It’s felt as if Colton Haynes has long been gently, but intentionally teasing us with all the coy photos posted to his very entertaining Instagram account and with that controversial message last January in response to a note posted on Tumblr, referencing provocative photos taken at the start of his career, that read: “When I found out Colton Haynes had a secret gay past, I got so excited even though i know it makes absolutely no difference in my life.” The 27-year-old actor, who has appeared in Arrow, The Grinder and Teen Wolf, cryptically replied, “Was it a secret? Let’s all enjoy life & have no regrets.” Many people, OK, just about everyone, took that to mean that Haynes was going the Jim Parsons-route and acknowledging that he’s gay without making a big public to-do about it. Now, however, he’s setting the record straight, so to speak, with a very revealing interview with EW, in which he confirms that he is not the least bit heterosexual and that he’s concerned about his mental health, as he suffers from severe anxiety and an ulcer.
Addressing the hubbub over Haynes’ sexual orientation earlier this year, EW writes:
“It was a complete shock. I wasn’t ready to be back in the headlines,” Haynes, who is in fact gay but has never publicly addressed his sexuality (and, like many others on his path, took advice early in his career to subdue it). “I should have made a comment or a statement, but I just wasn’t ready. I didn’t feel like I owed anyone anything. I think in due time, everyone has to make those decisions when they’re ready, and I wasn’t yet. But I felt like I was letting people down by not coming forward with the rest of what I should have said.”

“People want you to be that GQ image that you put out, but people don’t realize what it’s like to act 24 hours a day. I’d go home and I was still acting,” he added to EW. “People who are so judgmental about those who are gay or different don’t realize that acting 24 hours a day is the most exhausting thing in the world.”
The magazine also notes that Haynes took a brief break from his career due to concerns over his health:
“I asked to step away because I cared more about my mental and physical health than my career at the time,” the actor tells EW, opening up about his personal and professional life for the first time in quite some time. “I’ve had terminal anxiety my entire life. Physically ill, fainting. I’m 27 years old, and I have an ulcer. I had to step back.” Clinical anxiety and public pressure are a potent mix, but their effects may be worse for someone like Haynes – a gentle spirit in a threatening (or so he’s been told by many a casting director) build, someone who lost control of his own personal narrative somewhere along the way between Kansas and California.
Hang in there, sir. Things can only get better.
Xzamilio
Cool, he’s out. Next
redcarpet30
I feel for him with the anxiety. It’s miserable. And the media hasn’t exactly been gentle.
Hussain-TheCanadian
Colton honey…..we all knew it, but im glad you don’t have to hide anymore – We knew such a handsome and coy, intelligent man can only be gay (wink)!
Now I hope Captain Obvious is right about Henry Cavil is next….COME ON Henry come out of the closet already!!!
michaelmt1009
Good for you making your health your top priority. As a long time person with anxiety issues I understand how devastating it can be. Get yourself well you have a long great career ahead of you. Best wishes always.
etseq
Why so coy Queerty? “Not heterosexual”? The actual article says GAY – not bi, fluid, pansexual, queer, etc. GAY!
MadMikenCT
This guy is so talented and from what I can tell has a sense of humor crazy as f*ck. I hope that this”news” eases the anxiety, the ulcer, and most of all the unnecessary attention to his personal life. Bravo, sir. Onward.
Billy Budd
I dont know anything about him, but i am beginning to like him. I hope his anxiety will go away forever.
Ksb1978
Have no idea who this guy is. I’ve only seen his name plastered here on Queerty, but he has gorgeous eyes.
MacAdvisor
I do want to point out that most ulcers are caused by a bacteria (Helicobacter pylori) and the anxiety theory of causation is now somewhat in dispute. If he does have an ulcer, he really should see his doctor and some antibiotics.
SonOfKings
I have mixed feeling about whether celebrities should feel obligated to be “out.” On the one hand, they don’t owe anybody anything in regard to putting their exuality out there. On the other hand, I think about how nice it would have been, when I was 12 years old, if there had been more gay, male role models in popular culture to look up to and identify with.
Doug
I’m sick of seeing this guy every time I log in to Queerty.
ProfessorMoriarty
Aw, poor little lamb. Hopefully now that he’s out, the pressure will be off and his health will get better.
Welcome to the tribe, Colton! Here is your toaster.
Blackceo
Congrats to Colton for “officially” coming out but I’m still more intrigued about his faded eyebrows than his sexuality.
