people the benefit of the doubt as they debate whether or not we are human enough to deserve what THEY are granted simply by being born.
Gay people need to start realizing that WE have the moral high ground here. Crimes are being carried out against nearly 30 million Americans every single day that we are denied WHAT IS ALREADY OURS.
The righteous anger that we see from religious heterosexuals is OURS, not THEIRS. It is not us who are participating in Apartheid against citizens. It is US who have been relegated to governmentally sanctioned Apartheid.
Sorry for the rant, but who the hell cares what Obama’s stance on marriage is??? He will do what ALL politicians do. He will sacrifice morality and doing what is just in exchange for a second term in office.
It is really important for gay Americans to BELIEVE that we deserve the equality we fight for. Because we do. We are ENTITLED to it, simply by virtue of being born. So when religious heterosexuals or ANY heterosexuals try and assume the moral high ground, it is very important to remind them that it is THEY who are acting illegally, immorally and abusively toward the very gay people THEY created.
The Constitution GUARANTEES equal protection under the law. A-N-Y-O-N-E who feels that that equality applies to everyone BUT gay people is a bigot. Bottom line. And we have given these bigots FAR too much power over us.
They have stolen our birthrights. Isn’t is time they give them back?

Thanks, @No. 4 · Bill.

He’s still “wrestling with his Faith.”

I agree with Bill. But they will not give us our rights. We need to take them by any means necessary. We are the victims, they are the victimizers.

Having just returned from nearly four weeks in South Africa, it is safe to say you have no idea what Apartheid actually entailed.
Do us all a favor, please, and stop with the poseur-political hysteria.

#4: At the very least, it matters if and when it comes time to sign legislation.

Very few educated, cosmopolitan people who have gay friends are against gay marriage in this day and age. This probably applies to many high profile conservatives too. Of course Obama is pretending. As is Hilary and most other democrats. I doubt even McCain really cares much about the issue. The sad thing is, that even today, unless politicans claim not to be for gay marriage, they will not get elected. Imagine how much ammunition Fox News and the Republicans would have had if the democratic nominee (Obama or Hillary) had been for gay marriage?
However, as people change their mind, politicians will start coming out in support of gay marriage (or as they step out of elected office, like Bill Clinton.) Let’s not be overly hysterical. I would rather have an Obama in office pretending to only support civil unions, than a Palin in office, actually pushing legislation to make sure we can’t get married in the future.
I’m not saying we shouldn’t push for marriage, or hold politicians’ feet over the fire; that’s our job, but lay off the nutty hysteria. Otherwise we end up no better than Fox news. The best thing one can do is be out, be out to everyone, show the straight people around you that when they vote against ‘gay marriage’ they are voting against their friends’ and neighbors’ happiness. We will win this battle soon!

Whether Obama truly believes in same-sex marriage is a moot point. He can’t do anything about it anyway. I personally do think he is in favor of same-sex marriage but of course he is a politician and will go with the numbers. It’s just not politically expedient when the majority of the country is opposed.
Schteve
He favored it when he was running for state senator.
If people switch on the issue, it’s from being opposed to supporting same-sex marriage, not the other way around.
