Personality-challenged Republican Presidential candidate Ted Cruz has scored another important victory for in his ongoing effort to gain support from the Religious Right.
On Thursday, he was officially endorsed by Bob Vander Plaats, who leads the Iowa-based conservative group, The Family Leader.
Plaats is a two-time gubernatorial candidate who has previously backed the likes of Mike Huckabee and Rick Santorum.
He wields such influence, Donald Trump reportedly joked that he’d turn around his plane to join The Family Leader’s presidential forum if Plaats would assure him his support.
How about we take this to the next level?
Our newsletter is like a refreshing cocktail (or mocktail) of LGBTQ+ entertainment and pop culture, served up with a side of eye-candy.
Plaats is only the latest right-wing figure to side with Cruz, who’s already garnered support from staunch ulta-conservatives like Troy Newman, who wants the government to execute abortionists; Ron Baity, who once compared gay rights to Ebola; Flip Benham, who was once convinced for harassing an abortion doctor and regularly protests gay weddings; Sandy Rios, a floridly antigay radio show host; Dick Black, a convicted abortion doctor stalker who holds protests at gay couples’ weddings; Sandy Rios, a virulently anti-LGBT radio host and hate group official; and Cynthia Dunbar, who once compared gay rights to “pre-Holocaust Germany.”
Plaats says Cruz is “the most consistent and principled conservative who has the ability to not only win Iowa but I believe to win the nomination.”
According to Right Wing Watch:
Plaats has done whatever it takes to scare voters about the dire consequences of gay rights. He warned that the legalization of same-sex marriage would lead to “tyranny” and sanction “a parent marrying their child.”
He defended his group’s comparison of homosexuality to second-hand smoke by explaining that both represent “a public health risk,” adding: “If we’re teaching the kids, ‘don’t smoke, because that’s a risky health style,’ the same can be true of the homosexual lifestyle.”
Vander Plaats also took the time to criticize an Iowa anti-bullying conference that focused on the targeting of LGBT youth, saying that the state should instead be promoting abstinence-only summits.

It’s amazing that ANY candidate for President would accept an endorsement from ANY hate filled person or group ! If they are, I’d have to presume they don’t believe in our constitution.
1EqualityUSA
I suppose it’s too late for an abortion when they are running for president. If they can put a man on the moon….

Ted Cruz has somehow scored this endorsement???? He’s like the f#ckboy of the religious right!

This explains the pinched expression he has….

This photo is gross.

@Nahald: The entire republican party doesn’t care about the Constitution. They want a religious entry test for immigrants which is disgustingly unconstitutional.

I’m pro RETROACTIVE ABORTION–Ted Cruz is at the TOP of my list!!

Can he just move to North Korea…he’s so whack he’d probably love it there!!!!

