Jake Gyllenhaal: Gay Rumors Were A “Huge Compliment” After “Brokeback Mountain”

033-copyIn a truly scrumtrulescent appearance on Inside the Actor’s Studio, Jake Gyllenhaal discusses meeting the late Heath Ledger and working with him on the seminal gay cowboy drama, Brokeback Mountain.

“Heath and I knew each other for years before that because we had both auditioned for Moulin Rouge together,” Gyllenhaal tells host James Lipton. “And I remember thinking, ‘I like this guy. He’s just like, super lovable.”

When the gay rumors started rolling in like tumbleweed across the plain, Gyllenhaal says he took it as a “huge compliment.” Losing Heath, however, was like “losing a family member” the 32-year-old actor said and he still misses Ledger “to this day.”

Jake Gyllenhaal’s episode of Inside the Actor’s Studio airs Thursday September 19 on Bravo.

There should be a Bare-Back Russia movie, where a prominent Russian down low President is in chaos for he is in the closet, hiding his secret love affairs with Hot Russian soldiers and must convince the Russian people that he is anti-gay. But, someone not in his inner circle has learned his double life and he must do everything to stop the secret from being reviled.

    Actually it’s not a compliment, it’s hate speech…..

  • Charlie in Charge

@balehead: It’s a compliment to be thought of as gay.

  • Bozen

@balehead: take a chill pill yo. There’s definitely a difference between voiced opinions and “hate speech”

  • Deepdow

Well he grew up in a very progressive household. It’s a welcome sign that major celebrities can say such things. Donnie Darko is one of my all time favorite films. BTW I can’t believe James Lipton is 86. He looks great.

  • ChiChi Man

I’m guessing he means it’s a huge compliment, as an actor, to play a role so authentically that the audience assumes some part of the performance is real.

  • Homophile

But you are gay, Jake. Come out already, America will still love you.

  • J.c.

@ChiChi Man: yes I totally agree. Good point!

  • J.c.

@Homophile: Of course NO real straight man could EVER be honored to play a gay man because he liked the story or felt that it was a good role.He has got to be a closet case (according to the old queens). Tell that to Shawn Penn.

Somehow I don’t think it’s much of a stretch for Jake to play gay. He screams bisexual

I heard Lipton was dating Cher and planning on being at her Real Farewell Tour
next month at Ceasars Palace when she turns 80. It’ll be awesome. The two of them make a lovely couple.

    How huge?

  • redspyder

LOL – hilarious that he thinks that Brokeback Mountain is the cause of those gay rumors… did he forget about all his ‘cuddling’ with Austin Nichols at Lakers games? Dating ‘Beard of the Century’ Taylor Swift? All the comments that Matthew McConaughey & Lance Armstrong made about their little cycling buddy when they were a bit ‘impaired’ during an after party? Not to mention all the “car park” gossip.

Jake’s been tagged as ‘gay’ for forever…

  • hephaestion

Apprently being a highly evolved straight guy makes you a sure-fire closet case to some ay men. I find that sad. I think Jake is very cool and very highly-evolved.

  • martinbakman

@Deepdow: DDarko is on my list too. I watched the directors cut and thought it was impressive. JG has done several movies that I like quite a bit.

  • misterhollywood

There are so many rumors flying around about this guy it is not even funny. We did a very long article on him that explores the question of his sexual orientation (click on my profile to get transported to my website).

I have to say I really like this actor. He did not have to do Brokeback Mountain back in 2005. You know?

GAK… Can you imagine Putin and Trump….
