During his recent trip to California to see the damage wrought by wildfires that are still blazing across the state, Donald Trump suggested the fires could have been prevented if only people had done more “raking and cleaning” of the state’s 1.6 million acres of forests.

“I was with the President of Finland and he said we have–much different–we are a forest nation. He called it a forest nation,” Trump said. “And they spend a lot of time on raking and cleaning and doing things, and they don’t have any problem. And when it is, it’s a very small problem. So I know everybody’s looking at that to that end.”

In response to Trump’s remarks, the Finland’s president said that he and #45 did discuss the California wildfires during a recent meeting, but that he never mentioned anything about “raking and cleaning and doing things”, and instead simply told Trump “we take care of our forests.”

Oh really? A sitting President mentions that the necessary forest management (cleaning out dead brush and limbs, removing dead trees (an estimated 198 million of them in CA now), is a 30 year-old problem that has done nothing but get worse, causes worse and worse fires, you all think it’s ‘funny’ to say he was talking about “raking leaves”. He said nothing about raking leaves. He spoke of the misguided and ignorant forest management practices of the last 30 years brought on by the environmentalists. In their efforts to save Tweetie Bird 30 years ago, they’ve legislated forest management and logging out of California, and now thousands and thousands of acres burn. I don’t think they saved Tweetie Bird, me thinks they mismanaged the forests so very badly, they ended up killing more animals and birds, never mind the property damage and human loss, than they ever saved. Another failed leftist policy. But you people on here want use this terrible situation as just another way to bash President Trump. Your transparency is astounding. Your lack of ability to see the issue for what it really is, is astounding.

So Mr.IKnowALot, did you know that most of the fires that happened in California this last month were on federal land? Federal policies run those lands and a Conservative Republican has been on the wheel for the last 2 years.
The left doesn’t see this as a way to bash Trump. Trump just makes everything about a way to bash Trump, by misquoting a head of state and imagining in his orange mind-of-minds that managing the forestry of Finland and California are anything alike.

Trump never mentioned “leaves.” The multitude of anti-Trump media did. Actually, Trump has a valid point. His use of the word “raking” refers to clearing the forest floors of dead underbrush and fallen trees before they turn into kindling and matches for a fire.
