Floridian gays just got a new ally.
As right wing activists gear up to fight gay marriage in Florida, legendary civil rights activist Julian Bond has pledged his power and prestige to opposing anti-gay discrimination. From a press release:
Bond, an icon in the civil rights movement for nearly 50 years and longtime national Chairman of the NAACP, has stepped into a leadership role with the Fairness for All Families Campaign the statewide coalition effort to defeat the deceptively named “Florida Marriage Protection” Amendment.
Bond will serve on the Honorary Board of the campaign to defeat the constitutional amendment, slated for the 2008 ballot, that could strip away employee benefits while barring the passage of measures to help Florida families.
Former Attorney General Janet Reno, Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz and Reverend Nancy Wilson of the Metropolitan Community Church are also on the board.

Three cheers for Julian Bond. The black community, through many of its leaders, is coming over to support our gay and lesbian citizens. Why – because the people who are the victims of America’s greatest single crime- slavery and segregation, understand what hate and greed mean. And remember, all of the tragedy that was inflicted upon black people in this country was done “in the name of God”, by so called “Good Christians”. Their only real God during slavery was named Greed, for slavery was an economic crime. But they corrupted their own moral values so badly that they need someone new to hate, to satisfy their own feelings of insecurity. There was always the Jews, including those who met their end thanks to Hitler, who was born a Catholic, and went to Seminary school. So as hatred of Jews has become unfashionable, and Gay people are tired of being treated as untouchables in our society, they become the new targets of these sick0 religious people. All in the name of their God of hate, ignorance, and bigotry. Maybe there is a Satan – we sure have lots of hypocrits who call themselves christian still worshiping him.