I don’t know if you guys have put two and two together but Cruz IS going to be the republican candidate. It is going to be a very close race if the democrats don’t come up with an alternative to what is out there, an unelectable throwback to the 1990’s running more out of jealousy of her husband than an ideology and a reincarnated Lyndon LaRouche for an alternative to her.
I see it Clinton/Omalley vs. Cruz/Rubio. I had my fingers crossed that George Pataki of NY would show some signs of life and give it a serious shot but as was to be expected his near-dead acting ass was a let down. Christy seemed to have forgotten that “you first get the damn job and THEN turn into yourself. Not turn into yourself while you are trying to get the damn job.” The whole damn country has all but told him “fat boy, go sit down.” I tell you, its a mess. And a dangerous one at that because it seems almost as though the damn country IS leaderless. Obama, at this point, seems like a joke on the world stage. And I voted for him twice. I don’t think he quite gets that white men in power HAVE to slap people down to show them who is the boss. He is simply too nice, and there lies the problem with him.
I don’t think Trump is going to make it past the end of January. He has done more damage to the republican party than he sure as hell set out to do and he knows it. He did this to be vindictive after he got dissed back in 2012 when he wanted to hold that debate in NYC and no one wanted to attend. He vowed revenge and here it is. BIG TIME. I don’t think even HE thought the republican party was in the state of disaster it is obviously in. This is not the party that I belong to when I was a Reagan democrat and I sure as hell ain’t voting for Cruz just to say I did my civic duty and voted. This might be the first time a third party candidate actually wins the damn election. And that ain’t necessarily good for anyone, regardless of how much we might not like either side presently.
1EqualityUSA
Bob LaBlah, W-o-m-e-n will take cruz and force his face into the toilet bowl. We’ve got you covered. No worries.
CWM85
Cruz is courting the hard heavy right and that is who he is but come general election time the whole country is looking more for just an anti gay candidate. Cruz is anti gay. That bodes well in south. Beyond that he will lose other swing and very dem states if he is nominee.
youarekiddingme
@Bob LaBlah: Bob, if by some faint miracle that lunatic Cruz were able to pull a miracle and become elected…My husband and I would pack up and move out of this country like two draft dodgers in the middle of the Vietnam War! That guy would be nothing but trouble to the LGBTQI Community for DECADES to come (with the appointments of at least two Supreme Court Justices). What a travesty to this country it would be if that moron were ever elected POTUS!
I agree, I think Donald has blown out many of his candles of support with his last statement and his probably on his way out…we’ll see.
I wouldn’t agree though that the Democratic Party is out. If faced with a religious, right-wing nut job like Cruz (who won’t be able to keep his real views in check very long) most people (remember supported same-sex marriage in most states) won’t put up with a bigot like him in the Whitehouse. The closer Cruz climbs up in the polls, the more scrutiny will be placed on his personal life and his person affiliations and views. I just don’t think he’ll hold up to that scrutiny…My opinion.
1EqualityUSA
CMW85, and don’t forget, everybody hates him.

@youarekiddingme: Keep a few things in mind before you write off a Cruz/Rubio ticket. Rubio wrote a book that had several lies in it but still did not prevent him from being elected to office. He was young, articulate in his speech and was exactly what the Cuban/American community wanted, a fresh YOUNG face. A symbol that the community was coming around to the 21st century.
His Cuban/American constituents in Congress did NOT want him in office but remained loyal and shut up and went along with it. When he didn’t speak out against Obama reaching out to Cuba that was a clear sign that he was the future. The more the “old guard” tried to rally forces against the softening stance Obama was taking the more antiquated they looked and they all knew it. What other choice did they have except to shut up? It seems almost as though it was a cultural shock to them to not realize that todays average Cuban in Miami nor in Cuba itself don’t give one flying fuck about the ideologies of each other. Cubans on the island now have cellphones and gays are not subject to the degree of persecution they once were. Miami’s younger Cuban community listen out of respect to their elders still bitching but have no shame walking away and letting them stand there and do just that, bitch about the past. So where the hell is the argument the old folks are trying to keep going? Its a fading memory no longer relevant to a populace that wasn’t even born at that time and have parents who struggle to remember those days.
The only problem Rubio has is his youth. He is simply too young for the job. In steps Ted Cruz, a man who has and still can rally white America against the hispanic “invasion” (he’s was raised in Canada so what the hell does he care). Cruz can speak ill of the lower class hispanics and come off a hero. As long as he has Rubio by his side he will not come off as an ogre. He looks more the man who will annihilate all perceived enemies of white Christian America (the muslims), keep…..you know what I mean.
It seems like a bad dream but that is the scenario we are dealing with. And I bet that’s just what happens. Our first………I won’t say it. Its too bad a dream that is going to become reality. All thanks to Trumps vindictive ass.

