Like those who stopped watching halfway through Freak Show, Jessica Lange is done with American Horror Story.
Lange has officially confirmed that she will not appear in the next or any subsequent seasons.
She told an AHS panel at PaleyFest in Los Angeles:
“Yes, I’m done. We’ve had a great run here. I absolutely love doing these four characters, and in all madness, I love the writers and Ryan and the insanity of shooting it.”
But as is to be expected, there are still plenty of interesting tidbits about season 5 that will get us to tune in.
How about we take this to the next level?
Our newsletter is like a refreshing cocktail (or mocktail) of LGBTQ+ entertainment and pop culture, served up with a side of eye-candy.
Matt Bomer, who made a guest appearance in one episode of Freak Show, will have a meatier role in Hotel. He said of co-star Lady Gaga, “I can’t confirm nor deny that there will be a romantic relationship.”
Also joining the cast is Cheyenne Jackson of Glee, so maybe that whole pseudo-musical thing will carry over from Freakshow. Brush up on your Bowie.
In honor of the truly irreplaceable Jessica Lange, here’s a video of her bitchiest lines from seasons 1 & 2. We hope someone out there has the time to add in 3 & 4:

What?!!! Queen Jessica was the only thing that kept me watching through the end of AHS Freakshow. I will watch the first episode of the next installment but doubt Matt Bomer and Lady Gaga will be able to keep me watching unless Ryan’s writing and plot line is significantly better than Freakshow.

I haven’t finished a season of AHS since Season 1. Not sure why. At some point, the episodes start piling up on the DVR, and I eventually delete them to record other things.

He doesn’t know how to end a story. Murphy is horrible about starting a great story with great ideas and then moving on to something else without finishing. You’d think with an anthology it would give him a fresh start each season, but he still manages to peter out about 3/4 of the way through a season.

Ugh, this show feels like it’s gonna get campy, now. And not the good kind of campy. Like High School Music without the irony. Oh, well… I look forward to watching all of the exciting trailers, the first three episodes, and then forgetting it’s on, and only going back to FX for new eps of Archer because Hulu for some goddamn reason won’t release the episodes unless you have one of the 5 cable providers I don’t have… thanks, Time Warner. Thank Obama.
Anyway, it’s probably gonna suck.
Ummmm Yeah
She’s running from the crappy writing of the last two seasons.

Snarky Queerty: “Like those who stopped watching halfway through Freak Show, Jessica Lange is done with American Horror Story.”
Well, since Freak Show was the 2nd highest rated of the 4 seasons, not that many people stopped watching.
But, to each their own. The 3rd season (Coven) was its highest rated, and I thought it was a big mess. Visually stunning, but horrible writing.

wasn’t this news last year at least..that she was done after this?

@redcarpet30: OMG! I’ve been saying the same thing and having people call me crazy. But it’s true. The idea and initial setup of the season premiere is SOOO good, but as the season progresses too many side stories and the main plot is agonizingly slow. Then it just fizzles.

Interesting how my comment from yesterday is all of a sudden, gone.

Ryan Murphy is obsessed with the aging, narcissistic, glamorpuss, hasbeen/neverbeen trope and I can imagine that this would lose it’s charm for Jessica Lange after a while. I highly doubt she views herself that way, she’s got so much to be proud of in her career, she doesn’t need to always be playing different variations of the same depressed glamorpuss diva.
Part of the reason for why the second season was so good was probably because that was only a small part of Sister Jude’s character so Lange got to explore different facets of being an “older” woman in this world in her acting.

Jessica is smart and knows when to move on…..I moved on halfway thru last season of Freakshow—it was really bad.
OhHellNo
Lange said that awhile ago. A television news story reported yesterday that she will be in the new season of AHS, but only in the last episodes – as Gaga’s character in later years. You guys need to get together on this stuff.

I’m going to miss Jessica, but as far as cast members go, I mostly watch the show for Evan Peters mostly in hopes he does a nude scene. It doesn’t hurt that he has some acting chops either, but the entire cast is pretty good. Its just about the only thing Murphy does consistently well.
Otherwise, Murphy’s shows are way to erratic and structurally unsound to take seriously. The episodes usually start off very strong but fall apart and abandon what made them good. I guess he just gets bored of ideas too quickly instead of trying to make them more interesting.
