It’s just crazy because I’m very sensitive to that issue and if I thought something was offensive I wouldn’t want to be part of it. … Plus all my gay friends use that word all the time so (protesters will) have to go and give them a hard time too. The line has, however, been pulled from the movie’s trailer following complaints.
—Winona Ryder not understanding what all the fuss was about the “so gay” line in The Dilemma, which she stars in, because after all she would never “be part” of a movie she thought was so “offensive” (though I’m pretty sure S1m0ne offended me to my core). Ah yes, the but my gay friends excuse! I haven’t seen that one in a long time. [via]

poor washed-up, crazy as bat shit Winona. Doesn’t she have a Klepto’s Anonymous meeting she should be attending?

I want to hear openly-closeted lesbian Queen Latifah’s opinion on this. Latifah is a lesbian. How will she defend this homophobic stupidity?
scott ny'er
you hear young (and old) people, of all races, who are into the rap culture, use the N word. All. The. Time. So, I don’t your opening question to this post is a really good one and succeeds in what ur trying to accomplish. And the answer would be yes.
Mr. Enemabag Jones
I’m getting sick and tired of these goddamned het Hollywood douchebags telling us what we should, and should not be offended by.
We’re starting to see a new wave of pissed off queers, like the fisrt wave of the seventies; and the second wave of the eighties. We’re also seeing who are real friends and allies are.
They seem fine with us as long as we’re their doormats, lap dogs, and vicitms. When we start to voice our anger, suddenly we’re being told to sit down and shut up.
Where was all their moral outrage when Washington was ignoring our equality?
I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again:
If on September 11, 2001 Al Qaida had flown their planes into the Hollywood sign, rather than the World Trade Center towers, America would e a better place today.
And to the gay readers of Queerty–AND QUEERTY–stop using gay slurs. As long as we keep doing it/ hets will continue to jusify their own use of anti-gay slurs
Sexy Rexy
You only like to compare gays to blacks when its convenient, Queerty. Too many times, you’ve allowed white queens on this board to use the N word, so don’t stoop low like this and make this unfair comparison between the word “gay” and the word “nigger”, cause there is NONE. Now, had Vaughn said “faggot”, I’d take a bullet for you, but, it’s so lame for you to assume Ryder would use the “n” word when she hasn’t even used the “f” word. It’s very manipulative of you.
reason
@Mr. Enemabag Jones: Absolutely not, America would be a better place if we killed those terrorist before they stepped foot on a plane.
Dollie
@reason: Absolutely not. America would be a much better place if our bloodthirsty, malevolent, imperialist, greedy reputation didn’t always get the best of us.
Luxury
Um… This is a bit if a reach comparing Nigger to someone saying a car is “Gay”. Vince didn’t call anyone a faggot or a nigger in the movie. This obsession that Queerty (and some of it’s readers) have with Black people and race baiting is getting fucking old…
afrolito
There is absolutely no valid comparison between ‘nigger’ and ‘so gay’, but I’m sure queerty knew that already. Race baiting always seems to work tho!
As far as Winona goes, I totally know what she means, and she’s definitely not some crazy homophobe.
jason
Message to Winona: too much cleavage, honey. Show some dignity and cover up for a change. I don’t see your fellow male thespians walking around exposing their hairy chests at official Hollywood functions, so I don’t see why you should be able to either.
Stop playing the female card, scrubber.
adman
Winona Ryder always looks like her head is about to explode. It’s like any minute now, Splat!!

The pat downs everybody is complaining about may have stopped 9-11…think about that…

so much nasty on here..what happened to Morning Goods? Did the real shallows win that too??
alan brickman
She reminds me of Jean Seberg…

Who really wants to waste any time labouring to be offended by a Vince Vaughan comedy?
Words come into usage and out of usage. I am very happy for gay to migrate away from being the exclusive label of persons with expressed same sex attration and sexual tendencies. When you look at what the word and world of gay does for straights – it can be seen as a cultural mode that de-naturalises the oh-so-obvious supremacy of straight.
It is possible to be a homosexual and to comprehend exactly what is meant by the term “electric cars are gay”. It does not mean that those cars are faulty, undesireable or that they rub pairs of genitals together, quite the opposite – it means that electric cars de-naturalise the oh-so-obvious supremancy of fossil fuel cars. People shouldn’t be expected to change from one type of car to another without some sort of cognitive dissonance.
In a sense it is actually a queer victory that this acceptance of de-naturalisation can be tolerated, expressed, parodied and more within mainstream media. Give the transformative gift of the gay over to other worthy initiatives too.
I have.
Michael
Hey eyes always look SO crazy. She looks INSANE.
ewe
If the “that’s so gay” line is used as a negative connotation and put down to whoever is at the receiving end then i consider that very different than caddy sarcasm among friends or comrades.
Aaron in Honolulu
Let’s be honest, lots of gays (including most of you commenters) have used the word “gay” as in lame as a joke amongst other gays. Disappointingly, even I have used it. Not that it’s good to use but I’m not going to judge her. It would be hypocritical. You shouldn’t either.
ewe
@Aaron in Honolulu: well maybe it is a generational word then because i have NEVER EVER used the word gay to mean lame. Never once. So maybe this will pass too.
alicia banks
ditto
this weak evasion is more proof that gay is the new black indeed!

Thomaas Pell
How can gay be the new black, when black is not resolved?
Pall Mall
Thank you, Thomas! I get so tired of the phrase “____ is the new Black.” Black is still dealing with crap, especially in the racist gay community. Sheesh. Black is still the same old Black, even after all these centuries.
Alex
I think it’s pretty ridiculous that the first commenter trashes her because of the personal problems that she had.
ewe
@Thomaas Pell: oh calm down. Being openly gay in a hostile culture is a civil rights issue just like being black is. Stop splitting hairs. If you can’t fucking figure that simple concept and analogy out then get the hell away from me. Your bullshit is so damn tired.
ewe
@Pall Mall: include me as one of your oppressors cause you are a pathetic victim turning on a minority group to stoke your own bigotry.
winwin
Whatever. I have no problem with that phrase. My friends use he’s so gay for our gay friends who’s super gay as in rainbow glitter gay. Gay is not a trademarked word and anyone can use that word however they liked. The N word on the other hand is used to infer superiority and it’s not Queerty’s position to question how she’d react to a hypothetical question.
F off, whoever writes this trite.
Aaron in Honolulu
@Alex: I know, it’s completely unnecessary. A person who results to insults is a person who has run out of ideas. Her comment had nothing to do with her past shoplifting. What an irrelevant comment.