I strongly urge people to check this site out. Often on this site we talk about republicans pissing off minorities. Absolutely correct. From that xenophobic bigot Donald Trump to the senile Ben Carson…
But we forget that republicans are also deadset on pissing off a majority. Women. Isn’t that a winning formula? Making stupid comments about rape, and pissing off women. The most powerful voting bloc in this country that sways elections and got Obama elected twice… and which will sweep Hillary into office next year.
Why oh why do republicans want to make stupid comments about rape? Oh and if you think there hasn’t been any comments made about this during these primaries, think again.
Ben Carson has come up with quite a few gems.
aliengod
I don’t think Cruz has a chance of getting the nomination. I still think Trump will pull it off. If a Republican were to be elected President, he’d definitely be the most supportive of LGB. If things go as they should, Hillary will be in jail by election time, which would mean Trump vs. Sanders. Quite frankly I can’t imagine either of them as President. This has to be the worst group of candidates on both sides that I’ve ever seen.
Giancarlo85
@aliengod: http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-3182050/How-Donald-Trump-s-lawyer-boasted-destroying-beauty-queen-interview-claimed-marital-rape-legal.html
Wrong. This story will come back up. And Trump is not supportive of our community. Keep dreaming. Hillary won’t be in jail as she hasn’t committed any wrong doing or broke any law.
You’re a JOKE.
1EqualityUSA
Gerrymandering, unhealthy for democracy, brought us this ass from Texas. The man has a real talent of getting everybody to hate him, even his own party hates him, his dorm-mates hate him, and his own children will hate him once they see what a poser he is. He really is a weird dude. Not a chance will this gnome make it to the oval office. He’s disgusting. His face is not something we want to look at for four years. If that’s all the koch bros can manage to present to us, whoa. The man is hated by texans, women, gays, republicans…. the man is hated. He’s a nothing-burger. Rubio is a spoiled brat who thinks the Senate is beneath his nibs. He has no ground game, no substance, and very little respect. Double nothing-burgers. I’m so thankful for the Tea party for letting this happen to the GOP. Koch bros and tea partiers are the gift that keep on giving.
Giancarlo85
Hillary in jail? DREAM THE FECK ON. Hillary is steamrolling and has deflected any allegations. Republicans tried to catch her in an 11 hour kangaroo court. Failed.
https://i.guim.co.uk/img/media/fcf97695cd70340dc7cfaea37e2298cc2d21ad33/0_0_4096_2457/4096.jpg?w=460&q=85&auto=format&sharp=10&s=89dba7c2316f993e0d622671c5eacea2
You republicans are totally screwed.
You have no real allegation on her. If there was anything, it would have been uncovered by now. So far, nothing. And the Kangaroo court failed to find anything on her either. If they did, she would have been indicted in the Congress… which is essentially a courtroom (albeit a kangaroo court right now).
aliengod
@Giancarlo85: The only “JOKE” on here is you. Listen, I understand your fear of a Trump Presidency. He’d likely make necessary cuts to the welfare system and you’d be forced to actually get a job. I’m sure that’s a terrifying concept for you. You’d have to cut back on your countless hours trolling Queerty.
Giancarlo85
@aliengod: I’m sorry, but he won’t make it pass the primaries. Those allegations will resurface. They were written in a biography afterall. Oh and I have an actual job unlike most republican douchebags.
I don’t live in welfare states like Kentucky or Alabama. I live in California, which has the highest economic and development growth in the last 5 years in the country. California continues to surpass states like Texas and Kentucky in job creation.
You’re a worthless person. Trump should be in jail. Hillary will steamroll to the Presidency. I have no fear about that one. She is unstoppable and you have NOTHING as expected.
Giancarlo85
“Necessary cuts”? LOL. That’s hilarious. No republican would cut the welfare system. Want to know why?
Republican states are highly dependent on welfare and federal money.
This is why States like California only get .70 cents for every dollar they put in towards the federal government, and Southern states get $2 for every dollar they contribute. Seems quite uneven.
