  MEXICAN-AMERICAN WAR

“Comedian” George Lopez Ticked Off GOProud. We Still Won’t Watch Him

On George Lopez’ new HBO comedy, It’s Not Me, It’s You,  the Mexican-American comedian went off on Mitt Romney, joking that the GOP presidential candidate is actually Latino but won’t admit it. “If you want our vote, puto,” Lopez said, “come out of the closet!”

That angered GOProud director Jimmy LaSalvia, who bristled at the use of puto, which is often used as an equivalent for “faggot.”  LaSalvia tells Laughspin, “It’s just another in a long line of examples of when liberals can use homophobic slurs and not face any consequences.” GOProud is asking for an apology from Lopez.

Get in line behind everyone who sat through his stand up, buddy.

You wanna know why liberals and gays can use gay slurs and get away with it? Because when they do everyone knows it’s a joke when the GOP does it is in a bill to take away someones rights.

ah, puto/puta means whore, slut….never heard it used as the “f” word…so once again made up controversy to try and inflame people…lol..I just read that and thought the people he’s trying to inflame actually aren’t the people(Repubs/conservatives) that actually support LGBT rights.

That is news to me that the “p” word now means the “f” word. Anyway, it’s context and I Lopez was referring to the face that his family at one time moved from the US to Mexico so they could practice polygamy (this was Romney’s grandfather). Also, he is also probably making a slight at Romney’s flip flopping over the dream act. Either way the bloggers here at Queerty seem to never know their politics and the readers here instantly jump to conclusions based on low information. As far as GOProud, who the hell cares.

Why is the moderation on this site so lousy?
‘Your comment is awaiting moderation. Our system might have erroneously auto-flagged your comment as spam; if so, we’ll fix it quickly. Or maybe you previously abused your commenting privileges, violated our Comments Policy, included a link to a known SPAM/harmful site, posted comments that detracted from the conversation, or have been repeatedly flagged by other users for being a jerk — in which case we won’t publish your comment.’
Seems there are no moderators ever around to actually get the comment moderated and added…
And why is it that stuff I posted 6 months ago is STILL awaiting moderation?
is the requirement for being a moderator on this site is that one must be total moron?

@William Turner: Ummm. No. Faggot, is blanket derogatory term against gays. Puto is not a blanket derogatory term for a gay male. Its the equivalent of genderizing the word slut. Spanish has no shortage of derogatory terms one could use for gays in general. If you use the word puto you’re talking more about the promiscuous nature of the male than anything else. But nice try.

Whore and slut are the dictionary meanings of that word. Puto can also mean a**hole, mofo, idiot, fu**er etc. This is especially true when a man says it to another man. A man trying to insult another man wouldn’t call him a whore or a slut.

I have heard a version of the word “puto” used to mean faggot. However, the word is modified as “putin” or “putito.” They(my aunts, uncles, and parents) typically stick with “maricon” though.

Also, Lopez always uses the puto to people he dislikes, so I doubt he meant it as fag.

      @FreddyMertz:

@William Turner: Well, FreddyMertz, I think that he has more credentials than you on the subject of the Spanish language.
I recognize the start as being, ‘Yes, I speak the language’ (Si, hablo el idioma.)
Then I recognize another bit i can puzzle out… [peyorativo para referirse a los homosexuales (es el caso especialmente de México y Argentina)] which is saying that “it is a pejorative term for a homosexual (especially in Mexico and Argentina)”

i think that ended with saying that you should go back to school and get an education that includes learning Spanish.
Or maybe that you had a very poor education because it did not include learning Spanish. I can’t quite tell.

(Back in third grade I read John Ciardi’s translation of Dante’s Inferno that contained both the English translation and the Latin original — even going so far as to get a Latin/English dictionary to ‘test’ the translation. So I can sort of sometimes understand a bit of the written Spanish — and sometimes a little is worse than none at all.
As to why some is worse than none, it is because common root words pop up in quite a few European languages, leading a person to erroneously believe they actually fully understand based merely upon the words that appear familiar.)

I decided to reapply my prior comment (which would be #9 if you can’t yet see it as i suspect you can’t) that has yet to be ‘moderated':
I think Lopez just wrote/presented his joke badly.
Mitt is a w.ho.r.e., at least in the political sense.
But certainly not in the classic way.
He went before the NAACP to show off his ‘charms’ to the racists in his party because they are the ones he needs votes from, as the NAACP certainly wasn’t going to offer any.
Trying to confuse the whole issue with adding into the joke that Mitt is secretly Latino…
Well, suddenly we have ‘Latino’ being equated to ‘homosexual’ within the joke’s context.
Well it is ‘cute’ in a way, but it really does lead to a degree of confusion.
Stuffing so many implications into the joke rather breaks down the humor as one stops reacting at the aesthetic level and starts looking at it from the rational level.

      Overall… MEH.
Its some comedian who said a joke that nobody will remember in 3 months time.
I’m more concerned with Jimmy Walker’s recent statements.

In Mexico, “puta” means “whore,” but also “slut.” Meanwhile, “puto” is used as “faggot” 95% of the times. I don’t think anyone would think about a hustler when they hear that word. Since most Latinos in the US are Mexican descent, the word among the Hispanic community is quite known, regardless of whether the use it in their country of origin or not. Cheers, a Mexican.
