Your fave homophobic business owners and Ted Cruz have teamed up to produce a video depicting themselves wallowing in self-pity discussing the alleged war on Christianity taking place in America.
“Today, the U.S. government is forcing people of faith to violate their beliefs on marriage and sexuality,” claims the video, featured on Cruz’s Youtube channel. “Across the country, Americans are being told to change their religious beliefs or lose their livelihood.”
The video features woe-inspiring interviews with popular antigay activists such Kelvin Cochran, the former Atlanta Fire Chief who was fired after publishing an antigay manifesto, and florist Barronelle Stutzman, who raised over $150,000 after she refused to sell flowers to a same-sex couple.

I don’t understand that any group who is anti-any person can claim to be Christian. As far as trampling on their beliefs on marriage – the only place is when people have the job of issuing marriage license and claim religious exemption. If you can’t bring yourself to do your job then you have already quit your job. So – move on. Then you can go to your church on Sunday and beat their chests, grind their teeth and yell “woe is me!” Just don’t interfere with the beliefs of others who hold differing views than you do!

I was aware of everyone in this video except the Sgt in the Air Force–Sgt Monk. Apparently he was the NCO in charge of training at a squadron at Lackland Air Force Base (the base where all Air Force trainees process through). One of Monk’s NCO’s (a SSG) used his position of authority to express his “religious beliefs/hatreds” to the trainees. When Sgt Monk told his commander, she advised that something needed to be done to the SSG. Monk wanted to treat it as a “training” exercise. Monk refused to obey his commander. The SSG was later given a counseling statement (minor infraction notice) and Monk received his reassignment that was pending. Monk was reassigned to a position commensurate with his paygrade and experience.
Monk claims he was forcibly reassigned based on his religious beliefs. He is also worried about whether he will receive his Meritorious Service Medal (that had been submitted for him).
He is lucky that he didn’t receive an Article 15 (non-judical punishment) or court martial for refusing to follow a lawful order of a superior officer.
The video also states that all of the people in the video are being sued. NOT TRUE. Sgt Monk CANNOT be sued by another person(s) in the military and there is no pending litigation against him.

And finally, Ted Cruz has no problem citing the U.S. Constitution when it suits his purposes. Yet, it is this very same Constitution which specifies that only “natural-born citizens” may be President. Cruz was born in Canada and thumbs his nose at the very nation for which he’s vying to be its supreme leader. Canada is well rid of him. If a revised U.S. immigration policy would help keep people like Cruz out of the U.S., I would vote for it.

Everyone in this video still has religious freedom. No one has taken that away. They haven’t been told that they can’t practice their religion. They haven’t been told that they are required – in any way – to change their views on homosexuality. All they have been told is that is no longer acceptable to discriminate and refuse service to someone based on those beliefs. It shouldn’t be that difficult to comprehend. Would it be acceptable if someone walked into a Gay-owned business and refused service because they were a Christian? or a Scientologist? I don’t. Its the same thing. There is no arguing that. Discrimination is discrimination and has no place in a businesss setting. But I am still of the mind that I wouldn’t want to give my money to support a business that would refuse service based on discrimination. I am sure a lot of business owners would refuse to serve Christians if it were acceptable. But it is not. Why do Christians think that it should be acceptable when that scenario is reversed? I would be thanking God for the business and for the money that kept food on my table and a roof over my head. And then if I really believed that there was something wrong with the customers who gave me that money I would still thank them, I would thank God for them and then I would pray for them. Mr Reisner is under great pressure from angry residents in the Fire Island Pines who want him to divest of his interest in the commercial property there.”
It is my understanding that Ian Reisner reached out to Ted Cruz regarding his concerns about Israel. If Ted Cruz were so adamantly homophobic, why would he meet with a bunch of gays? He opposes gay marriage because of religious reasons. It doesn’t mean he hates gays. If we do not meet him and engage him what are our chances of changing his mind?
There were protests and boycotts in an effort to bankrupt the hoteliers. Queer Nation flew a banner over Fire Island in its attempt to further the boycott.

“The protestors yelled “shame” at those patronizing the building and encouraged attendees to boycott other businesses owned by Reisner and Weiderpass. The two own 80% of the property on gay mecca Fire Island Pines.
Reisner and Weiderpass initially defended their meeting with Cruz following backlash from the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) community. After organizations began canceling events at spaces owned by Reisner and Weiderpass, Reisner publicly apologized for his “poor judgement” on Facebook.
I am shaken to my bones by the e-mails, texts, postings and phone calls of the past few days. I made a terrible mistake. The reason I ask is that there are many LGBT people where this is not a defining issue for them or their lives. There are people who put a premium on individual freedom, and not just their own. Freedom from government oppression, regulation and intervention. Who believe our rights come from God, not the government.
For a community so entrenched in government (sometimes rightfully so) it was a concept and way of life that is often not seen on the pages of Queerty or the gay community as a whole.

I believe having a strong LGBT Community has helped build and sustain certain freedoms. It has helped show the vast majority of the straight community that we’re just like everybody else and we need individual rights and freedoms.
Government Oppression. Who wants that. I think we’re in the opposite direction at this point. We need government intervention. We just got same-sex marriage. We need laws protecting our civil rights, our jobs, our housing, etc. You read Cruz’ stance on the issues. He opposes gay pride marches!! He wants to reverse same sex marriage laws. Stand up! The phrase “separation of church and state” was written in a LETTER by Thomas Jefferson to the Danbury, Ct Baptists.

There are a number of variables that could be involved in the negative comments you receive. There is no correlation between the comments here and group think in the LGBT Community.

As you had stated, we are a “Christian Nation,” but were this to change a hundred years from now, you may find your views challenged and your beliefs imposed upon. If you truly believe that your God is the only true God, can you not find talented teachers to convey the message, without establishing your beliefs into civil laws, under which everyone is coerced? The gradient is too wildly vast to say that your interpretation of the Bible is the proper version by which everybody shall be burdened. I do not want to live under yours or Ted Cruz’s version of my Bible, nor would I expect you to be burdened by my interpretation. One hundred years from now, the tide may change and we may find that we are burdened by a different God entirely, should the precedence be set now by foolish Texans and Tea Partiers. Jesus and John the Baptist didn’t run up the Herod and say, establish these laws of ours. Their words transform hearts. It will be ineffective to establish religion into civic laws, as years from now, these laws may well be overturned and set on a shelf, futility. If you believe in the Word, sing it from the rooftops, tell it to the mountain, establish a way to convey God’s message in a convincing manner through talent and faith, but coercion by civil laws is throwing resources down a rat-hole. If you have faith in your Father’s Word, that should be enough to grow 70 times 70 hearts and minds. Establishing your religious beliefs in civil law, without transforming hearts, is a temporary measure, oppressive, and sure to fail.

The baker and florist are self-inflicted wounds. They had ample opportunity to make amends (and still not have to make the wedding cake or arrangement) but they refused and insist on having it out in court. They want the courts to go against the law and case law and say it is ok for them to disobey the law. It won’t happen so they are just throwing their money away.
In any case, their losses were covered by crowdfunding. Only 3% of the florist’s revenue was from wedding arrangements. The fine was only $5000 iirc. So the bulk of her costs are from legal fees. She could have just settled it and stopped making any wedding arrangements. If they are so broke.. why do they continue to appeal? I guess it is hard to back down once you become like a rock star and receive the adoration of the people in these circles.

@captainburrito: That asshole florist settlement was much less than $5000. It was actually $2000 plus $1 in court and legal fees. The additional stipulation was to not discriminate again in the future.