I would be very happy if republican states see their federal funding cut… that way their voters would realize they are voting for the wrong party. Louisiana was a foreshadowing.
Be prepared for a shellacking!
Giancarlo85
If it wasn’t for the billions of federal funding propping up republican states, those states would be fiscally insolvent. So that’s it guys. We in the blue states are keeping red states financially afloat. Without us liberals, entire republican states would go bankrupt.
Bob LaBlah
@1EqualityUSA: You might want to recheck the numbers. I honestly don’t see that ol’ hillbilly rallying women on her side this time around as she did back in ’08, just before Obama did us a favor and decided to give it a shot. Not that I am saying Cruz isn’t a turn off but I do mean what I say that this guy is going to be the nominee whether the GOP likes it or not. Who else out there other than Trump with a following that seems plausible?
We all know Ben Carson is what he is, a present day Hermann Cain that is fading out fast. The polls are already showing that he is fading fast and he is now sounding like a present day Alan Keyes more and more. Remember when Alan Keyes got arrested when he showed up uninvited at a GOP debate and they wouldn’t even let him in the building? They didn’t even want him as a spectator. Fast forward to present day and here ol’ Ben has just told the GOP that if they don’t play by the rules he is going to launch a third party bid. I mean really. This is what happens when a fool begins to think he matters and couldn’t/won’t accept that he never did nor was it ever intended for him to matter. Just stand there, read your lines and shut up.
Personally, I think a Kasich/Huntsmann ticket might work. Its a long shot but I think it beats the shit out of a Cruz/Rubio ticket. Kasich comes off as a sober John Boehner but at this time I am willing to accept any damn thing but Cruz/Rubio.
There IS going to be a third party candidate this time who just might win. Who? I have no idea but the climate couldn’t be better. This is scary folks. Say what we want and race be damned this is the only country we know of and had better start paying more attention to just what the hell is being offered this election….unelectable people (party be damned) or people who have no business in office in the first place but will, if elected, dictate to you and I how we are going to live.
Giancarlo85
@Bob LaBlah: Except Kasich mismanaged his own state and has vanished and Huntsman is nothing more than a Reagan republican.
A third party candidate who just might win? You’ve got to be kidding me. It’s too late for that.
Yeah, this country needs to start paying attention and put their support behind Hillary Clinton. These republicans would steer this country into a big iceberg head-on.
Mack
Nothing that Cruz does against the LGBT surprises me, I would expect him to pick up even more from the hate teams. None of the Republicans running will support the LGBT so why would any of us even consider voting for them? The Log Cabin Republicans needs to get into the 21 century and stop thinking about the 1800’s.
I don’t see Hillary being in jail. Nothing has been proven illegal but a lot of speculations. Just like the Republicans keeps talking about impeaching President Obama, first he has to break the law and he’s yet to do that-they only dream he is.
Kieran
If GOP front runner Trump falls, Cruz takes his place.
Trump has been tough on illegal immigration and wants tighter controls on Muslim refugees brought into the country to protect the homeland. Brooklyn-born and raised Trump has attended gay weddings of friends. If he is the nominee he will likely reach out to gays for support giving them increased leverage with Dems.
Cruz wants to double the number of legal immigrants to the US and quintuple the number US visas issued to foreign workers. Cruz wants US “boots on the ground” in Syria and would probably ignite World War III against Russia or Iran if elected. And oh yeah, Cruz flat out HATES gay people period
1EqualityUSA
They have yet to have their moment in the sun regarding women’s issues. Wait until they start opening their mouths about rape, forced ultrasounds, “Shutting the whole thing down” birth control, and equal pay for equal work. The numbers will flourish under the predictably cringe-worthy republican mouth-spew. It’s really fun. Ann Richards (Texas) can attest to this kind of fun.