Rudi2911
Am I the only one imagining Colton and Charlie Carver together on the set of Teen Wolf?
midknightryder13
I was sorry to hear that it was his health problems that caused him to leave “Arrow”, though I’m glad to see things are getting better for him. Keep going, Colton.
“Arrow” was actually more fun when HE was on it — because Roy was even more headstrong than Oliver, which is saying a lot!
Anyway, I vote for him coming back to “Arrow”, although I cannot figure out HOW they could do that — but, hey, why should Wentworth Miller have all the fun?
Brian
Gay is a choice. It’s a choice to identify as gay.
DCguy
Let’s read the real story here. He was talking about coming out and Arrow fired him. But they are using the contract and remaining salary to keep him quiet about that aspect of it.
Chico
@DCguy: that may be true but that idea is muddied up a bit by the fact that out and proud John Barrowman is still on the show…
onlymyopinion
Well done on coming out officially. You didn’t owe it to anyone but yourself, but still well done. You can now start the journey of recovery, use your platform to help people so they can live the most authentic version of themselves
DCguy
@Chico:
Hmmmm, good point, but doesn’t it seem that, if it was a “Supportive” environment, why leave voluntarily?
Black Pegasus
His chances to play a leading man in any film has just dropped 200 percent. I hope the gossiping bloggers and the gay mafia is happy now.
Jonathan26
He is just beautiful & I wish him a very happy life!
DCguy
@Black Pegasus:
I love how you blame the victims. So it isn’t Hollywood bigotry and homophobia that should be attacked, nope, not at all, it’s those HORRIBLE minorities for asking to be treated as equals.
And if you will NOTICE Haynes himself said that hiding and being in the closet was damaging his health. I suppose that is also the “Gay Mafia’s” fault?
Let me guess, you tell rape victims that they shouldn’t have enticed their rapist by wearing a skirt right?
Sluggo2007
@Brian: Being gay is only a choice for you because you don’t know what the fuck you are.
youarekiddingme
@Sluggo2007: But we DO know what @Brian: is…he’s living placenta. His poor mom. The baby didn’t make it. The placenta lives on…
hkgjefe1
Never seen his work, but am a fan of him as a personality. Not so much his looks (altho no complaints there), but more his groundedness. I enjoy watching him on Instagram. He’s just a normal guy – well, as normal as one can be in the pubic eye. And hearing of his struggles with anxiety makes him even more ‘normal’ to me. Cool guy.
mauikamaaina
I would love to help him get rid of his anxiety, so he can experience a complete recovery!
muscl954
If a movie is ever made about Montgomery Clift, Colton Haynes should be cast in the part. Looks, personal angst, (up until recently)closeted homosexuality – he has it all. And I mean this sincerely.
loren_1955
Colton’s a good man. Hopefully being honest and true to himself will resolve the health issues. Too many of us know the dangers of living double lives. Blessing to him and all who struggle with coming out.
mc4bbs
Who is this??? Why should I care?
mz.sam
More love and peace to beautiful Colton. Acknowledging his truth is the power that overcomes all the venomous haters and their posted comments. Anxiety attack disorder is a common but unspoken illness portrayed in the must see beautiful gay movie, ‘Steel’.
onthemark
It’s ironic that he’s apparently named after one of the tougher and grittier cities in Southern California. If only his parents had named him Rialto or Moreno (Valley), he’d be a real bad-ass. Kidding.
mujerado
@Xzamilio: Got it, you don’t care. Next.
Hu7w
He hasn’t said explicitly that he is “gay”. Also, he has had many girlfriends. Therefore, he is bi.
Daniel-Reader
Good that he can be himself.
Pete
His looks are arresting. He a Dorian Gray: he just gets more handsome. I hope he finds meatier parts. Perhaps he should consider cutting his teeth in live theater, like NPH.
I hope he got some kind of education along the way.
David Aventura
Who is this guy, and why do gay men of a certain age know or care???
capeguyz
Congratulations on coming out…anytime you want a walk on the…ah…non-wild side of being gay, you’re welcome to come hang out with me!
Michael
@capeguyz: that’s a very nice thing to say! I wouldn’t mind hanging with you.
batesmotel
He’s a total babe. I’ve never heard of him before this so obviously the coming out gay thing can help someone’s career, although I still don’t know what he does. Modeling, acting. Other than him being a hottie, don’t know what else he has going for him that would be interesting.
