The White House unveiled Melania Trump‘s official portrait this week.
The photograph was taken by Regine Mahaux in the West Sitting Hall of the White House private residence, which some people have criticized because, well, Melania doesn’t actually live in the White House. Others have questioned if she really needed to flash her 25-caret, diamond-incrusted engagement ring in the picture, which pretty much dominates the entire bottom left corner of the frame.

Upon the photo’s release, Melania issued a statement saying, “I am honored to serve in the role of First Lady, and look forward to working on behalf of the American people over the coming years.” We’re not sure the American people feel the same way, but whatever.

Cutting energy assistance for low-income people bothers me more than how Trump’s wife’s photo looks. Heartless Republicans could care less if poor people froze to death. We have to fight the GOP. They’re cutting meals-on-wheels, too, foolish if the cost analysis extrapolates to show how many stay out of care facilities because of these meal programs. Wads. Vote them out in 2018 & 2020. You missed one critical point. Under the Trump/Ryan proposed “health care” program, the cuts to Medicaid would mean there really wouldn’t be any long term care facilities. Since Medicare does not cover long term care, the only funding would come from Medicaid. So, in effect, Trump/Ryan are saying to the not-wealthy seniors, tough luck if you get any dementia, you’re out on the streets. That’s apparently the “Christian” approach of Trump/Ryan.

Billionaires don’t stop damaging the working class just because a scandal-ridden presidency is mucking up the works. Vote these white, wealthy, males out of office. Unions are next.

This type of thing is exactly why those repulsive people are infesting the White House at the moment. I don’t really see the point in doctoring photographs in this way. We know she is a deeply troubled and unpleasant person – she married trump. We should be focusing on highlighting and attacking what they are doing rather than personalities. The entire world knows that trump is a liar and thoroughly reprehensible low life – yet more than 60 million voted for him. Those people knew what you we all know, and it made no difference. Attacking her in this way will only encourage some – even some on here – to ‘feel sorry’ for her. When you feel sorry for someone you are identifying with them. So this kind of campaign backfires most of the time. She is a legitimate political target – and its on that level we will make progress in bringing the trumpocracy to an end.

Normally I would agree with everything you write 1Equality – but on this occasion we probably diverge slightly. I say ‘political target’ because the role of ‘First Lady’ is a formal one, even if the scope is largely down the occupant – although it is complicated by the fact that I don’t recognise her husband as President and her as First Lady anyway. Nevertheless, much like I take the view that ALL people who serve in this ‘government’ are subject to collective responsibility for all of its actions, so also for her. Taking lessons from my own family’s European history, I don’t accept there is political neutrality in a situation like this one – for me, if you are not publicly against this politically illegitimate regime then you are responsible for propping it up. No one forced her to applaud the hate speeches. If she is really unhappy in her marriage she can get divorced. I don’t buy this notion that she is a helpless soul, trapped.

Interesting that this IS nothing more than a glamour shot, rather than a portrait. All on the surface with the superficiality made more glaring by the amount of makeup and photomanipulation. It says “trophy wife” more than anything about her as a person.

Look at the past first lady official photographs and you’ll see that those are all about the same as this one. From Michelle Obama, to Laura Bush, to Hillary Clinton, to many others, it has always been a glamorous photo.
