I generally like the ability to use crayons with my children’s books, but that doesn’t mean I don’t enjoy My Uncle’s Wedding, a 34-page read — released this week for kids aged 4-8 — that follows wee Andy as he attends the nuptials of Uncle Mike and Steve. I’ll forgive author Eric Ross making use of the gay uncle stereotype (everyone has gay uncles, apparently, but not gay moms and dads), but only because Mike and Steve look so happy. It’s $10.99, if you’re interested.
UPDATE: The Leffews perform a reading!
Hank
Perhaps he made a gay uncle book because:
a) It’s true that there are a lot of gay uncles/aunts in the world. I am a gay uncle (who hopes to one day be a father, too!)
and, more importantly,
b) Doesn’t it seem logical that a child who has gay parents wouldn’t need a book to tell him about same-sex relationships..? I haven’t read the book so I don’t know if they did this already, but I suppose they could include a note about adoption or surrogacy. Remember: it is a book for kids between 4 and 8. Maybe teaching them the basics first IS the correct approach.

Statistically, it’s more likely that a child, or one of his immediate friends, has a gay uncle or two vs. their having two Daddies or Mommies.
We don’t call or relatives the “breeders” for nothing….

I think it is not appropriate to brainwash the children at an early age… sure it is important to tell them that discrimination against any person is wrong, but the colouring book is too invasive
Jeffree
@Yuriy: How is this “brainwashing” or invasive? It’s a coloring book, not a textbook or required reading at kindergarten!
Here’s a clue: children don’t buy their own coloring books; so if I want to buy something like this for my neices or nephews, or if one of my siblings wants to get it for them, it’s good to have an option like this !
greenmanTN
Brainwashing? You mean like raising them in an organization that tells them an invisible being is watching them all the time and will send them to an ETERNITY of fiery torture if they question any of it?
No, I’m pretty sure this is just… a coloring book.
Ernest
There should be more information available for kids to read to give them an understanding if they want to know more. There should be books for children who have gay uncles/aunts, brothers/sisters, Fathers/Mothers, etc. Nobody has any discriminationas with anyone UNTIL their peers pretty much push them towards discrimination, because their peers were taught that way. I am sick of Religion for all I care RELIGION CAN go back to where it came from. The bible, any so called holy scriptures, are only good for wiping your ass. Enough with standing behind something that makes it alright. If that’s your closure with death I pity you fools.
Jake
Y’all are wrong. It’s not even a coloring book. It’s just a book.
Jeffree
@Jake: I made that mistake reading the original post too quickly. Oops.
And still I think this is a good idea for a book.
And children *do* turn many regular books into coloring books, I have to add! I crayoned a couple walls too !

Have your read Uncle Bobby’s Wedding, by Sarah S. Brannen? It covers the same topic beautifully. Published by Putnam about three years ago. A favorite gift for my two daddy friends.
