Emotions are running high in California, where same-sex marriage advocates recently took their frustration out on homes of people who support Proposition 8, which would overturn gay marriage in the state:
For the second time in a week, homeowners in South San Jose have been targeted for their support of a proposition that would change the California constitution to define marriage as a union between a man and a woman.
Unlike the previous incident where no law was broken, the culprits who spray-painted large “No on 8” messages Sunday night on the garage doors of two homes on a cul-de-sac near Monterey and Bernal roads could face jail time and a fine if arrested and convicted. San Jose police were called to the scene and filed a report, according to the homeowners.
C’mon, people. We know it’s important to defeat Proposition 8, but you don’t need to be besmirching people’s homes. That’s something we’d expect from the haters, not the lavender lovers.

This is just like Ashley Todd and the backward “Bâ€. Look how carefully the No On 8 is spray painted on the garage. There was a truck next door that was “vandalized†also with No on 8 in a different color paint but was sprayed only on the rear window, so it could be easily removed wit ha scraper and not have to have the truck repainted. These places are in a cul-de-sac where everyone would notice vandals especially if they took the time and did it as neatly as the photos show. The San Jose police have a hard time finding everything but doughnuts. Get a clue Queerty editors this was done by the Yes on 8 bigots to get attention. You bought the media BS hook, line and stinker!

Ugh, who ever did this was not thinking. I mean yeah, they are trying to take rights away, but that doesn’t mean we need to do crimes. Chalk and chalk paint gets the point accross well enough. Plus it wouldn’t be a crime. Or heck going to a church and taking all the yes on 8 propaganda and pushing it off the table and behind the desk, to where no one sees it, works too.

Damn gay people are as easy to fool as Drudge is. Oh wait. Hmmm? I agree with the first poster. Given the fact they are willing to lie I would not be so quick to assume this is real.

I’m in conservative Orange County, CA (yes, I should be the object of pitty and prayer, but not for the social conservatives; rather, for the gay community). I’ve been monitoring blogs and posting boards, participating in rallies, and providing information wherever I can. I purchased 40 lawn signs for our lawn, and I am now down to 7. My car has been plastered with bumper stickers reading “Yes on 8.” It has been my sad experience that the proponents for proposition 8 will do just about anything, and do it in the name of God. My immediate thought, upon reading this posting, was that this was a false claim of harrassment. If I am incorrect, I am swayed entirely by the prevelant behavior demonstrated to me by these folks, who will stop at nothing–absolutely nothing–to push their discrimination through. Is it ugly? It’s hedious.
Matt
Yeah this smells pretty fishy to me. Unless its some high schoolers, there just isn’t an organized group of gays in south san jose that has mentioned doing anything like this. Taking signs or taping notes to them is one thing, that’s crossing a line and I think we all know it.
Maybe the SJPD ought to take a look at these homeowners’ latest credit transactions, see if they’ve been to the paint isle at Orchard lately. San Jose might be the in Bay Area, but its full of those screwy Mormon assholes who’ve got into a tizzy over Prop 8.
Also funny is that this happens once Prop 8 starts sinking in the polls.

helpin coz?! ur doin it wrong!
CHURCHILL-Y
This is crazy, and it will not gain us any supporters at all. It might just have the opposite effect.
I don’t doubt that Gay vandals were behind this given how some from our community have been behaving in CA recently:

All this criminal behavior and hatred towards opposing views is gonna only help those who want to throw us back at the end of the bus do it faster and in a more grandiose scale.

There are several attempts like this- for the record- that have attempted to claim that the no on 8 are the same as the pro 8 people. There was a claim by one pro 8 person for example that he was beat up by a no on 8 supporter. I am still amazed by how many people are willing to believe them despite the fact that the campaign itself is openly lying in its ads. From where does one derive the ability to trust someone who has already lied to you and has shown no remorse for doing so? I think this goes beyond gullible into a pathological need to believe people aren’t as bad as we fear them to be. Well, unfortunately some are, and that’s why I don’t trust when they argue they have been vandalized. They haven’t given me any reason to trust them.

This attempt at false equivalence is a common tact, by the way, of the right. if we say they are intollerant they try to prove that we are just as or more intollerant. We say they are lying, they claim we are lying.Etc. I am surprised gay groups don’t realize this?
JJ
I think that if I were the Judge in this case, I might consider how many gay people have had their home’s vandalized with anti-gay graffiti before I meeted out a stiff sentence.
Wrong is wrong, but each side has their extremists.
When you start questioning the human equality of someone because of their sexuality you are bound to get some people who are so deeply hurt and angry that they act out inappropriately or even unlawfully.
I would never endorse or condone damage to property, but this is a very basic struggle.
P.S. I believe there’s a good chance this is a political dirty trick. I think that many Mormons feel so much pressure from the totalitarian mind-set within which they live that they would excuse themselves for pulling this sort of stunt as long as the end is achieved.
I continue to encourage people to Vote No on 8 cuz its the right thing to do.
Woof
Has anyone seen what the latest poll statistics are for the Prop?
rigs
I don’t believe No on 8 people even did this, the other side probably did it knowing it would turn people off… We should only be so smart and fake a gay bashing for christs sake!
Ed
No one in their right minds believes that in San Jose anti-Prop 8 proponents are responsible for this. Pro civil rights persons in the most liberal of areas wouldn’t even do this. What’s to gain here? This whole cul-de-sac area probably shares the same point of view as the homeowner so what would be the purpose of defacing someone’s property when the issue is not contested in this neighborhood.
Total sham!- Queerty’s staff is generally savvy but they seem to have left the critical lens off on this one.

They should be acting like this. No need to fight! With this way they will loose votes. Every vote counts!

I’m not from CA, but am following the No on 8 campaign closely. we’re rooting for you. Today I stumbled across this youtube posting: http://www.youtube.com/user/dah58dah58 , and it scared the crap out of me, because it seems so objective until the last about minute, when it slants crazily in favor of a yes vote.
the comments following the video were so supportive.
anything being done out there to combat this one? The prop 8 in plain language cartoon is the closest thing to a swift boat I’ve seen, and I’d love it if there was a powerful response! Come on, guys! The rest of us in more conservative areas are hanging on and hoping you can set the legal precedence out there. Yes, it’s important for CA for sure, but queers everywhere know that if it’s shut down in CA, we’ll never see the light of equality where we live.
We are all pulling for you!
artemis malvoti
just get rid of the signs!!
then its like it was never posted to the people who pass through
Vigilante work.
that’s what the GSA/friends of GSA and other groups are doing around my neighborhood.