@1EqualityUSA: “The man has a real talent of getting everybody to hate him, even his own party hates him, his dorm-mates hate him, and his own children will hate him once they see what a poser he is.”
When Bush and the fiasco of the election of 2000 was going full bloom not ONE sitting republican in congress stepped forward to support him and say that he had won that election. NOT A ONE. If that didn’t tell this guy (Bush) that his own party wanted nothing to do with him I don’t know how else it could have been expressed. NOT A ONE OF THEM until the republican staffed Supreme Court declared him the winner that is. And even then it was a week or so later.
It kind of makes one wonder if they too saw that disaster that was to come, huh?

I forgot about that, Bob La Blah. Dark times, brought about by a politically bent Supreme Court. Do we really need proliferation of this in 2016? The next President may replace up to four justices. The GOP is desperate, because cheating can only go so far. The GOP needs more Scaliaction.

Some of you should quit listening to fear and look at facts. Sometimes gay media is worse than Fox, etc. No America is not looking for an anti gay President. Gay marriage support is around 60%. Second Trump has a better shot than Cruz. The reason Cruz does not have the Trump ppl is because he is a creep. His supporters are crazy..even worse than Trump’s. Women will drive to to polls to make sure Cruz does not get it. He creeps them out along with other groups (gays, blacks, Hispanics, etc.).
This country is always changing and the past two elections are an indicator that the GOP have an uphill battle. Third point is Bernie Sanders has more support than Trump. And he has a small shot at the Dem nomination. You would never know that watching the news. Just because all you see on the news is crazy Trump and the GOP does not mean it represents the country.
Giancarlo85
@mikelphx: I don’t know about that. Trump has about as much of a chance as Ted Cruz. Trump has disapproval ratings in polls as high as former President Bush. People can’t stand him and view him as completely untrustworthy. The GOP is looking for the most conservative, ridiculous and vapid candidate they can get. The GOP needs to appeal to their base, but the fact is they aren’t enough to win any elections. They even lost Louisiana in an off year.
Desert Boy
@Bob LaBlah: You make an interesting argument. I don’t agree, however, that Calgary Cruz will be the GOP nominee. He’s Joe McCarthy 2.0 and even more divisive — than Trump. I remain convinced the Repugs will nominate Trump unless they try to blow up their convention, then Trump will leave the GOP and he will run as a third party candidate. Polls show if he does this, 70% of his supporters will follow him.
martinbakman
Family Leader actually received millions from Obama’s White House office on Faith Based Initiatives . Eventually the White House woke up and cut them off. Vander Pants is a hateful DB IMO, and our tax dollars paid is fat salary. So fvckt upp.
Cruz and Vander Pants both know hate sells and are happilt sucking up the $ donations.
CWM85
Cruz should be disqualified from running because he was born in Canada. At least we know Obama was born in Hawaii… have no idea why he is allowed to run…
youarekiddingme
@martinbakman: Vander Plaats endorsed Santorum and Huckabee in 2008 and 2012. He’s a conservative republican…There is no information (and absolutely no credible reason to believe) that he would be paid a salary from our tax dollars.
Btw, it’s not “Obama’s office of Faith Based Initiatives”…Bush was the one who started the office and he filled it with religious leaders. Obama now has members from the HRC, Boys and Girls Clubs and other civic organizations as well. Its goals are the community helping the community. Go look it up sometime…
Btw, it’s hard to decipher your post. Spelling and abreviations are a bit much.

Ted Cruz has higher unfavorability ratings than Donald Trump. 2/3rds of Americans in recent polling overall do not trust Trump and view him favorably.
Is the republican party just trying to destroy any chance at winning next year? They are doing a damn good job at it.
Giancarlo85
@Giancarlo85: *And view him UNFAVORABLY. Those numbers are higher with Ted Cruz.
Bob LaBlah
The Sunday morning talk show have Cruz in the lead. A slight lead but he is now in the lead. I knew in my heart this is what was going to happen. Trump will be finished by the middle of January but I am not happy with what will replace him.

