Bloc Party’s Kele Okereke, one of our favorite gay indie rockers, has a solo effort! It’s called “Tenderoni,” and my god does it scream gay dance club anthem. I swear to you. This video is going to be playing on the video screens above the urinals — when it’s not being amped up to some trip-hop remix that gets all the boys in a tiz.

Hope he gains some steam. How novel would it be to have an actual gay modern gay icon?

I wish the rating options on each article included “meh” because that is exactly how I’d rate this.

I like it. Wanted to buy this track in support of a gay artist (+ one of color, which is just a bonus for myself), but couldn’t find it on itunes or amazon.

Yeah…I couldn’t help myself.
I’m in my underwear and I’m pretty sure the mailman just caught me gyrating through my kitchen.
I love it! I’m so exhausted by a lot of the synthetic, monotonous music that’s produced. It all sounds the same. It’s as though it has no soul or personality. (Think Miley Cyrus’ new single); it’s like reading a Danielle Steel novel. Once you’ve heard one, you’ve heard them all. (Think mariah carey album).
But then, every once in a while I find something like this and I’ll listen to it for days. There’s a new sound in that song, and his voice is fantastic.

he also may be one of the guest vocalists on the new hercules and love affair album
I used to be a huge fan 5-6 years ago with silent alarm. i don’t know if it’s just my getting older/developing different tastes, but i don’t really like anything he’s put out with his band. this is great though

Which is better, this or Chromeo’s “Tenderoni”?

(I think they’re both alright–not a big fan of eletronic music in general.)

@Jorge: Actually Kele is kind of already an icon (though not for being gay, but for being a good musician) via Bloc Party. Their album “Silent Alarm” was rated by a ton of critics as one of the best albums of the past decade.
I like the fact that he’s experimenting with his solo work, but I doubt a ton of us Bloc Party fans are going to get behind this song.
Ricky
This is reminiscent of Perfect “Exceeder” remix done by Princess Superstar.
That was 2007.
Kele’s pales in comparison.

I don’t know, the instrumentation is good but the vocals are not.

@Caine: I really loved Bloc Party in high school unless I’m lying about the passage of time one way or another, but their subsequent albums I thought were a little meh. I felt obliged to keep following them in hopes they got better since Kele quasi-came out and they were an indie band that had multiple actual minorities though.
That said, I swear this sounds a lot like a song called Wearing my Rolex. And I just noticed Ricky’s link in comment 12 has a pretty similar sound too so maybe it’s not that big of a deal and it does eventually go off in a different direction.