Doughosier
I don’t think actors should come out. Matt Damon’s right- the less we know about an actor, the easier to believe in a role. However, Coltons probably too beautiful to be a leading man in anything other than a soap opera so maybe the publicity will help. It’s a tough business, he might be happier in the long run doing something else.
Chris
He did what he felt was best for him to become healthy. We should all pay such attention to what our own bodies and minds tell us. ….. Congrats, young sir. May you have a long and healthy life.
dwes09
@Brian: Once again (though you are really too thick for it to sink in), gay is one of several words denoting male homosexuality. Male homosexual orientation is not a choice, but a position on a (still hypothetical) continuum between exclusively heterosexual and exclusively homosexual. Just does because you dislike that part of you that is attracted to men, but indulge it nonetheless; and dislike the generally shared culture of homosexual men who are open about their sexual orientation, the fact that homosexual orientation is not a choice does not change!
Your tortured imagination is not reality. Your inability to accept others does not change or diminish those others. What do you identify as? A bro that occasionally needs another bro to “help him out” because women spurn him? The classic 1950’s “covert homosexual”? One of those odd gay men who believe the only legitimate sexual outlet is frottage? A log-cabinosexual?
dwes09
@DCguy: “Let’s read the real story here.”
If you have a reputable link to that ‘real story’, i am sure people might be interested in reading it. Otherwise it is simply another case of someone mistaking their bitter imagination for reality.

“I didn’t feel like I owed anyone anything.” You didn’t, most people are selfish and expect it, but it is irrelevant.
wizbang_fl
Starting in TV and being on multiple series that had relatively short runs or where his character works out of the script in a season certainly would play with your mind. Particularly if you were told you couldn’t be who you were. I am always glad when actors who are gay gain the courage to come out publically. Some people may not think much of it, but it still is a risk for them when their career is based on a public fan-base that can be very fickle about the silliest things.
Michael1500
I do so empathize with the man. I’m not a movie star, but I was a (married with children) attorney/judge in a very conservative part of Texas. I know the “married, with children” part is my own doing, but I grew up in the closet, denying my sexuality due to family/peer pressure. The accompanying stress and mental pressure is tremendous. I do hope Colton can find someone to comfort him and give him strength, if he hasn’t already.
dre23222
He is absolutely gorgeous. Always loved him. Type of guy I love to kiss and talk to!
dre23222
@Michael1500: glad you were able to overcome all that pressure in the life.
Dixie Rect
Shocking! Who Knew?
Said no one.
lykeitiz
Oh Colton, you’re so beautiful!
Oh Colton, you’re so witty!
Oh Colton, you’re so talented!
There. Now maybe my comments will be posted.
Captain Obvious
Being Zack Quinto’s boy toy didn’t count as coming out? They weren’t exactly hiding their relationship. Quinto seems to like being a sugar daddy to closeted Hollywood pretty boys.
Billy Budd
I also suffered a lot with social anxiety and phobia issues UNTIL I decided to say I DONT CARE to the world and totally accept myself as a gay man. You guys can’t believe or imagine how repressed and conflicted I was, for SO many years. It was horrible. But now I am on the right track, totally open to love and to the real world. I don’t tell everyone I am gay, but everyone who asks gets their answer. The real one. And I keep my little rainbow flag above my desk at the office. Today I love being who I am, a happy gay man who loves other men and is proud of what he has achieved and of who he is. I am a scientist, a professor and a proud gay guy. I don’t wanna have children, but I compensate this by contributing to society with my research (I advance knowledge in my field) and I also feel that my students are my kids, in a sense. I am very happy withh my life today and I think I have a noble profession. I think that being gay is beautiful. I hope the world will totally change in the years to come and homosexuality will become fashionable again. I hope to see this happening in my life time.
jjose712
@Rudi2911: I think they weren’t on the set of Teen Wolf at the same time, Colton was there in the first two seasons and Charlie played his role in the third season
jjose712
@Doughosier: Funny that Matt Damon never hide he is heterosexual, and go everywhere with his wife.
I don’t think Matt is homophobic at all, but he is really clueless because his theory only seems to aply to gay men
redzebra1
@Hussain-TheCanadian:
“We all knew” No we did not. Only he and some people he told ‘knew’
jockboy1986
According to friends we have in common, Colton is still a virgin, at least when it comes to men. I wonder when he told his brother Joshua, who is openly gay.

@mc4bbs: Maybe because he is another human being and your just a bitch

Sorry and here I thought there was freedom of speech, I should of said ( a female Dog )