James Hart
@Giancarlo85: Hillary should be in jail.
James Hart
@William Hutcheson: This will be a low voter turnout election because an African/American is not running so many African/Americans will stay home, and gays now have constitutionalized gay marriage and women have had legal abortion for 40 years so gays and women will not vote in great numbers. This very may well be a big GOP election year.
James Hart
@Giancarlo85: Most Americans do not think the way you do. Thank God.
Gary Hecklinger
Ya know… Talk about discrimination…
Giancarlo85
@James Hart: On what basis? Oh that’s right you have nothing.
@James Hart: Most polls show otherwise. Want to do anymore republican brownnosing on here while you’re at it?
What do you mean Most do not think the way I do? Of course they do. That is why republicans will lose next year.
@James Hart: Dumbest post of the year. African Americans don’t decide elections (and I mean no offense to African Americans). Women do. Women will turn-out in huge numbers after republicans will get totally crushed.
Big GOP election year my ass. All the indicators show otherwise.
What basis do you have for saying it’ll be a big GOP election year? Is that what you want? OF COURSE IT IS. You are a gay republican.
The fact you think African Americans and women will stay home is a pile of rubbish. People have other reasons for voting. Hillary is incredibly popular among women and minority voters.
Giancarlo85
@James Hart: Again, I have to go back to this gem. Republicans constantly say this garbage yet have nothing to back it up. If anything, most of the republican party should be in jail for accepting bribes.
Poll after poll shows Hillary with major leads over any republican challenger and she is clearly stronger in various aspects such as national security and the economy.
Most Americans are going to be voting for Hillary, and not a republican conservative that will make it through.
James Hart… you never cease to amaze me with the ignorance of your posts.
Giancarlo85
Republicans want Hillary in jail only for one reason. Not because she violated any laws (she didn’t). They want her in jail because they know they have no chance against her in the general election.
James Hart. I’ll pass you the tissue box next year, if you’re even around posting (which I highly doubt).

On todays Sunday morning talk shows both Fox and MSNBC are saying that there is going to be a third party candidate. What I found the most shocking is how Fox, of all people, literally took apart Cruz in a not-so-clandestine way. I mean the guy was almost in your face when he said that “Trump makes Cruz looks the lesser of two evils”, his exact words.
I started watching Fox right before Thanksgiving and noticed how when they pan the audience at Trump and Cruz rallies they never show the entire crowd. And they also show only the older people in the crowd. I am beginning to wonder are they trying to tell people NOT THESE TWO, PLEASE in a subtle way (which if true I totally agree). The only problem is there is no one else out there who doesn’t come off as a lackluster fool either. Christy now appears more cartoonish and ass-kiss-ish at every debate. Fiorina looks more of a refugee from the play Wicked than some one who was actually given the chance and succeeded in doing nothing else but getting rich while running HP into the ground and also the ONLY one who thinks she accomplished something. I’ll spare you my personal opinion of the rest but I’m sure we are on the same page.
This is scary folks. There are no leaders at ALL this time around at a very critical time one is needed.
Giancarlo85
People on Fox and MSNBC say a lot of stuff.
Doesn’t make it all true.
But Trump if he loses will run as a third party candidate. The republican party claims they have a promise he won’t run as a third party candidate, but he’s not exactly the most honest guy out there.
Fiorina has a disastrous economic record… she single handedly destroyed 40,000 jobs in her failed CEO job. SHe never had another CEO job after that.
So yea we sorta agree at least with the republican candidates.
Hillary is my choice and will remain my choice to lead this nation.

I’ve stopped thinking any of these homophobic candidates had a chance a long time ago. Ol’ green eggs and ham teddy here stands least chance along with brain dead Ben Carson.

@James Hart: And one thing I forgot to mention… Considering how stupidly offensive you republicans are… This will be a high turnout general election. People know the stakes. The turnout will be as high as 2012. Hillary is a high interest candidate. This isn’t rocket science.
