Rosie O’Donnell’s Brother Compares UFC To Gay Adult Films On NY Assembly Floor

When giving a speech urging fellow New York lawmakers not to pass a bill that would legalize fights like UFC in the state, it’s important to stick to two key strategies: 1. Open with a Sound of Music quote, and 2. Reference gay porn.

Follow these cardinal rules and you’ll achieve your goal without question.

Well,we thought so at least. But perhaps not, as evidenced by the impassioned speech gay NY Assembly Member Daniel O’Donnell (yes, Rosie’s brother) gave recently on the floor.

“Let’s start at the very beginning — a very good place to start,” begins O’Donnell. Except instead of launching into his Do-Re-Mi’s with the Von Trapp children, he lays out his best argument for staying clear of brutal televised hand-to-hand combat.

O’Donnell is clearly not a fan of the bloodsport, but the irony isn’t lost on him completely.

“I thought I should learn a little bit about (MMA),” he said. “Well, I should really like it. You have two nearly naked, hot men trying to dominate each other. That’s gay porn with a different ending.”

“I won’t describe the endings for you, but as I’ve gotten older the endings are less important.”

Good to know. O’Donnell continues by making some much more tangible points about money in politics, gambling and organized crime, then gets to this tennis metaphor:

“For those of you who don’t know tennis, there’s somebody who serves the ball, and somebody who receives the ball. I prefer to serve the ball, but, you know, to each his own.”

We’ll leave that one alone.

Rosie even gets a shoutout. She apparently sent Daniel an email urging him to vote to allow MMA fights in New York — an indication to Daniel of the strong lobbying forces at work.

And it looks like Rosie got her way — the bill passed 113-25.
