There’s been quite a bit of chatter about that leather harness Adam Rippon wore to the Academy Awards on Sunday.
In a tweet posted yesterday, Adam said he “felt cool AF” and like a “sexy MF” in his leather harness. Not only that, but he doesn’t “give a sh*t” what his haters have to say about it:

Let us consider the harness. A pitiless tool meant to join machine with flesh. To bind the load onto a lowly beast of burden, to restrain and control a mount. Itself cut out of the hide of a used and spent slave animal. Now let us ponder the implication of placing such restraints onto a fetching youth for decoration.
Do we admire and praise this? Really? Treating a human being like livestock? Teaching him that he is a thing to be yoked, objectified and used for carnal pleasure? Does this advance our culture? Improve self-esteem? Does it even, as the scene insists, make a better man of him?

It’s great that he wore it, and felt good doing so. I’ve known people who wore them underneath business suits, etc., but AR’s fashion choice was pretty ballsy, and considering how many designers have incorporated fetish-y and leather-inspired gear into their designs over the years, he’s not that outside the mainstream.
BTW, wasn’t a BDSM-anchored book about a straight couple, *50 Shades of Grey* a publishing and film sensation just a few years ago? And isn’t the newest movie in the series, again featuring a straight couple engaging in BDSM, in theaters now?

One of the reasons those books became a sensation was because it was seen as something “dangerous” and “subversive”. Yet, many people view that as everyday life for queers. And the BDSM presented in the books and films is pretty tame stuff, mostly a controlling, mopey rich boy fetish than genuine BDSM.
I had no problem with the outfit. I think Adam is clever and cute. He’s that perfect pretty, slutty fem-boy fantasy. But I can see why some are already tired of him and I could see myself getting bored with his outlandish, pouty-mouth, campy routine soon. Unless there’s a tape leaking in the near future.
